The earliest I remember it was when he got into Scotty 2 Hotty's face during an episode of Smackdown. I'm almost certain it was before he joined the Alliance. Maybe during or after the Two-Man Power Trip tag team with HHH.

I thought "What?" was awesome at first, when Austin was the psychotic heel, but man did that get old fast after he turned face. I remember in 2002 thinking "Wow, the whole "What?" thing is still going. Lame"

Yeah as mentioned, Austin was on the phone to Christian and kept saying it to annoy him or something along those lines, there's a video floating round Youtube I believe explaining.

Are they still editing the sound out of the crowds at the shows? I have seen many shows in the past while where it seemed that the sound from the crowd was changed or cut off.

I was on a multi-year hiatus from wrestling after WCW folded... and then I start watching again around the time of ONS2, and I hear WHAT chants every where. It drives me insane.
Especially since WWE guys have a problem in delivering promo's much similar of that of former president G. W Bush during speeches. The unnecessary pause because I want a reaction from the crowd pause. It has only fueled the WHAT's.

At the time when the 'what' thing was first relevant when Steve Austin was saying it every week, it was amusing.
Nowadays though, the What chant is one of the few things in wrestling that I wish would disappear and go away forever.
