King was a master, even Bret (in his autobiography) said that he was the best heel in the company (around the time they were feuding). King could do it again tomorrow, if they were not telling him what to say and how to say it.

I liked him up until 2005 when he started routing for Cena, I know WWE only did that to try and get the fans to cheer Cena. He's unbearable now.
Although he became much more happier around 98 he was still entertaining as a heel character because of his squabbles with JR. At Wrestlemania 18 and 19 in particular he sounds like he's really pissing JR off with his comments. And if you can piss JR off that makes for great T.V.

He was one of the great heels. It's a pity they turned him face and at this point a heel turn would be difficult if not impossible since he's lost so much credibility. Illustrating children's books under his own name might have been the final nail.

Can anyone post the vid of Lawler cackling when a bunch of fans fell because they were trying to swarm Shawn Michaels? I think it was a payperview match but I'm not sure which one.

Back when I was young I used to absolutely hate the guy, but watching old stuff with him on since then made me realise he's just an awesome heel, I really wish he'd turn heel again now, god knows that would make RAW a little more bearable.

Ask and you shall receive, from International Incident 1996, the six-man tag main event where Shawn cleanly jobbed: www.wrestlinggonewrong.com/video/fans_break_guardrail.html

I'm seriously surprised that the entire crowd didn't rush that spot and f*** up the entire show by causing a riot.

I didn't get into WWF until mid-98, so I never really saw a lot of King besides his awful present self.
I do know, though, every time I play Legends of WrestleMania and hear the way he pronounces "Ross", I want to fly to Memphis and beat him with a DVD boxset of Friends.

I thought Lawler as we know him now came about after returning to replace Heyman.

Just saw this on youtube and was awestruck just what an asshole Jerry Lawler used to be. Come people who were here before 1999, let's reminisce about why Lawler got popular and then neutered in the first place. I wish he was 'neutered'. Pervert Lawler really ruined him in my opinion. By the way it was Road Dogg who said Puppies the first time. I think he wanted Debra to get naked, because WWE was classy like that. And he said something like 'show us those puppies'. And after that Lawler just kept going on about puppies and it became sadder and sadder. I guess this gif from The Wrestling Fan says it best. ![](http://www.thewrestlingfan.com/images/twfside10.gif)

You know, I hadn't thought of it before, but when Lawler really started getting toned down was when they put him with JR instead of Vince McMahon on commentary.
Ross always comes across as a relatively serious commentator trying to treat this as an actual sport, which left King playing his colorful counterpart (even back when he was still rooting for the heels), but Vince always played such a naive, dim-witted babyface commentator that Lawler made himself into a completely vicious, unsympathetic foil, and spent every RAW verbally ripping him apart.

OK, the promo was good, but WHY did they keep moving him around the screen like that? This is wrestling, not Max Headroom!

The whole pervert twist to his character was not a bad idea, but its just been carried to a ridiculous extent. I can remember back in the 90's when RAW was still young and Lawler had only just come on the scene in the WWF. Back then, they used to sometimes have "ring card girls" who would get up and hold up a placard with some sort of advertisement on it and strut around the ring with it. Lawler used to make pervy little comments about them. It fit well with his character as an obnoxious heel. And in the pre-attitude times, when the soon to be called diva's consisted mainly of Sable, Terri, and Sunny, he also played the dirty old pervert with them as well. But then as the attitude era ratcheted up the sex on television to a ridiculous degree, the perv side of his character got ratcheted up as well. At times it could be amusing-I laughed pretty good when Luna challenged Sable to a match where they would rip each others clothes off and he immediately said "I like it, lets do it!"-but now it has gotten just plain annoying. He could still get good face pops when he was still in heel mode because fan's were so used to him and fond of seeing him on television. Many respect his genuine achievements in the business, and for most he is simply a part of the WWE brand. Jesse and Bobby the Brain got the same treatment before him, because like Lawler, they were both clever and entertaining and connected with the crowd.
