Round 23 is here.
In the event of a tie both will carry on to the next day to meet some other challenger. I will try and vary the sources from comics to TV show characters.
I'm also going to add a bit of story to this to make it interesting, it's still a favorite poll but it's going to have continuity!
I will happily take requests for future opponents. But in the meantime we have to continue the story ...
--------------------------------------
*Last time Gambit was facing down the Predator X which had attacked the X-Mansion*
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d3/Xmansion.jpg)
*The Predator leaps but Gambit rolls to one side fling some charged cards which impact on the Predators hide doing little damage. The creature turns and readies to punce again it's jaws and teeth glistening with feral hunger.*
Gambit: "Quick I'll give you that, but not quick enough"
*Gambit extends his staff and charges it, the creature leaps and Gambit jams the pole down its gullet. the Predator pauses for a moment before blowing apart.*
Gambit: "I really liked that quaterstaff"
*Gambit goes to help Beast from under the rubble but before any explanation can be given a strange man is seen at the window*
Beast: "Who is that masked man"
![](http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e99/Jokerspack/big_burglar.gif)
*The man realises he has been spotted but then gets hit by a large hammer. Gambit rushes out the front and flings some charged cards. The explosion creates a cloud and as it clears we see the burglar halfway down the lawn carrying a mutant control collar clearly stolen from Beast lab. Meanwhile the mysterious hammer man gets to his feet*
Steel: "You let him get away, are you in league with that thief Gambit?"
*Will Gambit defeat Steel??*
Gambit
![](http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e99/Jokerspack/Superheroes/Gambit_by_JPRart.jpg)
A mutant, Gambit possesses the ability to manipulate kinetic energy. This is manifest both internally and externally, energy charges his body giving him greater strength, stamina, and agility than any non-powered human, As well as being able to charge matter resulting in the violent and disproportionately powerful explosion of said matter through touch. The object he charges explode with a force somewhat proportional to the size of the object, though a playing card is as powerful as a hand grenade in Gambit's hands. Gambit has the ability to charge living as well is non living matter, though this ability is the source of much controversy in Gambit's life as well as the continuity and nature of the character. He almost never charges organic matter. He is also skilled in card throwing, hand-to-hand combat, and the use of a staff. A professional thief, few X-Men trusted Gambit when he first joined the group, a source of stress between him and his longtime on-again, off-again love interest Rogue. This was exacerbated when his connections to villain Mister Sinister were revealed, although some of his team members accept that Gambit honestly seeks redemption. As the X-Men's self-described ladies man, Gambit has shown a more vulnerable side of himself over the years, especially when it comes to Rogue. Gambit remains fiercely proud of his Louisiana heritage, and speaks in a very thick, Cajun accent. One of his defining traits is that he used to be a smoker, along with Wolverine.
vs
Steel
![](http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e99/Jokerspack/Superheroes/Steel_John_Henry_Irons.jpg)
Doctor John Henry Irons was a brilliant weapons engineer for AmerTek Industries, who eventually became disgusted when the BG-60, a powerful man-portable energy cannon he had designed, fell into the wrong hands and was used to kill innocent people. As the company would have coerced him to retain his services, John faked his death, and eventually came to Metropolis. While working a construction job high up on a skyscraper, he fell off while saving a friend from the same fate. His own life was saved by none other than Superman. When John Irons asked how he could show his gratitude, Superman told him to "live a life worth saving." During Superman's fatal battle against Doomsday, Irons attempted to help Superman fight the deadly menace by picking up a sledge hammer, but was buried in rubble amidst the devastation. Shortly after Superman's death, he finally awoke and crawled from the wreckage, confused and saying that he "must stop Doomsday." He recovered, but to discover that the gangs in inner-city Metropolis (now unopposed by Superman) were fighting a devastating gang war using BG-80 Toastmasters, an upgraded version of his earlier AmerTek design. Irons created and donned a suit of powered armor in Superman's memory in order to stop the war, as well as the weapons, which were being distributed by Dr. Angora Lapin (a.k.a. The White Rabbit), a former partner and lover of his during his time at AmerTek Industries. John Henry Irons has no superhuman abilities; however, he is an extraordinary inventor and engineer, and wears a suit of powered armor which grants him flight, super strength, and endurance. A large hammer is also a key weapon in the suit's arsenal. His most current "smart hammer" hits harder the farther it is thrown, is capable of independent flight, and has an onboard computer guidance and analysis system capable of detecting a target's stress points. During the 52 event, John Henry Irons was altered by the Everyman Project and had become composed of stainless steel due to Lex Luthor tampering with John's DNA without John's consent. Steel's strength and durability are now on a superhuman level. In addition, he can generate enough heat to turn metal fluid (including his own body, which he can then drip off of himself in small amounts). It is currently unclear exactly how he generates the heat, though it may be somewhat electric or kinetic in nature.
