Don't forget Forensics - Ducky. No one else but he and his assistants examine the corpses. Still, though, NCIS shows them to do a lot more of the cop action. As far as IT goes, that's where it's most ridiculous to me. The computer systems are as good as they are on CSI, able to access satellites and cell phones like they're ordering a happy meal. I think NCIS isn't nearly as bad as CSI, but it's still not realistic. As over the top as NCIS can occasionally be with the whole "finding a satelite or a cell phone", it makes more sense since they're a government agency and therefore would have far more access to those things than a local law enforcement agency. When McGee says he tracked a cell phone or got a satelite uplink, the leap is just "ok, the direcor of the federal agency called in help from a second agency, and things got done". When CSI does it, the question becomes "why did they get this major priority for what is just a local matter?". Which makes more sense than Horatio Caine calls up The Coast Guard and gets them to stop chasing his son ...

Yeah, that was always my line of thinking. Not only are they part of the federal alphabet soup, but they are also funded by and ultimately part of the frakking NAVY. They have all the short-cuts and end-arounds already worked into their network. Even if they work for the Navy, the leap is that "everyone in the Navy, if not the entire armed forces and FBI, will drop what they're doing to provide satellite images, surveillance cameras and cell phones to determine why a guy was shot outside a night club." And that's assuming that they don't state that they're actually hacking into them. That's not to say I think NCIS is bad as CSI. Star Trek's science sounds better than CSI's at times. And at least NCIS actually makes some nod to things like protocol. If you learn anything from CSI, it's that in Las Vegas, the Criminal Justice System is done entirely by people in a computer lab. Well, McGee flat out says that he hacks some systems, mainly the FBI. To be honest, however, I think he just has access to their own built in short cuts (perhaps due to Gibbs's friendship with Tobias). He never seems to be able to get the same access with CIA or Mossad systems.

Which makes more sense than Horatio Caine calls up The Coast Guard and gets them to stop chasing his son ... That is a specific matter, though. They go out of their way to demonstrate that Caine is obscenely well connected for a police lieutenant. I think the only thing that holds him down is the fact that he is only slightly better at making powerful friends than he is at making powerful enemies. That is rather surreal in my mind, but that is who they portray him as. Strangely, they never discuss whether he owns any businesses (or what they might be), but he clearly must because he has more means than a cop should have but does not appear to be corrupt in any way (outside of travelling outside of the country to murder his wife's killer rather than going through the proper channels).

Speaking of ridiculousness in crime shows, what about that holographic projector thing in Bones?

As long as you guys keep coming back to the show I don't think the producers care if their not entirely accurate.

eh, its a TV show. Its fiction. I don't really care if fiction is realistic. Its the beauty of fiction.
And honestly, how fun would a show that show that showed everything realistically be?

Well, CSI and ect don't have to be 100% realistic or anything, it's just when they randomly break out the Star Trek technology that people do a double take.

He never seems to be able to get the same access with CIA or Mossad systems. Since I've seen all the old episodes at least 5 times and I've watched the new episodes twice, McGee does a lot of hacking into various systems. Sure, some times it's amazingly fast, but other times it takes him and Abby quite some time to hack into certain systems. So it's not like they always do it at the drop of a hat. That being said, I can forgive NCIS for certain stretches of the implausible because the writing is just so damned good. ;D

As long as you guys keep coming back to the show I don't think the producers care if their not entirely accurate. I actually don't watch CSI much at all. I've seen a few episodes, but as it's so over the top I never enjoyed it. I love me some NCIS though, that show actually has a good writing staff. But as I'm not a Neilsen household, it doesn't matter anyways. And honestly, how fun would a show that show that showed everything realistically be? Well, half of Law and Order would consist of the DA staff reminding each other to go to Office Max and buy Post Its.

Shame part of this show is those who major in Forensic Science will be disappointed to know that this won't be like the show. My fiancée had never watched this show before she started her degree, and having watched it says that pretty much literally everything they do on it is wrong.

I'm still waiting for the CSI:Miami/NCIS crossover episode. You know, the one where Abby gives Calleigh a hot goth makeover, and then they spend the rest of the afternoon getting to know each other better. Oh wait, that's only in my imagination

Oh wait, that's only in my imagination I'm waiting for that episode, but for different reasons. I want to watch Leroy Jethro Gibbs go head to head with Horatio Caine and beat the shit out of him. Also, I'd like to see Abby beat the hell out of Calleigh for being ... well ... annoying.

I love when a cop show, and few do this, get the small details right. I remember watching an episode of NCIS and seeing them not only discussing fingerprinting but also actualy rolling a set. They got it right, down to the fact that the thumb is rolled in the opposite direction that the other fingers are. I was so giddy I actually yelled "Thank God, they got it right" a bit too loudly and scared my sister.

I also love that panel on the main computer terminal in the Miami Dade labe where you could just place a cell phone down on it, and it will start pilfering through all the numbers and pictures.
