My brain is racked trying to figure this out, personally. That kind of ending really takes a toll on you emotionally/mentally. I'm also kind of curious about the criminal case that results. Obviously this is Trinity's MO, and the bathtub murder was next on the list. But Rita has three kids, not two. Debra might notice this and wonder why Trinity went after Rita in the first place. This could lead to discovering the Dexter/Trinity relationship and lead her to uncovering some of her brother's darker secrets.

I had a theory but it got scratched by a later scene at the house. I was thinking of when Rita dropped off Dexter at the parking garage, but then there was a scene at the house later with Rita/Dexter, so...nevermind. My brain is racked trying to figure this out, personally. i'm thinking that Dexter was at Arthur's house at the same time Arthur was at Dexter's,but i can't remember the exact timeline of events so that may have been impossible

Man, that was one hell of an episode.
I am glad Debra and Dexter got to have their moment and all(even if in the back of my mind, I keep thinking "they are married"), but with Rita and all, that was a punch to the stomach. Poor kids.

Some season ending cliffhangers, you know what happened, you know what's going to happen, etc...then there's cliffhangers like this that's honestly a game changer. I believe that's what this was right here. And as far as Astor/Cody is concerned.... (spoiler tagging this for the people who haven't read the books...being safe) {Spoiler}Do you think the writers are going to start following the books once again and have Dexter start teaching the code to the kids?

I hope not. I think the hardest part about next season will be to see how they have the kids take it. This is going to be heartbreaking. Jeez.

I am glad Debra and Dexter got to have their moment and all(even if in the back of my mind, I keep thinking "they are married") Jennifer Carpenter had some terrific emotional displays this season, one of which was tonight. BTW, after just re-watching a bit of the episode, there was enough time for Arthur to kill Rita. From the time Dexter left his home (to go to Arthur's house) to the time he went to the autoshop, seems like it could've been a 2 hour period. That would give him enough time to kill her. I had completely blocked out the raid when trying to put together a timeline.

Whether or not she's repulsed by it is what will be the interesting part. Some love is unconditional, regardless of what they may be.

Anyways, even though there were a couple of flaws this season (didn't really care for the whole LaGuerta and Batista subplot one bit), this is the best season i've seen from the show since the very first one, so props to them. I really see an Emmy in the future for one John Lithgow. I thought he was outstanding. Definitely played one scary dude.

On the LaGuerta/Batista subplot, the previews mentioned: Was this basically that 45 second bit where they realize they're married and decide to live in her home? I assumed they weren't out of the woods yet in regards to their breach of ethics. It really was a boring subplot that seemed to only exist for the purpose of giving LaGuerta and Batista something to do. Other than that, everything about this season was just about perfect. No other complaints from me. John Lithgow was phenomenal, and miles better than Jimmy Smits was last year.

I think it was a good story and it was enough for what it was. This was all about Hall/Lithgow. I still cannot believe they did that tonight. I think this could be the end for Dexter. Ironic if he gets put in jail for the death of his wife and not for any of the murders he's committed over the years.

If nothing else, I really hope it gets Lithgow into more movies or show. Good god is that man a phenomenal actor.

@friskey
Your avatar is EXACTLY how I am right now. I just watched the finale...holy hell.
And here I was hoping the whole "Hey, let's take our honeymoon" was going to mean next season would be the Dexter By Design plot, which from what I've read so far (halfway done with the book) is PHENOMENAL.

Other than that, everything about this season was just about perfect. No other complaints from me. John Lithgow was phenomenal, and miles better than Jimmy Smits was last year. but Jimmy Smits got to do what he wanted, when he wanted, to whoever he wanted. COUNT ON IT! as far as tonights ending goes, i would have been surprised...had my f*****g brother who hates the show had not send me a god damn text message spoiling it! my family lives back in Memphis, i'm living on the west coast for work, so it airs a couple hours later here. as soon as the show ended there my mom called and asked if i saw it, and i told her no and that it doesn't air for a couple hours. so she said to call her as soon as i watched it. five minutes after i hang up, i get a text message from my brother asking if, since i've seen so many bootlegged movies still in theaters, if i had a copy of the new Twilight movie (i'm in a military and we go off on deployments for long times the only way we can see movies when they come out is if they're pirated, so pretty much everyone knows where to go to find them online). i wrote back no and asked him why, and he wrote back his friend wanted to see it. so i sent him a link to a certain website where he may or may not be able to watch it online, and got this message sent back: "btw, Rita dies. my friends finally got me into the show" needless to say, i was pissed.

Yeah, I couldn't contain myself and read spoilers before the finale, too. But still, it was a treat to watch and the ending really gets to you. It'll be a long wait for the next season.

It just struck me...I need to rewatch...seems like Arthur's, "It's already over," was not only a nod to what he'd told his victims but perhaps to Dexter as well. That got to me thinking about it.
Regardless of, I wasn't shocked as in "Holy crap!" like when Christine bit the bullet last week, that caught me off guard. This shocked me in a "I can't believe they just did that." kind of thing. I read the theories and saw the commericals on Showtime and pieced two and two that either Deb was gonna find out about Dexter's secret, or somebody HUGE (my guess was actually Rita, because of the whole "serial killer/single father disaster next season" would be interesting) was going to get offed. Turned out I was 3/4 right. Although (and this is my other flaw), I could've probably pieced it together that Rita was going to be the one anyways from the episode. It's just a typical cliche that i've seen on TV before. But it didn't detract my views on the episode and what happened. Like the ONST poster said, it got to me, it sticks with you. And that's why it's effective.

I've been meaning to get the Dexter books anyone know the order they should be read in? Darkly Dreaming Dexter Dearly Devoted Dexter Dexter In The Dark Dexter By Design That's the order they've been released. And the only one that will look familiar is Darkly Dreaming Dexter (except for one or two MAJOR plot points, it's the same as Season 1).

Are the books any good? Maybe that's something to get into.
