I got back from the show a little while ago. Here's some of my thoughts...
First of all, I had a chance to catch The Wrestler before the show. I liked it and would definitely recommend it...especially to a wrestling fan. It doesn't portray wrestling in the best light at times, but I think we can all agree that the stuff that happens in the movie does happen in wrestling, so...it's not like they were making stuff up to make the business look bad. Yes, a lot of it is kind of amplified, but hey, it's a movie.
While I was waiting to get into the theatre, I saw Larry Sweeney, Adam Pearce, Claudio Castagnoli, and Sara Del Rey going into a different showing of The Wrestler. Del Rey had to use the bathroom...leaving the three guys to wait in the lobby with me. I used that as my chance to say hello to them, thank them for their hard work, and let them know that I was looking forward to the show later on in the evening. On the inside, I was dying and wanted to ask a million questions, but hey...they were there to just see a movie, not be hounded by a fan. They were real class acts, though. All three of them thanked me right back for being a fan and shook my hand. Definitely one of the coolest moments, if not THE coolest moment, I've had as a wrestling fan.
Apparently, Jimmy Jacobs (and maybe others) were in that showing, too, but I didn't see them.
So, I get to the auditorium that I'm seeing The Wrestler in. The place is getting packed and I look down at the entrance way and holy crap...there's Nigel McGuinnes, Roderick Strong, Erick Stevens, and Brent Albright...and they're in the same movie theatre as me. Unfortunately, the place was pretty packed and the only spot they could find 4 seats together was in the second row all the way at the bottom. What's crazy is that Nigel has a small part in the movie. When the part came on, I was like "holy crap...that guy on the screen is the same guy that's in the second row of the movie theatre that I'm in!!!" Another very cool moment as a wrestling fan for me.
Anyway, to get to the actual ROH show...
The opener was fun for an opener. I don't think that Claudio and Omega were on the exact same wavelength, but they managed to make it fun.
The 4 way started out a bit slow, but turned out to be real fun. Rhett Titus is such a character. I love him. Necro actually did some chain wrestling, which popped the crowd good. The crowd pop disgusted Chris Hero. Classic reaction by the Young KO Kid.
The tag title match was very solid. I love Steen and Generico together. They're so much fun. The Delirious/Daizee saga continues. You know, I usually don't like love storylines, but I'm loving this one.
The street fight was awesome. Everything was just so stiff. My chest hurt from watching these guys chop each other. An accidental funny/gross moment happened when Brent Albright jumped into the ring and we all realized that his pants had ripped. He then proceeded to get Shiozaki (I believe) in an armbar and then bridged...giving my section a great shot of his split pants. Not cool.
The Briscoes vs. Sasaki/Nakajima was solid. During the match, a fan (maybe two) got thrown out. Idiots.
I'm loving how the American Wolves went after the Briscoes the night after going after Steenerico. If you're going to make an impact as a tag team, you have to go after the big guns. I can't wait for the American Wolves to get into some heated battles with those two teams.
After the match, Cary agreed to Albright's request for a steel cage match. He initially wanted it at tonight's show, but it didn't happen. Believe it or not, I was kind of happy as this show didn't really need a cage match to be awesome. They have some options as to when they'll do it and I'm interested in when that will be. A PPV? Philly? NYC? A smaller area to try and get more of a crowd? No matter what, it should be a great match.
Aries vs. Black was great. Absolutely loved it. Kind of a funny moment...to me. Black countered Aries' counter to the headscissors. Aries questioned Tyler on how he knew to do that. Tyler says, "I'm young, but I'm not stupid." Aries grabs Tyler into a headlock and says "You are stupid." I found it funny. Black and Jacobs finally going at it after the match was great to see. Aries completing the heel turn after a few shows of hinting at it got great heat. Excellent double turn, ROH.
I didn't get to see what happened between the fans and Aries. But man, Paul Turner became the biggest babyface for it. He got a HUGE pop and the "Next World Champ" chant for him was so loud. He was a great sport for going along with the chant.
Nigel/Marufuji was excellent. Loved it. Hopefully there's a rubber match down the rood because these guys are magic when they touch.
The Fight Without Honor was excellent. Dragon, while his music was playing, attacked Morishima from behind. Morishima ended up in the crowd. Dragon springboarded onto Morishima in the crowd. Dragon got up just in time to soak in the "It's the FINAL COUNTDOOOOOOWN!!!" That was fun. And the rest of the match was just great. Great, great, great.

Yeah, it was one hell of a fun day. Definitely one that I'll never forget.
By the way, I failed big time for not mentioning how great it was to see Nana again. But I think that my day was so full of win that I should be allowed a pass on this one, right? Please?

LOTS OF NOTES AND NEWS FROM RING OF HONOR FINAL BATTLE 2008 WEEKEND by Mike Johnson @ 12:06 PM on 12/28/2008 Representatives of HDNet were at both the ECW Arena and The Hammerstein Ballroom this weekend, which will only strengthen discussion that some sort of deal may be imminent between the HD cable network and Ring of Honor, but nothing is set in stone at this time. The company's top goal is to land a TV deal to help increase their awareness. In a production upgrade, ROH has purchased four new cameras in an effort to increase the look of their DVDs. I was told the new cameras cost in the area of $13,000 each. The cameras are the same style that were used at the last ROH PPV taping. The consensus among those in the company was that the Hammerstein Ballroom show was the better event of the weekend. There was a feeling that they put a good show on before the Philadelphia crowd, but that the audience is so burnt out and jaded, it's hard to get a rise out of them. In comparison, the Hammerstein was more of an "up" crowd, especially for the main events. The Kensuke Sasaki & Katsuhiko Nakajima victory over Roderick Strong & Brent Albright was said to have been the best match in Philadelphia. In my opinion, the best match on the Hammerstein show, by far, was Nigel McGuinness over Naomichi Marufuji to retain the ROH title. The best moment of the show was easily Bryan Danielson's attack of Takeshi Morishima to start their Fight without Honor as the crowd sang "Final Countdown", almost a nod to the old ECW segments playing New Jack's theme song, but in an entirely different light. We have live reports from both events this weekend on the main page currently. I'd like to thank Stuart Carapola for all his work this weekend. For those who have asked about it, here was the jist of the Austin Aries incident last night. Following his heel turn, Aries was heading backstage when a fan grabbed his shoulder and spun Aries around to face him. (Probably correctly) believing that the fan was about to lay his hands on him, Aries laid the fan out with one punch. I saw the incident and I thought the fan was about to nail Aries, so it was a case of Aries protecting himself. At this point, the first fan's friend lost his mind and tried to get over the rail at Aries, who backed away to put room between them. As the fan tried to reach for Aries, referee Paul Turner came charging and shoved the second fan down on his rear and stood between Aries and the second fan until security pulled the fans out of the venue. When Turner returned to the ring, he got the second biggest pop of the night and the crowd chanted, "Next World champ." Turner acknowledged the crowd then put his finger to his lips to sssh them as he didn't want to detract from the ROH title match he was about to referee. From seeing the NYC show last night, which I'll go into deep detail on my Elite hotline tomorrow, I really felt like we were watching the end of an era within ROH. While Adam Pearce, Cary Silkin, Jerry Lynn, etc. were the driving forces behind the running of the weekend, these were the last shows featuring matches and talents that were put into motion by Gabe Sapolsky as were the deals for all the Japanese talent coming in. From this point on, everything we see is from the distinct creative soul of the new regime, creating a really intriguing period for the company in my opinion. The next weekend I am most interested in seeing is the Houston events in Texas as they'll have several months to set that up and get a good idea of future pushes, storylines, direction, etc. by then. In terms of the new mindset to not let the undercard go crazy and outshine the main events, my feeling after watching the Hammerstein show was that it will take some getting used to, but in terms of not burning out the crowd live, you can see how it worked in that regard. I have no problem with the shows being trimmed and the occasional "major event" such as last night, going a little longer to add to the importance of the event. The real question to be answered is how the changes will relate to DVD sales, if they do at all and that's something we won't know for awhule. A lot of the ROH staff and crew went to see "The Wrestler" yesterday since it was playing in Times Square just a 5-10 minute walk from the Hammerstein Ballroom. The film features Necro Butcher in a featured role plus cameos from Nigel McGuinness, Claudio Castagnoli and even ROH VP Syd Euck. The film's closing sequence takes place at an ROH event. Roderick Strong has really dropped a lot of weight of late. Jerry Lynn is obviously going to be a major babyface going into 2009 and given how hard they are pushing him, I wouldn't be shocked to see him end up ROH champion at some point. It's very odd to see Necro Butcher being used almost as a straight-forward wrestler by the company when he's the insane blood and guts guy in "The Wrestler" especially since ROH was tying themselves so closely to "The Wrestler" with local advertising and in recent media accounts of the company. Marc Briscoe's knee "injury" last night was part of the match, not another flare-up. ROH is running a 35-40% off sale currently at www.rohwrestling.com. ROH will return to the Hammerstein Ballroom on 3/21/09.

obviously from reading about all the after the match antics with fans you can tell Aries and Jacobs didnt leave together. I dont think it was a case of Aries joining the AOTF just two guys who hate Tyler putting the boots to him. Delirious and Jimmy didnt leave together after their incident but Jimmy didnt kick him out of the group or anything like that. as for the rest, real good show by ROH last night. I was never concerned that it wouldnt be with all the talent on hand but with a new booking style and leader you never know. with the new year coming up Pearce's booking plans and style should be fleshed out even more. cheap heat by Claudio wearing the Sox jersey. I do believe he wore it in Boston when he was a face though so at least it wasnt totally out of nowhere. Omega looks solid,he brings some different moves and is smooth in the ring. I wonder where he goes from here? Lynn gets the well deserved W. man Hero is sucky, most of those strikes either dont connect well or dont look like there is anything behind them. Titus was ok,solid but could be a little faster. tag title defense was solid. i never thought the champs were in danger but it was good to see Steen overcome the injured knee. in the six man street fight lots of outside action especially early, everyone looked good IMO, especially Albright and Davey. to complete a stellar year the Briscoes beat Kensuke Sasaki & Katsuhiko Nakajima after almost getting squashed for the better part of the match. Sasake no sold more that early 90's Undertaker, after seeing the previous nights match i wasnt surprised by the way this one went. just glad Jay and Mark could put together something at the end. real good action here. steel cage warfare is on again. id think the didnt want it on this show because it was already loaded. could the heels finally win one? Aries had been moody lately and he seemed to be getting tired of all his sacrifices and hard work getting overlooked while Tyler was getting his ass kicked so his turn wasnt a surprise. I done see him being in the AOTF(if it still exists going forward). Nigel and Marufuji followed with a real good match. Nigel tried going for the Tower of London in out of the ring a couple times before hitting it. he tried maybe four or five lariats, not connecting on the first couple. id have to think Bryan Danielson defeating Takeshi Morishima in a Fight Without Honor was everything we've all waited for. brutality by two guys who seem to hate each other. Dragon attacking before the bell, coming out of the crowd and knocking Morishima around real good all before his music ended was outstanding. i was glad Nana got a few seconds on the mic before he got taken away by security. stop being a jerk bag Bobby Cruise, let the man speak.

Both sound like great shows. I'll definitely have to pick them up. It's sad though... out of everything that happened, the thing I care most about is the Friday night dark match between the Ninjas and Ernie Osiris and Bobby Shields. I have to ask: Why Bobby Shields? Out of all of the guys they could have picked up from the Pittsburgh scene, why did they go with him? It's not that he's bad or anything. His "best out of three" match with Dash Bennett at the PWX Anniversary Show was really great. It's that he's just... um... kind of "there" at the moment. He doesn't have main event status (not by a long shot), he really doesn't have much of a character since he went face, and his move set is "basic" at best. I'm glad that the guy is getting a shot at the big time and everything. I just wish they would have taken a look at some of the more established talent in the area first (Shiima Xion and Jason Gory, Ray Rowe, Chris LeRusso, etc).

Larry Sweeney was nice to you? WHAT AM I DOING WRONG You approached him in his personal space AFTER a show. Wrestlers tend to hate that. Not saying I haven't done the same thing or that you're fully in the wrong, but it's 100% to be expected from the boys (heels especially, who many fans suddenly think are going to go OOC as soon as the final bell rings). Fact is, most of them would tell you to "stick it" if they went out-of-character following any show. This guy recognized the group during their "down time," when they were all obviously chilling, AND he didn't stick any paraphanelia in their face or try to force them to DO anything.

Damn...I knew I should have gone to see The Wrestler before. And I had on my WWLSD shirt, too. Dem! Anyhow, yeah, Morishima/Danielson was brutal. AmDrag pearl harboring Shima at the beginning of the match was amazing, especially the dive into the crowd. It didn't take long for Danielson to bleed, and he was a mess for the whole match. Morishima was covered in his blood for a good portion. And the introduction of the chain, and the use of it on the elbow strkies was crazy. Also cool, Danielson inviting people to the after-show party...if they could find it. I asked Carey where it was, and he said he didn't know. I don't believe him. ;D Oh, and it was amazing seeing the crowd break into a HOLY S*** chant when Necro hit a wrestling move. Great show, and once again, I love the NY crowds. Even the drunken idiot ones. Mike Johnson does bring up a good point. This might be one of the last shows that has the tinge of Sapolsky on it, and the next time I see a ROH show, it could be a completely different beast that what I watched Saturday night. And that makes me a little sad. But I am honored to have been there if it does end up that way.

Final Battle was AWESOME. I'd put the last half of the show up there against any other.
Oh, and a thousand times NO to Jerry Lynn winning the ROH World Title. I like the guy, but not that much.

There was a feeling that they put a good show on before the Philadelphia crowd, but that the audience is so burnt out and jaded, it's hard to get a rise out of them. Yes seriously. The Philly crowd was horrible. People chanting shit to get themselves over. While some of it was funny (re Jerry: He wrestled Moses for the commandments) it just made it harder for me to watch the show and clap and make noise and stuff. I only went for Kensuke Office so that was nice but I'm not going back to Philly unless there is something awesome.

So I left Albany at 1 pm thinking I had pleanty of time to get to Long Island to my buddy's sister's house, and then take the train to the show. Boy, was I wrong. First off, I hate Mapquest, who had me go all the way down to the GW Bridge then sit on the Cross Bronx for an hour, only to get to the Cross-Island and sit on that for an hour. Then I got lost twice on the Island, and finally got to my destination at 6:15. I said hello's and we jetted for the train station to catch the 6:40 to Penn Station. I knew this would put us in at the show after 8, but the start is always delayed, so I figured we'd miss a match or two, nothing big. We get to the station and as we're getting out of the car, the 6;40 train leaves. So we had to wait for the 7:40, and we walked into the Hammerstein as the count was being made in the Briscoes/Kensuke Office match.
That being said, Aries/Black was terrific, 'fuji/Nigel was great (though disappointing), and the main event was brutal.

Dude, I completely forgot to tell you--I stole a dollar from Ernie Osiris.
After his victory in the pre-show, he was holding his begging cup behind his back while taunting the losers. Well, he just happened to be standing right in front of me as he did this. And there just happened to be a single dollar accordioned right inside it, sticking up all lonely and begging for me like a lover who hasn't seen me in years.
So I yoinked the little bastard out! Take THAT, homeless people around the world!
...Unfortunately, a kid a few seats down screamed "HE TOOK YOUR DOLLAR!!!"; Ernie looked over and took it back, cussing me out.
Greedy bastard. V_V
