Don't be fooled by hooks or beats, for they can at times disguise some sinister lyrics which fool some folks. Here are two classic examples.
"Getting Better" - The Beatles
Ah yes, things are better...all the time. Can't get no worse. Such a happy little number. A jingle used in many commercials and-
I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved Man I was mean but I'm changing my scene
....
I know McCartney wrote that diddle and all, but I'm sure Lennon added that verse.
"Every Breath You Take" - The Police
Most probably know this one by now, with even song-writer/singer Sting repeatedly irritated in interviews when people confuse this for a love song. Classic tempo, one of the most popular songs in the 1980s, even used in some weddings. So why does he get miffed?
Look at the lyrics again:
Every breath you take and every move you make Every bond you break Every step you take, I'll be watching you Every single day and every word you say Every game you play Every night you stay, I'll be watching you Oh can't you see you belong to me? How my poor heart aches with every step you take Every move you make and every vow you break Every smile you fake Every claim you stake, I'll be watching you Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace I dream at night I can only see your face I look around but it's you I can't replace I feel so cold and I long for your embrace I keep crying baby, baby please
OK. Oh sure its a love song. If you're a stalker, which was lyrical point which gets lost.

\ "Born In The Usa" as well. That's what I came in here to post. It staggers me that people don't know what that song is really about.

Sometimes it seems that the only people who got the proper meaning of "every breath you take" were the producers of "cat's eye" who used it in the "Quitters Inc." segment. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGUOszLwssw(start at 1:44)

Wiggle can confirm this or not, but wasn't Lennon the woman-beater of the Fab Four? Give peace a chance. *Slap*

I don't think I;ve ever heard of Lennon beating his wife.
He certainly treated Cynthia like shit and he and Yoko had their few year "lost weekend" but I've never heard he was an abuser.

I Will Always Love You gets played a lot - too much, IMO - at weddings and the like. It's really too bad it's a break-up song.

"Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People" get misinterpreted often.
So does "With or Without You".
Also, "Crash Into Me". Once you actually read what Dave wrote, that song's rather creepy.

The Beatles' "Revolution" is right up there with "Born in the USA" as far as mainstream misinterpretation. Too many people think it's supportive of the counter-culture and such, but it's obviously telling people to cool their heels and stop being radicals.

Green Day's "Good Riddance". I don't understand how a sarcastic song about leaving someone and saying how great things are now that they are out of your life can be played at funerals.

On a lesser scale, but one I find personally humorous as I know someone who used it as a love song, is Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You". I don't think she's ever realized that it's a song about a dominating male putting fear into a young woman.
