The most interesting part of the review to me is his analysis of Lucas and co. watching the first screening of the film. I'd never seen that footage before, but he's right that the expression on McCallum's face really does say it all. He knows the movie is s*** and he regrets not challenging some of Lucas' decisions when had the chance. I'd definitely recommend grabbing The Phantom Menace DVD. There's an exhaustive candid documentary that takes you from the day Lucas first started writing the script to the day of release. It's amazing in that you can see each and every misstep along the way (including Lucas picking Jake Lloyd over a really talented kid who would have been great in the role) and how the reactions of McCallum and the rest of the crew slowly go from exuberant to terrified. Hmm, I'll check it out if it ever shows up on youtube, but I'm definitely not going to buy the DVD of a movie that I hate. To me that would be like picking up the Batman and Robin DVD just to hear Schumacher's apology. It's just not worth it.

The ending of part 6 of the review is pretty awesome, talking about how the duels in the prequels are all flash and no substance, and then using Lucas' own words to make the point.
Great stuff.

finally sat down and watched it last night(wanted to watch it all at once), dang that was good. Kinda makes me sad though, because the reviewer's little half-schemed ideas already sounds like a way better movie than what we got.
Any word if he has plans of reviewing eps. II and III?

One thing that got me about Episode 1 was when people were complaining about Jar-Jar (being annoying) he said something along the lines of "oh well, the fans always get upset - I remember when Empire came out people were upset about Yoda..."
I saw Empire when it first came out in 80 and I never once heard anyone complain about him. Everyone loved him and were enthralled with him.
Lucas has a bit of twisted memory I think. He went on to say how these movies were always meant for kids but that isn't true either. He's very bad for revisionist history and no one around him seems to want to say "Hey George...."
I enjoyed the prequels for what they were, but they could have been so much better than what they were.

Exactly. He's George Lucas, and he can pretty much do what he wants(and before the prequels, who honestly would stop him?)

His reviews are all kinda part of an ongoing story arc, and since he left this one open ended I assume he's gonna keep going. Don't expect it for awhile though. It usually takes him a few months to put these together.

One thing I'll give Ep I credit was that the battle scene with the Gungans(or is it gungas?) and the battle droids, it matters if the gungas die. There a civilized race, with families. They're not manufactured battle droids who are programed for shooting and following orders and are not the personality type droid. Or the clones who are developed to be faceless and are also programed as to who they'll be loyal to.
When Obi-wan and that clone trooper appear to have a friendship but as soon as the clone troopers orders change, he has no problem shooting Obi-wan. Who cares in Ep II or III if any of them die? What's at stack if faceless beings are the only ones being destroyed?

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever met a 20 year old who thought Empire was the weakest film in the trilogy? I have: me.

Seriously? I could see not seeing it as the best ( though it's by far my favorite) but the weakest of the three? Diffstrokes.
This review was genius, and I agree with pretty much everything, particularly his take on the missed opportunity to have Obi-wan take much of the Qui-gon role. That one little twist to his arc woulda made even his character in the original trilogy have that much more pathos.

That one little twist to his arc woulda made even his character in the original trilogy have that much more pathos. Agreed(both on Empire being the best, and The Obi Wan stuff). I said it earlier, but RLM's little 'birdwalk' comments about things such as the Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon stuff already make a more appealing movie than what Episode I came to be. I really hope he does II as soon as possible. I actually think of II as the worst of the series(even though I is the only one I don't own, as I refuse to buy it). He can dedicate a whole 40 minutes just trying to explain everything wrong plot wise there.

Eh. Empire's just the one I forget about with the most ease. New Hope is the one I automatically think of when I read/see the words "Star Wars" while I have a soft-spot for Jedi due to the Ewoks and the final moments of Vader.
Not saying Empire is bad, mind you. It's just sorta... eclipsed by the one before and the one after, I guess.
