So this thread is just going to be about horror flicks and whatever's on my dirty little mind at the time. Sometimes I'll be giving out star ratings, sometimes not.
Anyway, right now I'm in the midst of absorbing the catalogue of Mario Bava. It took a while, but I finally found a movie of his that I like really well - Kill, Baby, Kill, a movie that is seen by many scholars as the inspiration of the "little girl ghost" movies later done to death in countless J-horror epics. Good characters, good script, and a very creepy score.
I'd been disappointed by his other films, btw. Black Sunday was a little stale, and The Girl Who Knew Too Much was extremely dull, and took me (I kid you not) ELEVEN TRIES to sit through the entire thing without falling asleep. Until Kill, Baby, Kill, Black Sabbath, a three-story anthology film, was actually my favorite of the bunch.
So that's what I got for now. If anybody wants to post their own horror thoughts/reviews, respond to what I say, or just share general horror-related merryment, post in here.

Have you seen Re-Animator? Best zombie movie ever. A few years back my friends and I rented that, Evil Dead and Eraserhead on the same night. Some strange night, to put it lightly, but I liked Re-Animator the best of the bunch. Well, this thread is off to a rip-roaring start, as per usual with my threads. Has anyone seen a film called The Burning? I've never talked about it on here before, but I really enjoy it; a really underrated gem from the golden age of slashers, featuring fantastic makeup effects (and one truly infamous and gory sequence known today as "The Raft Scene") by Tom Savini. Plus, it features George Costanza himself as the film's requisite "Joker" camper. His comic timing is already in full swing in this early '80s film. Highly recommend it.

He might be crazy, but damn, Jeffrey Combs is hot in that flick.

I remember one crazy night, a bunch of us NAVY guys and gals stayed late at our base hospital and just threw a big pizza party, and watched ReAnimator, Army of Darkness, and, believe it or not, I Spit on Your Grave.
Pretty uneven, and ultimately, ODD film choices for a horrorfest. But we wanted to start out light and go as dark as we could tolerate. One friend supplied the movies, and one bought the pizza....I bought the drinks, and goddamn, by the time I Spit On Your Grave rolled....everyone had pretty much decided that food wasn't looking so good anymore. That's when the alcohol started to flow.
Good GOD that movie is brutal. And not in a Saw or Hostel kind of way...a very dirty, filthy, unclean kind of brutal.

Re-Animator is quite possibly my favorite oddball horror flick of all time. I'm not a big fan of the Evil Dead films, and I don't really know why; the brand of humor just isn't my thing. Not an opinion that's going to make me very popular around these parts, but still. Probably why I never did an ED franchise review - it would have just been three reviews of me bitching. Half the movie = rape scenes, followed by second half = murder scenes. Definitely not a movie I can watch over and over, but while I forget half of all movies by the time I exit the theater, I'll never forget that one.

Yeah, I Spit On Your Grave is rough. Ever able to get a copy of it back in your store, DP? ;D The Mario Bava tally so far: Black Sunday - ** Black Sabbath, a.k.a. The Three Faces of Fear - *** The Girl Who Knew Too Much - * 1/2 Kill, Baby, Kill - *** 1/2 Sometime today I'm going to watch Lisa and the Devil, which is supposedly a masterpiece (although I know how that's gone so far with movies of his that are called that very thing). Thoughts on it later.

Remind me, DP, has Carolina played yet this week? I'm flipping between the obscure horror movie that probably only I give a crap about and my Vikings game...and that takes dexterity, I tell ya. ;D
ADDED: Just finished Lisa and the Devil. The plot defies to make any amount of sense, despite use of flow charts, pie graphs, and any and all mathematical formulas.
Essentially, it's the story of a bunch of people doomed to repeat their mistakes for all of eternity, with Telly Savalas as Satan himself (not joking) using dummies that contain each of the characters' souls as the means for exacting eternal justice. While there's a few suspenseful scenes (including some chase/murder scenes that clearly influenced Argento's TRUE masterpiece Suspiria), overall, I didn't give a crap about the characters in the slightest. There's also a re-cut version of this film called House of Exorcism that is on this very disc, but I'm going to skip it. I didn't care for The Exorcist, so I don't think a blatant attempt to cash in on its success would be my thing.
Unnecessarily complicated and terminally dull. Hardly a masterpiece.

Carolina plays at 8:15 PM on Sunday Night Football. It's the Giants vs. the Panthers for the number one seed in the NFC. Home feild advantage throughout the playoffs is on the line.

Something else to watch tonight besides more Bava movies. Now, I've really liked a couple of them, but yeesh...they're not like the slasher movies that I love so much that I can watch over and over and over and still enjoy every time. Can't say I regret the purchase, however. I need to keep up with my buying splurge if I'm ever going to catch DSR's 300+ horror film collection (I'm currently at 119). ;D

"Kill, Baby... Kill" has one of my favorite scenes from a horror movie... ever. When the hero is running through the endless series of rooms that look the same, after that guy...
A real classic. I'm surprised that no one else has ever tried that (or have they? I haven't seen it in any more current films).

A pretty rough one to watch is Cannibal Holocaust. It's pretty gruesome. I love horror films, but this one was really tough to watch. There are nice touches to it, but it's not a film I'd want to watch over and over.
I've never seen the Re-Animator movies. I keep meaning too. Evil Dead 2 is my all-time zombie flick, then it's Dawn of The Dead (the original, but the remake is ok), Return Of The Living Dead, Dead/Alive....I'm a fanatic for Zombie movies.
I also love Rob Zombie's work. His stuff is a lot like the horror movies that were made in the 70s. That's probably why they all take place in the 70s.
I grew up on this stuff and used to do horror film fests all the time. I miss those days.

Re-Animator is pretty good. Director Stuart Gordon also adapted Lovecraft's From Beyond and Dreams in the Witchhouse (DitW was for the Masters of Horror). Theme of Gordon's Lovecraft adaptations: same basic premise, changed in time, with ample nudity, and the addition of female characters necessary to supply said nudity.

To me, watching his movies is like listening to someone horribly botch a comedian's punchline. Zombie is the douchy guy, and '70s horror films (mostly Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which he obviously has a tremendous boner for) are Dane Cook. That, and man, is he ever obsessed with rednecks and skanks. "Kill, Baby... Kill" has one of my favorite scenes from a horror movie... ever. I agree with you TR. This movie is IMO some of Tom Savini's best work. Highly, highly recommend film. Added obscure info from the life of TR: a friend of mine in high school named his band Down on Glazer as a tribute to that movie. ;D Now that was an interesting movie I just saw - Bay of Blood, a.k.a. Twitch of the Death Nerve. Crystal Lake Memories, the book about the history of the F13 series, cited this movie as perhaps the first true slasher film, and while I wouldn't go quite that far, it definitely has a body count befitting the later misadventures of Myers, Voorhees, et. al. It's also got a slightly better plot than I'm used to with these movies. *** So, I got...just one more horror movie in the Bava box set (the rest of them are films of other genres) along with Blood and Black Lace, a movie not included in the set that I ordered a few days ago. THEN I can actually move on to movies that people might give a crap about... ;D In the meantime, how 'bout this question for everyone - what's the last horror movie you saw, and assign it a grade on whatever scale you prefer (stars, letters, etc.).

Mmmmm.....Bava. I have GOT to get a box set of his. Not that I haven't had a chance to, it's just something that, for some stupid reason, I haven't acted on yet. Really, I truly DO wish that the younger guys and gals would give the giallo genre a look see. There are plenty of awesome films and directors in the genre, and although a great many of the films lack the action punch today's horror fan may expect, they are, quite frankly, amazing films. I think the last horror film I watched was A TALE OF TWO SISTERS. Man, oh man....I had heard great things about this, and I remember catching about the first half of it at a friend's house, and not being very impressed....but actually sitting down, and watching the DVD, free of distractions, in my darkened living room....this film just AMAZED me. On the surface, you might be tempted, as I erroneously did on my first semi viewing, to dismiss it as just another bit of J-horror. That would be a grievious mistake, as there is just so much MORE to it. The story of two sisters, their undying love for each other, and the fractured family they come from, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS is so heartwrenching, and so deeply layered, that it will keep you guessing up to the final frame, and when all is revealed, it will break your heart. Folks, this is a horror film with something to say, and a story to tell, and though it DOES have grue and guts to it....they are almost there as an afterthought, and honestly, the story and it's labrynthine twists and turns takes center stage. After so many slick Hollywood horror films that just pile on the gore atop a paper thin plot and piss poor acting, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS was a welcome relief. **** out of four.
