I picked up Prom Night & Halloween 4/5 special divimax editions for $5 a piece the other day. Enjoyed Prom Night. Who doesn't love Jamie Lee anyway? Seen H4&5 a hundred times on AMC, never got to watch the unedited versions though. Probably gonna sit down & watch tomorrow.

*Hrrm* Went to Best Buy tonight. Looked at the horror section and saw that they're doing this thing called the "body bag edition" of certain FEARnet movies. Way to go. Put a crappy movie in a plastic bag and maybe some dumb schmuck will buy it for the "cool" packaging. For most of these films, at least the bag, with it's resemblance to those bags that dog walkers carry to dispose of canine indescretions, is appropriate.

R-Man, speaking of those bags, my friend bought the Body Bag Editions of Warlock 1 and 2 the other day. He brought them over so we can watch, then when he left I told him not to forget his bags. He said "You keep them". I said "If I keep them I'm throwing them away". He said "You keep them." lol
Also, to everyone, I got the new horror tournament match up on the board.

Those bags, while neat looking, made a MESS out of Best Buy's shelves. I can only image the clutter they'd cause on a bookshelf.

Now that.....that is just one of the worst promotional ideas I've ever seen. Just horrible.

I know. It was cool back when they did it as an evidence bag for the Edward Norton star making movie PRIMAL FEAR. This? This is HORRIBLE. How they thought that would sell copies of CRAPPY movies is beyond me. Heck, you put JAWS in one of those, and I wouldn't buy it. And I LOVE pretty much anything to do with that movie.

You throw this away." Those bags I thing are the equivalent to that. Heck they look like they don't even prevent freezer burn.

Yeah, my copy of Beyond Re-Animator was in one of those body bags. I hung onto the bag just in case but ended up tossing it a week later or so. It wasn't that bad when they had their own displays but now that they're just putting the leftovers on the regular shelf with the rest of the normal movies, they get stuck and it's impossible to take it off the shelf.

Ahhhh, Drive Thru. 3 times I've tried to watch that movie, and all 3 times it's been turned off in the first ten minutes.

Happy Friday the 13th, horror fans! For the superstitious, today is a day to lock your doors, go back to bed, and hide under the covers. For horror fans, however, today is a day to celebrate our favorite hockey-masked serial killer. Of course, if you don't know who I'm talking about, you're probably in the wrong thread.
I've always felt that a Friday the 13th in November is particularly special because we're less than 2 weeks removed from Halloween, and the ghoulish, macabre tones associated with that day haven't quite given way to the warm, cheerful tones of (American) Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's more or less our "last hurrah" for the year before we're hearing Christmas music 24/7 and enduring "It's A Wonderful Life" marathons from 90% of television stations.
While a full series marathon is now damn near impossible to do in one day, I encourage all of you to sit back and watch your favorite Friday the 13th film at some point today (I'll be watching Part 2, myself). Of course, any and all Friday the 13th-related discussion is encouraged as well ;D

Hey hey, Guy, I have to say it's good to see you in this thread again. I'm watching a movie right now (a non-Jason one) and was going to pop in for a couple little mini-reviews, and I can't BELIEVE that it didn't hit me that this indeed is Friday the 13th. I agree, as well - the November ones are always great for all the reasons you mentioned. Since I didn't put the two and two together on the day of the week + date, I hadn't planned on watching any Friday flicks today...but after I get back from the multiplex tonight The Final Chapter is definitely going to get a viewing. And what I was going to post originally... Well, this thread seems to be dying. So what's the best way to kill it deader than dead? TR's Asian Horror Theater! Wishing Stairs (Korea, 2003) - This movie has actually gotten a ton of praise in the places that I've looked, but for some reason Wishing Stairs failed to set my world on fire. The story concerns a group of young girls studying ballet at a boarding school. Of course, this being a horror movie, the girls are all selfish, jealous and conniving backstabbers - which lends itself to this movie's gimmick well. There's a legend about the creepy-looking stairs outside the school's main hall - count the number of steps on the way up, and an extra stair will appear. When it does, one wish will be granted. This movie works as kind of a variation of the "Monkey's Paw"/be careful what you wish for formula...but I felt the movie's final 30 minutes, which should have been a blitz of violence/forced attrition, were a letdown. ** out of ****. Kwaidan (Japan, 1964) - Considered one of the very finest Japanese horror films of all time, and for good reason - director Masaki Kobayashi definitely knows how to work the slow burn to perfection and paint masterpieces with the camera. Kwaidan is an anthology of four traditional (i.e. - set long before any of us were born) Japanese ghost stories, all of them containing a very basic human moral as its centerpiece. I also disagree with the majority of critics and think that the first two stories - "The Black Hair" ("Japanese girls with long black hair down their faces" complainers, I believe I FINALLY found the source of this trend that you may direct all your bitching at ) and "The Woman of the Snow" - are the strongest. The latter two segments are longer, with payoffs that aren't quite as creepy, but it matters little. There are some unforgettable visuals in this movie, astounding for a movie that's well over 40 years old. *** 1/2 out of ****.

Well, this thread seems to be dying. So what's the best way to kill it deader than dead? TR's Asian Horror Theater! Hey now...the horror threads never truly die. Reading back through the old threads, and the seemingly daily threat that the threads would sink into the ether, only to rise up from the grave for another scare in typical horror fashion has proven that. Hell, we're only a little over a month away from our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!! *blows into noisemaker* Anyway, I couldn't put 2 and 2 together either... ...so I didn't get to put in any movies about hockey masks and horny teenagers yesterday. SO, after work today (Saturday) I'm gonna throw in A New Beginning. As a F13 movie, it's not very good anyway, but its tremendous as a USA Up All Night movie, in my estimation. Also, some oldschool horror DVD news: TCM.com is pleased to present the UNIVERSAL CULT HORROR COLLECTION, featuring 5 of their less famous (though still worthwhile) horror pictures of the 30s and 40s. The collection includes House of Horrors, Murders in the Zoo, The Mad Doctor of Market Street, The Strange Case of Dr. RX, and...THE MAD GHOUL, which you can find my review of back in the earlier pages of this thread (and another review in one of the previous threads...I didn't realize I reviewed this flick twice). The whole set is priced at 49.99, which is admittedly pretty steep, but I believe these are those Burn On Demand DVD-Rs, like Warner Bros. has been releasing with much hoopla from obscure movie collectors. And the DVDs do have bonus features, usually stuff like lobby cards and behind-the-scenes stills. I don't have the money to pick this set up, myself, right now. I'm probably gonna throw it on my Christmas (dun dun dun!!) wish list.

Dammit, sorry to double post, but I read your reviews, TR. I tried to tape Kwaidan when it was on TCM (back when I had TCM...*grumbles angrily for a few minutes*), but the movie was actually too long for the tape I was using. Even though it is an anthology picture, I don't care to only watch half-to-three-quarters of any movie, so I just taped over it without ever watching what I had.
Just thought I'd share.

Even though it is an anthology picture, I don't care to only watch half-to-three-quarters of any movie, so I just taped over it without ever watching what I had. Just thought I'd share. Very weird thing about Kwaidan - I watched the first two segments (read: the ones that I felt were better) with the volume turned way down low, since I was trying to drift off to sleep. Then yesterday when I watched the final segments the regular way (well, regular for me, with the volume maxed out since my partially deaf ass can't hear a damn thing unless I do so) the whole experience lost its creepy vibe. Further proof that silence is scarier than any LOUD NOISE that Platinum Dunes can offer. Sucks that you didn't get to watch the movie. There's different cuts out there - the longest clocks in at just over three hours, while the Criterion DVD that I have is 164 minutes. Wouldn't happen to know which one TCM showed? I knew that the one-year anniversary of the horror threads had to be coming up. I remember starting the first one right around the time I started my current job, which was December 1st of last year. Hooray for one (almost) year of horror movie madness! One more Asian horror review... The Maid (Singapore, 2005) - Very hit-and-miss chiller that broke box office records in its homeland. This one concerns a young Filipino maid (Alexandra de Rossi, who is very good in the role) is hired by a seemingly nice family in Singapore. Her arrival coincides with the Chinese "7th Month," in which the gates of hell open and spirits must be appeased. Of course, the young maid breaks several of the rules in regards to keeping the angry spirits happy, and visions of ghosts begin haunting her day and night. In the end, however, The Maid winds up being very similar to the countless "BIG TWEEEST" movies of the early part of this decade, and while it's very strong with its execution in the first hour, it falls apart in the climax. ** 1/2 out of ****.

Damn! I knew yesterday was Friday the 13th, but forgot to watch a Jason film. I got sidetracked. I may watch one today or tomorrow to make up for it.
As for Toshio's comment about this thread dying, it most likely has to do with the Halloween aftermath. Like many others, I spent the month of October basically only watching horror movies. Once Halloween was over, I took a break (though I did squeeze about two or three more horror movies in).
Fear not, though. I still have Pigs sitting on my desk, waiting to be watched. And I have Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama coming in the mail today (along with The Whole Ten Yards, which isn't horror). So, I shall have another review or two coming shortly.

I almost watched a Friday the 13th movie, but got completely sidetracked. That's okay though because I've got Jason Takes Manhatten stuck in my head forever with it's teleporting Jason and weird chemical sewage age-wipe.
I've got Pumpkinhead on my DVR from a week ago and I'm looking forward to getting to see it again. Thanks for finally showing it IFC. Goodness knows it made perfect sense to not show it on Halloween since you already had the schedule filled with...Monty Python?!

I never post in this thread, I do read it a lot however, I just don't feel I'd be up to the caliber of posters in here.
This is just a notice for people from the UK who read this thread:
As part of it's 3D week next week Channel 4 is showing two 3D horror movies in Red/Blue 3D:
Flesh For Frankenstein on Wednesday Evening/Thursday Morning at 12:40am
And Friday The 13th Part 3 at 10PM on Friday.
You can get free 3D glasses at most Sainsburys.
Just thought I'd throw this out there for those with any intrest.
