New Line Cinema announced today that they will release their reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street in theaters on April 16, 2010. Shooting for the remake begins next month in Chicago with Samuel Bayer behind the camera. Should be interesting to see how this one ends up. I've read places that Nancy won't be the "survivor girl", so that right there makes me question this remake more than I did before. But as with all remakes I must give it a fair shake, even if part of me thinks that of all slashers Nightmare is least in need of messing with. In other pointless rambling in the last 3 days I have watched: (Rec): Fabulous gem of a film. Even though I couldn't understand a word they said, and was reading subtitles I cared about each damn character in this film. So good on it for drawing me in, jaded fan that I am when it comes to messing witht he zombie genre. From top to bottom this movie was aces. If you haven't seen it, do so. Let the right one in: Dark, dreary, and depressing. But just beautifully shot, and totally engaging. Even though it was a bit overly long, and could have maybe had about 20-30 minutes trimmed, (I have no idea where from though), it was still awesome. The finally was great, and good on them for showing what happens when I vampire enters un-invited. Which is something that is either ignored or shown to be they simply can't in my experience. Give this one a try. Evil Dead The Musical: This was some of the funniest shit I've seen in an El Sobrante Fortnight, (*wonders if anybody gets that reference*). Gory, hilarious, self-referential, silly, and brain melting are all apt adjectives. Catchy songs, great in jokes, and perfect merging of all three films into a 2 hour performance, (rough estimate on time since I was to busy laughing to track it). The girl that played Cheryl stole the show in my estimation, but every cast member was awesome. Of course this was the original cast from a few years back, so I can't tell you how it will play if you see a newer version. I guess there's rumors of turing it into a movie if they can get the rights worked out, but both Sam and Bruce have blessed this idea. Make sure you see this.

As for Jason X, some of the dialogue is just plain terrible. I cringed when that guy called Jason Slappy... "This sucks on SO many levels"..... *shudder*

I'm actually fine and dandy with whatever they decide to do with the Nightmare remake, including making a different character the heroine. Despite the fact that I've hashed and rehashed it in about ten different threads, might as well do it again - I politely disagree with you, VMS, and actually think that of all the slasher series ANOES is the one that DESPERATELY needs the overhaul, both in terms of the quality of the original picture and in terms of the wacky fun one-liner machine that Freddy Krueger became in the later sequels.
Basically, I just think that the whole series needs ANYTHING to add some new flavor to the recipe, so kudos to PD for doing something different. Any word yet on who's playing Freddy?

I think that would be awesome.

His is a face that is not yet burned into the pop culture psyche', and he could really bring a creepy, sick side of Freddy to the screen without people readily seeing the actor behind the makeup. Now....who for Nancy?

Can you say "POSTER OF THE YEAR" for 2009? ;D His is a face that is not yet burned into the pop culture psyche', and he could really bring a creepy, sick side of Freddy to the screen without people readily seeing the actor behind the makeup. Exactly - and precisely the reason why it CANNOT be someone like Billy Bob Thornton. There's no doubt that Thornton is a great actor and could probably play the role very well, but everyone and their dog sees him as "that funny-looking guy who does raunchy comedies" - and would expect the same from his portrayal of Freddy Krueger. No name actors allowed in this role. This was one of the reasons why I was a proponent of Murphy getting the role - no doubt he's a respected actor, but he's FAR from a household name, just like Haley.

I understand, somewhat where you're coming from. But I don't really mean the series as a whole with my previous statement. Just the first movie. If they wanted to scrap 2-7, and make this an Incredible Hulk like sequel I'd be totally fine with that. The first one to me is probably the second most perfect slasher, (after Halloween), and even on some level tops Carpenter's classic. *shrugs* To each their own though.

No comments on the Elm Street remake, seeing as I made my feelings quite clear on the subject in the first thread (although my actual reasoning is a far cry from the typical "REMAKES=TEH SUXXORZ" argument, before anyone thinks I'm one of *those* people)...

And it's still not as much of an abortion as that "Young Re-Animator" pilot that's floating around out there.

Looks like it's going to be kind of slow-going as far as new horror movies at the multiplex for a while. If you include the Nicholas Cage film Knowing (what happens when the numbers run out? Hopefully the end of the movie - credit to mysterydriver ;D) as a kinda-sorta thriller movie, there's a grand total of three movies on the horizon, and all of them are getting released this month. We got Last House on the Left next week, and Haunting in Connecticut two weeks after that.
Looking at those three movies, I've come to the conclusion that I'm actually MOST excited to see various horror remakes, because the two original movies listed above don't exactly set my world on fire (not that Last House on the Left looks crazy awesome, either ;D).

It may be slow going at the multiplex, but as usual DVD will give us the standard bit of good horror, mixed with crap. Here's a list from upcominghorror.com, of the film that finish out March:
MARCH 6 The Horsemen (Limited Release) Aidan Breslin is a bitter detective emotionally distanced from his two young sons following the untimely death of his devoted wife. While investigating a series of murders of rare violence, he discovers a terrifying link between himself and the suspects in a chain of murders that seem to be based on the Biblical prophecies concerning the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death.
MARCH 10 Crowley (DVD) A shy Cambridge professor transforms into the reincarnation of Aleister Crowley via a superconductor mainframe, who wreaks havoc on the students and faculty.
MARCH 17 Walled In (DVD) A young female demolition expert named "Sam" takes a supposedly easy job to conduct a structural analysis on a building located in the remote Scottish swamps, however the thought-to-be empty building is still home to a few lingering tenants, including the caretaker and her 15 year old boy. Forced to stay the night while conducting her analysis, Sam's paranoia builds up and she eventually comes face to face with her own terrors and who or what continues to haunt the mysterious building.
MARCH 25 Sauna (TV) Year 1595 - the long war is finally over. Brothers Knut and Erik - who are part of the commission marking the border between Finland and Russia - commit a terrible sin as they leave a young girl to die a horrible death. As the commission crosses the uncharted swamp the girl returns to haunt them, her face pouring endless filth. Weary men find solace from the nameless village and find a sauna - The sauna where all sins are washed away.
MARCH 31 Autopsy (DVD) It's about a group of kids as they venture to a spooky and mysterious hospital, where they become trapped and encounter "bad stuff".
The Broken (DVD) On a busy street in London, Gina thinks she sees herself drive past in her own car. Stunned by this strange event, Gina follows the mystery woman up to her apartment. From here, events take an eerie turn for the worse until Gina's awareness slides from solid reality into a world that will haunt more than just her nightmares.
The Butterfly Effect: Revelation (DVD) Revolves around a young man, who discovers he has inherited the powers of "The Butterfly Effect" and attempts to solve the mystery of his high school girlfriend's death using his newfound ability, only to unwittingly unleash a vicious serial killer.
Dying Breed (DVD) Tells the story of four people conducting field research into the Tasmanian tiger who stumble across the descendants of a cannibal tribe.
From Within (DVD) Follows a girl whose strict Christian upbrigining in a small town has made her want to see the outside world, but before she can actually leave, townspeople begin to die mysteriously, leaving them to speculate that she may have something to do with the deaths.
Perkins' 14 (DVD) The story follows a man named "Robert Perkins" who at age six, witnesses the brutal murder of his parents, causing him to become mentally unstable. He lives the rest of his life convinced that the killers will return to murder him. Now an adult, Perkins kidnaps 14 people from his hometown and brainwashes them, creating a unified team of killers to help protect him.
Slaughter (DVD) Follows a young woman who flees from her life of abuse and settles down on a family farm, but discovers that something far more sinister awaits her there.
Voices (DVD) Revolves around a young girl who believes she is cursed after having many of her family and friends die in the most brutal ways imaginable. She must discover the mystery behind these killings before she too becomes a victim.
(I editied out Theatrical movies hitting DVD.)
