After seeing the thread about the RR Intro Videos from 90 - 92, I remembered an unintentionally funny moment from the 1991 Royal Rumble that always makes me chuckle.
A line delivered by Gorilla Monsoon on commentary which I believe wasn't meant to come across as funny at the time but the delivery of it was excellent.
Go to the 7:55 mark.
Saba Simba (Tony Atlas) comes busting through the curtains at 8:03 and gets into the ring at 8:11 before Gorilla finally shouts out "..................... SABA SIMBA!!!!" and then is backed by Piper who tries his best to put him over by just saying "Whoa oh oh!!"
Was Tony's run as Saba Simba that bad and unmemorable that Gorilla Monsoon and The Hotrod had no idea who he was when he came through the curtain?
I have a vision of Monsoon quickly scrolling through his notes for a name. My only theory to this is Simba was a last minute change in the Rumble so the commentary team had no idea he was gonna be entering, so it caught them off guard. But the fact Piper couldn't even throw a generic "oh this is a big old hoss!" or "he's a scary guy", you know just something to attempt to put him over as a threat sums up just how bad that gimmick was for poor Tony.
Always makes me laugh, that one. Speaking of which, what say you Tony....

The only thing I can think of is that Saba Simba had very little TV time (fact) and may have been used sparringly on house shows (guess) so that Gorilla may have forgotten what his new gimmick was called since he had debuted on TV nearly 4 months before this.

I remember on an episode of Superstars (I think) where Piper was on commentary and he went off on Saba Simba, saying that he was just "Tony Atlas". Really strange to hear that.
My favourite Gorilla Rumble commentary moment is from 1993 when he calls Carlos Colon a youngster, even though Colon was only about 10 years younger than Monsoon.

That was the first time I ever saw Carlos Colon (I was 7 or 8 at the time), and even I could tell that Colon was not a young man.

I can't remember when it was. But I remember Saba Simba coming out at some point and the announcer says "Saba Simba" Then Piper says "That's Tony Atlas"

I've got a tape somewhere of an episode of Superstars with Piper on commentary with McMahon. Saba Simba makes his way to the ring and McMahon mentions his name is Saba Simba. I remember the exact quote, because I was surprised he did it and McMahon let it air at the time.
Piper: "That ain't no Saba Simba, that's Tony Atlas! Who are you trying to fool?"
McMahon then explained that he went back to "his roots" and wants to be called Saba Simba now.

I still remember the monsoon/heenan quote about what saba simba means: Monsoon: It means seven lions Heenan: Nope. It means Room Service That goes to show why they were such and excellent pair. I'm suprised this exchange didn't end with Gorilla saying "Will you stop?"

I'm suprised this exchange didn't end with Gorilla saying "Will you stop?" I think all the commentators that came after Monsoon/Heenan should get in line and tell them................thanks for ****ing it up for the rest of us ;D There's NO WAY anyone is gonna give them a run for the money or live up to even half their chemistry. 1986-1992 is still my favorite period, it just doesn't get old in my book. Currently im into the 2004 season of ppv's that im going over and reviewing and one thing ive noticed is how JR and Lawler just half assed for most of the minor ppv's. Especially all the throwaway shows of 2003 and 2004 like the Unforgivens and No Mercies. Lawler is stale as day old bread and JR just talks like he doesn't want to be there. Monsoon and Heenan always gave it 110% And this was in the 80's!! I don't think they were even doing blow like everone else to enchance their work!!

I think you people are missing out on something much more important.
Wrestling Challenge
