Is it sad when you have to go on the internet just to fully understand a movie? I watched Sleepaway Camp twice and still didn't completely get it. Maybe I'm just losing it. Interesting movie, but confusing as hell. Thanks, Wikipedia. That's the thing I love about Sleepaway Camp. The experience you go through the first time you see it is really something else. I don't know if the film-makers even did it this way intentionally, but they sucker you into thinking that you're watching a fairly tame '80s horror film. Then the last half-hour gets really intense, they waylay you with that unbelievable ending, and then virtually EVERYTHING in the film beforehand involving the Angela character takes on an entirely new meaning. Just like you did, I too had to watch the movie again immediately after finishing it for the first time.

Also, reference the new SAW VI tagline, like I said in the SAW VI thread, this seems to be pointing towards a jigsaw cult following type thing which could possible do damage on the scale of Halloween's Thorn story. I hope not though, I just wish they'd let a great series (IMO) die with dignity.

I gotta see this Sleepaway Camp film, I've heard lots of good things about it. Therein lies the double-edged sword of that movie. I saw the movie knowing absolutely nothing about it, with nobody filling my head up about its legendary ending; I rented it just because it looked like another '80s slasher movie, and man, was I ever surprised by it. The mistake I've made with everyone that I've loaned the movie out to is pumping it up too much before they watch it, and without fail, I've gotten the "it sucks" "how could you not see that ending coming? I thought you said it was surprising!" "the acting was really bad" etc. comments back. Not saying you won't enjoy it, Ken, but in a way it's the Citizen Kane of horror flicks. Those who see it without knowing the advance hype love it, while everyone who HAS heard all of the heaping praise that it gets likely go "that's it?" after watching it.

TR my friend was the same way, except he didn't say it sucked. But I, and others, hyped up the super twist at the end so much that he said he spent the whole movie looking for every little clue and figured it out. He's not one to lie about that sorta thing either.

I'd heard all the hype and even knew about the ending but still liked the movie a lot. The flashbacks were what confused me. Now it all makes sense. Sort of.

To offer my 2 cents on Sleepaway Camp, I had an idiot friend of mine completely give away the ending before I saw it. So, I never really saw it the way most people do the first time where they see the movie in a completely different light than subsequent viewings. Although I will say that despite knowing the ending in advance, it was still shocking to see unfold.

Same experience for me, but replace "an idiot friend of mine" with "that one episode of Robot Chicken." And honestly, knowing that wonked-out ending was what made me look for the movie in the first place. And yeah, like you said, its a pretty shocking little twist, even if you see it coming.

Well, who would have expected? A former stripper as a writer teams up with the star whom many dub as merely a stripper to produce what is, in my humble opinion, the pleasant surprise thus far of the 2009 Halloween horror release season. Jennifer's Body is far from a masterpiece, but you can definitely do a lot worse for the price of admission, and I'll say this - it kept me awake. Either I need to get a new movie watching day or I need to start taking naps on Friday, but man - the occasion when I can actually sit through an entire movie in a theater anymore is a rare day indeed. And this movie is definitely raucously entertaining enough to do just that, so who knows what it would do for a fully functional human being? More than anything else, this movie is a testament to the writing ability of Diablo Cody. While I wasn't a huge fan of Juno, I did admire the pretty weird, and sometimes brilliant, dialogue. While neither of the films I've seen that she has scripted can be classified as realistic by any means, the high school setting of this film is much more authentic than the alternate reality seen in Juno; the dialogue is fresh, snappy, funny, and sometimes knock-your-balls-off hilarious. From a plotting perspective, this flick actually managed to surprise me on a few occasions with the way the story unfolded. Lastly, as a horror fan, I thought I had this movie pegged from the get-go just by seeing the trailers and TV ads; I'll gladly admit that I was completely wrong on pretty much all of my predictions. In Jennifer's Body, Needy Lesnicky (Amanda Seyfried of Mamma Mia!) and Jennifer (Megan Fox) of Devil's Kettel, Minnesota (yes!) have been best friends since childhood. Cody's script pays a lot of attention to the strange love-hate relationship between the two, on more than one occasion even hinting at some fascinating romantic tension. Of course, one of these occasions is extremely unsubtle, but I'll save that little surprise for anyone else who decides to see this movie. The dynamic between the two characters also seems to be one of dominance, as Needy is eternally in agreement with Jennifer, much to the chagrin of Needy's boyfriend Chip (Johnny Simmons). The event that sets Jennifer's Body in motion occurs roughly a quarter of the way into the film, as the two central characters pay a visit to to the small, backwoods bar that serves as a hangout for the local teens. As they watch a band begin their set, a fire unexpectedly erupts, killing several people inside. Jennifer and Needy, along with the members of the band, manage to escape, at which point the lead singer of the band (whom Jennifer had her eyes on) offers her a ride home. What follows is actually some pretty nerve-wracking stuff, as Jennifer shows up at Needy's doorstep later that night, blood dripping from her face and legs, and somehow strangely inhuman. The first scene when we meet "demon Jennifer" is actually a pretty frightening little scene, and admittedly made good ol' TR jump in his seat a little bit. As for the rest of the movie's plot, I'll let you watch it unfold for yourself (and I highly recommend you do), because while it's really nothing that you haven't seen before, I once again have to freely admit that I didn't see the flick's plot unraveling quite the way that it actually wound up doing. As for the performances, firstly, Megan Fox. Believe it or not, she actually shows some promise in a role that requires a little something more than just looking hot and running away from explosions. Granted, the role doesn't require MUCH more than that - she still isn't given much in the way of emotionally overwrought stuff to work with, but she didn't outright bore me the way she did in the Transformers flicks. So if you're turned off of this movie just by Fox, she's not a reason to avoid it. The movie's real discovery is Seyfried. I haven't seen Mamma Mia!, and in scanning through imdb.com, her only other movie that I've seen is Mean Girls...and that a long time ago. I honestly can't remember seeing her in anything else, but both her performance and character in Jennifer's Body are pretty electric stuff. While it's true that Cody doesn't make her an out-and-out saint in the mold of countless slasher film heroines, Seyfried is tough, vulnerable, and strangely relatable in the role of hanger-oner, and aptly named, Needy. As I stated in the opening paragraph, though, this is far from a perfect movie. Cody gets a little carried away with her clever dialogue, sometimes inserting it in jarring fashion in the middle of some of the more suspenseful scenes, and while I praised Fox ever-so-slightly in this movie, there are a few scenes yet that are downright groan-worthy. Don't get me wrong; she's got a LONG way to go. Still, for the amount of pre-release hatred that this movie got on this here message board, to this observer, this was a movie that didn't deserve the bile. *** out of ****.

I just got back from Jennifer's Body and I just have this to say, it was a hell of a lot better than I thought it was going to be. It was nothing like what I expected and I mean that for the better. Infact, I felt it had the potential to be even more than it was but the last 1/4 of it kind of slipped off the track that the rest of the movie set up IMO.
The one thing I didn't like about it is they had a TON of build up for Jennifer and Needy's relationship, that really didn't pay off at the end at all. All the build up to the complicated nature of their friendship/possibly more just pretty much crumbled apart at the end and really didn't play a factor in it.

So Diablo Cody may have made another good film? Looks like she won't be going back to the escort business for a while. Also I wanted to alert anyone who has a blu-ray player to check their local wal-mart. I found evil dead II, Midnight movie, and Carpenter's Halloween blu-rays for $10 bucks! A heck of a deal. And finally, has anyone seen the slasher Night School (1981)? I read about it in going to pieces and want to know more.

All the build up to the complicated nature of their friendship/possibly more just pretty much crumbled apart at the end and really didn't play a factor in it. Oh yeah, agreed on pretty much all this. Didn't mention it in my review for whatever reason, but the point that the movie starts losing a little bit of steam to me is when Jennifer starts seducing Needy's boyfriend. I did enjoy the ending scenes quite a bit, however. I actually thought that the movie had been FANTASTIC up until that point, and was actually ready to give it a four-star review if it would have kept that level up. More than anything else, in this day and age of remakes and retreads, this flick was original all the way, and I highly recommend that people should check this movie out on that merit alone. Especially considering that they had a trailer for the incredibly uninspired Stepfather remake coming up before the movie. As for the Halloween III news, I quite enjoyed MBV3D, and if Lussier can fix this mess of a series, then he's the greatest film-maker of all time. Lastly, Saw mini-reviews: Saw III (2006): I'm just going to make this as painful as possible - I didn't care for this movie. At all. Long, bloated, and extremely repetitive, this movie was some kind of chore to sit through. In addition to those qualities, the character who is the primary lesson learner in this film - Jeff, a man obsessed with revenge against the driver who killed his son - seemed to me to just be a giant douche who lets several innocent people die throughout this film. Also, there's MUCH more emphasis on gore. Tobin Bell, who is onscreen more than in the other movies in the series, is the only saving grace of this one. * out of ****. Saw IV: An improvement over Saw III, that's for sure. Admittedly it's a little hard to follow, as the logistics of a serial killer continuing his work after his death is a little sketchy (to put it lightly), but nonetheless that's what we get with this film. This one focuses on Lieutenant Daniel Rigg, a man obsessed with saving everyone, and the last remaining investigator of the Jigsaw case to remain untouched. Once again, this one seems to run out of steam about halfway through, though, and the big surprise at the end was completely lame. ** out of ****.

Just felt like showing up in here (I really don't have much to contribute lately, and for that I apologize) and say that I picked up Basket Case 3: The Progeny at my local Big Lots for 3 bucks. I just had to complete the trilogy.
Carry on.

I want to watch Basket Case 2 and 3 still, I've only seen one. By the way, the main character(s) from Basket Case make a cameo in a movie called Brain Damage, DSR. But you probably knew that.
