....and I'm quite nervous....especially since the guy doing it told me not to drink beforehand (I was planning on being drunk at the time to counter my fear of needles)
Any advice from those who've been there?

Don't get drunk. Drinking thins your blood you'll bleed like crazy. Tattoos aren't as bad as people make them out to be you'll be fine what are you getting?

Its not the pain I'm worried about, its a psychological thing....apparently my veins are hard to find, I've had so many nurses jam needles into nerves, hell even bone, trying to find a vein.....so I fear needles lol And I'm getting Godzilla on my right arm, from my shoulder down to my elbow.

Getting a tattoo is nothing like getting a shot lol.
But ya, you'll be fine. Make sure the guy you got it from is reputable. And ignore anyone who tells you about how bad it hurts...its different for everyone. The outline hurts more for some, others, its the coloring.
Also, if you're that sketchy about getting one, might I suggest a smaller one elsewhere before you commit to one that big.

Its actually a guy I know and am becoming friends with, he tattoos out of his home and his art is beyond incredible.

I've got a big problem with needles, but tattoos don't bother me.

I'm not a huge fan of needles, but I've gone under the tattoo needle 6 times and have 3 pieces of art to show for it. As far as what it feels like, it really depends on the artist. I've had some that have caused little twinges of pain, while others seem to have a gentler technique.
As far as being drunk, my first tatt (which is now covered up, as I didn't like having a big kanji symbol on my arm anymore) was done on Cinco De Mayo, and I was shitfaced. So I don't advise it, as you'll bleed more during the procedure and the ink has to set good. Same with taking a pain killer that thins the blood, I don't advise that either.
It's best to just face it. You don't really feel much at all, just a slight buzz. You feel it more when they're doing the outlines, as the color uses a different kind of needle. Hopefully you're blessed like I am and have great skin for taking in ink. I've had 3 different tattooists tell me that, and two of them have been featured before in Tattoo Magazine so they do good artwork.
Anyway, have a great time, man. And when the hell are you going to continue the nerd challenge? J/K. ;D

and will you be needing it back? Sorry couldn't resist due to the title. Well back on topic, according to my tattoo'd friends and peers, the shoulder area is one of the least painful spots to get it in but the whole bicep (not sure about the tricep) and elbow area is pretty painful.
But it's probably different for everybody and I don't have any tattoos and I'm repeating my friends stories. Good luck and remember, take pics and show it to the board once you're done.

The shoulder wasn't bad for me, but the back of the triceps can be a bit tender. But it's not too bad, just a little irritation.

1. Eat something an hour before hand.
2. Have a bottle of water nearby for easy hydration
3. Breathe normally
4. Keep in mind the pain is only temporary.
5. Eat something afterward

Next time you come over to my house, please show my mom your tattoo so she will be thoroughly horrified.

Eat something afterward And it wouldn't hurt to drink lots of water afterwards ... for several days. Helps keep the skin hydrated and helps the healing process, I think.
