Saw District 9 today didn't plan on going seeing it but my cousin wanted to see it and paid my for ticket. I thought it was ok it's not something I would watch again. one of the trailers they show before the movie was for Zombieland it looks like it could be good Oh yeah - that was one part I forgot to mention in the review. Perhaps the best part about going to see a horror movie at an actual movie theater is the usual "All horror movie trailer" marathon run you get before the movie. ;D Jennifer's Body and Legion look very good, and Zombieland...it's safe to say I'm pretty jacked about Zombieland.

The remake of Children of the Corn will premier on SyFy on Saturday, September 26 at 9pm Eastern/Pacific.
Anchor Bay/Starz releasing 'Children of the Corn' remake on DVD this October.
Arriving on DVD October 6th from Anchor Bay/Starz is the TV remake of Children of the Corn, which premieres on Syfy Saturday, September 26 at 9pm. Former Vietnam vet BURT's marriage to VICKY is on the rocks, but Burt hopes to rekindle their old flame with a second honeymoon driving trip. Unfortunately, their journey takes them into the heart of darkness -- a seemingly deserted rural community that conceals a grim secret among its rows of tall corn...

I'm actually genuinely curious about the Children of the Corn remake. I'm a pretty big fan of the original flick, as it's literally the first movie that I have a conscious memory of watching, but I'm fine if they want to tinker with the formula a little bit (and perhaps even go with the original short story's black-as-night ending). If nothing else, the fact that it's on SyFy guarantees that it won't be boring - when their stuff is bad, it's hilariously bad.

We don't get SyFy here in Canada, so I guess I'll have to wait until the DVD release to see it. I have to admit, though...I am intrigued by the possibilities.

I'm no pro by any stretch, but I did write a few in school. I'm currently working on one more to keep myself writing than for any other reason. What works for me is basically what guyofownage did. Write down a basic treatment and flesh it out scene by scene. Sometimes I also like to look at a professional script just so I can get the spacing and formatting right. (George Romero's original Day of the Dead script is conveniently available to download from homepageofthedead.com) Just write down, scene by scene, what you want to see happen. If you get stuck, try drawing it out in storyboards. The hardest part for me is to actually put it into script format with dialogue that isn't terrible. Everyone writes differently though. As long as you're working at it then your style will evolve. I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to be an expert. If anything, I feel your pain! What you do is pretty much exactly what I do word-for-word - nothing fancy, just a little 5-6 page summary that I crib from when actually writing the screenplay. In other news... So TR had a Friday night with nothing to do, no friends to spend time with, and no girlfriend to waste time/money on (and by waste time on, I, of course, mean getting laid and doing otherwise worthwhile stuff ;D)...so what better way to spend it than with a horror movie at the multiplex? I was hoping to see The Collector, which a few people on here had expressed some interest in, but lo and behold my local cinema only had The Orphan...and this movie. I'll admit that I wasn't looking forward to seeing this movie. The commercials made it seem like a movie in the vein of the "paint the human race as peace-hating nazis" ilk that I've come to despise over the years. Thankfully, District 9 is nowhere near that virulent when it comes to its beat-you-over-the-head message. In fact, the more somber warning/cautionary tale aspects of this particular movie are actually done in a pretty subtle way. In the end, however, I ended up not especially liking this film for different reasons entirely. Reasons that must make me a moron, because as of this writing this thing has a 9.1 rating on imdb.com. The movie begins firing on all cylinders, and the first 20 minutes or so of District 9 (which is produced by Kong-master Peter Jackson and directed by newcomer Neill Blomkamp, who looks to have a great future in the business) is admittedly pretty electrifying stuff. The year is 1982, and a mysterious spaceship appears over the city of Johannesberg, South Africa - only in a move that HAS to be much eerier than any stereotypical alien invasion that one would usually expect in a movie like this, the ship doesn't attack - it just sits there. And sits there, and sits there some more. Well, eventually, the Earthlings get tired of watching the ship just hover over their city, and the government of South Africa decides to raid the ship. Cutting the hull open, they find a rather large society of aliens inside. The aliens themselves are sort of insect-like in nature, speak in a language that the humans have come to understand (via subtitles for the audience), and become known to the humans as "prawns" due to their voracious, bottom-feeding nature. Not knowing what else to do with the 1.8 million aliens contained on the ship, they round them up into a camp and settle them into District 9 - a sort of "alien slum" where crime runs rampant. Only the citizens of South Africa aren't happy sharing their space with these weird "Prawns." They want their land back all to themselves, so it's up to a government team to raid the slum and move the entire race of beings to a concentration camp miles away from civilization. These opening chapters are largely told through the use of cinema verite, in a style not unlike a mockumentary. Through these sections we are introduced to the movie's main character, government agent Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley). While Wikus begins the movie as a government tool, of course you know that the character is going to have a change of heart by the movie's end. And as the crack squad of military operatives move in, shooting, beating, and otherwise ruthlessly oppressing the misunderstood "Prawns," District 9 turns into a good ol' forced attrition film, as Wikus comes into contact with some alien biotechnology that slowly begins turning him into an alien himself. And this is where District 9 starts to lose some of its luster, at least to yours truly. While the stuff explaining the background of the alien society on Earth and the shady government plot to relocate the otherworldly species had been very riveting stuff, the second half of the movie turns into what felt like, to me, just another overblown, overloud, and overbearing Michael Bay-esque action movie. The whole last hour of District 9 consists of what essentially is a nonstop series of action set pieces. Indeed, the action-packed second half of the movie feels so Bay-esque that at one point the main character, now fully an alien sympathizer, dons one of the alien robot suits that just so happens to look exactly like one of Bay's own Transformers. The things that I had feared most about District 9 - that it would attempt to ram into my skull with a "human race is scum" subtext so overt that it would wind up being straight up "text" (thank DSR for that line) - wound up being untrue. That aspect of the movie is actually done very well, and there are other decent, moral human beings within the movie besides Wikus. In addition to that, the two main aliens in the film - a smart, peaceful "Prawn" named Christopher and his young son - are actually very captivating characters, and basically steal every scene that they're in. Just like Gollum in Jackson's own latter Lord of the Rings films, these are wholly CGI-generated characters that somehow feel even MORE flesh and blood than the actual flesh and blood contained around them. With the exception of the two lead aliens, however, I found myself strangely apathetic toward the majority of District 9. There's a promising first act, intriguing, famly-driven portions during the second act, and then a third act that settles for being just another "explosion and shoot-out" action movie. Worth a rental, but sadly not recommended. ** Huh. Want to go see this myself, but your review has basically confirmed MY nagging suspicions about this film...one of the trailers I saw had nothing BUT those action scenes in it, and I wondered to myself how the hell they would end up reconciling THAT footage with the earlier, more subdued footage from the first trailer. I had feared it would be a "Jeckyll and Hyde" affair, with half the movie being very intense, character driven stuff that emptied into a "shoot up the alien scum" ending. Appears I was right.

More of a "shoot up the HUMAN scum" ending that it turns into there, Rorschach ;D. The government bad guys in this movie, however, are sufficiently douchy and dickish enough that you're genuinely rooting for Wikus as the movie goes along, though, so as mentioned in my review, that's definitely not the problem. Your suspicions are correct - when one watches this movie, Transformers-syndrome kicks in. "Oh, another explosion. Huh. *Yawn*."

With October almost here it makes me wonder how bad this years MonsterFest will be on AMC Yeah. You know, Halloween-time is my favorite time of the entire year. Everybody likes the day, but I look forward to it all year and take it to damn near psychotic levels. I've started Halloween threads in the past, but with the exception of DSR I don't think this particular bunch has heard much about it. To make a long story short, I'm a fanatic for the day. I generally carve out 3-4 jack-o-lanterns every year (and make 'em look GOOD, dammit, none of that "plain scary face" looking crap from me ;D), and have a genuine dynasty going when it comes to local costume contests. I've entered contests the past six years, and won every single one. I've had some good ones over the years, but I think my favorite was Blade from Puppet Master. That one got me a lot of kudos from the fellow horror fans I had at the time up at college. MonsterFest has indeed fallen off quite a bit from what it used to be; they still show the Hellraiser movies and the first ANOES, but past that they don't show a whole lot that I'm interested in anymore. I remember in 1999 or 2000 when they showed nothing but REALLY obscure monster movies. Now that was a fun watch. Nonetheless, I still watch the stupid thing every year for reasons that I've said before - there's movies in my DVD collection that I haven't dusted off in years, but if the same movie's on TV I'll watch just because it's comforting that there's other people out there watching the same dumb movie at the same time that I am. And now I'm feeling all Halloween-y again...damn, I wish it was October.

It's too bad Joe Bob Briggs doesn't have his show anymore I actually think that Spike TV would be a PERFECT fit for a revamped version of MonsterVision...because dammit, we need some kind of renewed horror marathon show that DOESN'T suck. And Joe Bob Briggs most assuredly didn't suck. He alone made my Saturday nights during middle school tolerable. ;D

Ahhhh, Spike....my first exposure to the Friday the 13th films back in the day. They were still called TNN and aired a marathon of the movies every Friday the 13th. Due to the fact that his stuff hasn't aired here in Canada, I'm not overly familiar with Joe Bob (blasphemy in the horror community, I know), but if it's horror-related and on Spike, I'm all for it.

Has anyone else here read the Comic series "Hack/Slash"?
If you haven't I recommend it, It's fun a hell plus it's cool to see the main character meet some Horror Icons.

Joe Bob = God. Know this probably isn't the best sampling, but it's my most memorable, as it lead off my favorite Halloween of all time - that long ago October 31st of 1998 when Halloween fell on a Saturday and I threw a big party (well, a big party consisting of me and three male nerd friends ) where we all stayed up and watched Joe Bob's Friday the 13th marathon all night. 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with Parts 1-6. Awesome stuff. From the slightly humorous episodes in the life of TR files... Well, it's Sunday, which means that in about five hours I have to be at work. To stave off sleep, I FINALLY broke into my "50 Horror Movie Classics" set that I bought about two threads ago. You'll also recall that I'm partially deaf, and thus usually have to watch all movies with subtitles on. Since this set is sufficiently crappy and doesn't contain subtitles, I'm presently watching Carnival of Souls with the volume maxed out and just barely making out what's being said on the insanely bad audio contained on the disc. Fun stuff. ;D

My hearing isn't the best anymore either after three years on an insanely loud aircraft carrier in the NAVY, so I can sympathize with ya there, TR....I hate it when films only have Spanish subs, or none at all.
