Kiefer Sutherland Before 2001, he was just some actor who had one known role (Lost Boys) and was mainly playing small parts and hanging on his father's name. Now he's Jack F'n Bauer. That's probably the best example.

Green Day, Mickey Rourke and Robert Downey jr are the ones I can think of at the top of my head.

If it was for music, I could name a ton. For actor, I can only think of Stallone. What did Neil PAtrick Harris do again? I only remember him in the Harold and Kumar films and I doubt this was a big comeback. Harold and Kumar was the start but "How I met your Mother" was the comeback. Pretty much that. Harold and Kumar made him into a sort of cult hero and then HIMYM brought him back into the limelight again, as well as voicing a bunch of TV and video game roles. He's also done a bunch of stuff on Broadway now, and even hosted the Tonys, which he was awesome as.

In the UK I think Take That's comeback has been excellent. They were always capable of writing good songs during their first run in the 90's (Pray, Back for Good, Never Forget) and since their comeback they've sung more great songs (Patience, Shine, Rule the World) and had the biggest grossing UK tour ever.

Not necessarily a career comeback but Chuck Norris had a huge comeback in popularity.
Count me in for Rourke, Downey Jr, NPH.

Not exactly a celebrity, but Seth Macfarlane, creator of Family Guy. It originally aired in '99, got pulled off the air a couple years later, but high DVD sales and re-runs on Cartoon Network and WGN got such good ratings that FOX brought the show back. Seth went on to create American Dad and The Cleveland Show, making him the highest-paid television writer, worth $100 million.

(and please dont turn this into a old vs new guns discussion)

Robert Downey Jr. is the biggest I can think of. His career was almost dead in the water, then he got a few opportunities with movies like Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, and then finally made his way back to the A-List with Iron Man. So glad he's back and sober.

Michael Jackson, although the circumstances were less than ideal.

Michael Jackson, although the circumstances were less than ideal. I still think there's a lotta hypocrisy in that as well. Not by actual fans mind you, but the deification of him after his death when like a week earlier he was still a punchline.

It's funny that at the start of the decade, Robbie was considered one of the biggest pop stars and they were considered the has-beens. Fast forward to now, and they're on top of the scene while Robbie's only starting to get his name back in the light after he hit the skids. Other notable comebacks? Alan Alda - One of my favourite actors. Best known for playing Hawkeye in MASH during the 70's and 80's. Came back into the mainstream this decade in 2004 when he joined The West Wing, which earned him the Best Actor Emmy in 2006. Also was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Aviator. Billy Ray Cyrus - One hit wonder in the 90's with Achy Breaky Heart, now father/manager of arguably the biggest pop act in the world and defying all preconceptions is a pretty decent comic actor.....well for a tweencom dad. MST3K Crew - In the form of Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic.

A late entry is Chevy Chase, thanks to Chuck (which also brought back scott bakula) and Community. Much better than whatever else he was doing this decade.

The Wrestler saved Mickey Rouke's career I'd say Sin City did first. Nosense, it was the Enrique Iglesias video, where he killed Enrique Iglesias.
