Maybe it's just me, but I've always thought Striker/Matthewsinanimate carbon rod/hunk of Silly Putty clicked much better on commentary together than Strikeranyone/Grisham. They just don't seem to compliment each other very well, and the banter feels forced. I don't buy Grisham as a wrestling announcer. In my opinion, there are only two kinds of people who can really work as wrestling commentators: a) larger-than-life personae b) straight-up sportscasters Who are the great announcers in wrestling history? Gorilla Monsoon Bobby "the Brain" Heenan Jesse "the Body" Ventura - a trio of wrestling people with larger-than-life personae. Their interplay with one another and the projection of their own personalities provided the in-ring product with another entertainment dynamic because of the announcers' ability to sell conflict, pain, and their own interactions. Gordon Solie Jim Ross - a pair of sportscasters who called it like they saw it. Their ability to do so further influenced the ability of the wrestling product to build accessible face/heel dynamics.

It just seems too canned. Like he sat around all week coming up with lame nicknames using aliteration and writing them on paper so he could toss them out during the matches. A good announcer should seem like he is talking about what he is seeing, not trying to throw in too many cute nicknames and references. He should also be prepared, and have plenty of ideas already in his head, or he just prattles on about "vintage" things and people taking shots "right to the skull!"

Striker is not a bad commentator, but I think he's getting carried away at times with his "background researches" and the nicknames that will never stick.

I also find him very annoying and his nicknames seem kind of forced.

When there's an announcing issue based on content or repetition, just remember that the announcer is being directed to a considerable extent by people like Vince backstage.

WOW, a month ago the man could do NO wrong. He's even putting Mickie James in the same lofty heights as Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson with the MJ moniker. Yeah, there's only ONE MJ - #23

I think the biggest travesty is that every week during R Truth's matches he has said that he "doesen't usually approve of the pagentry" and we haven't had one photoshop contest yet!
I mean its not hard just getting a dissapproving looking Matt Striker and shopping it into a pageant photo! we can do it people!

I think Stiker's commentary was well suited for ECW. He had a lot of cool, insider references and was a smart commentator. But on Smackdown he's getting obnoxious. The lame made up nicknames for stars. Calling Ziggler the Blond Braggart? Jericho the Mental Mastermind? Calling Undertaker the Dark Terminator, the Minister of the Night, the Last Outlaw? This is where I lost it. I know commentators in the past have coined names like the Cerebral Assasin, the Excellence of Execution, etc. But Striker's seem so forced and lame. Agree/disagree? He should quit focusing on that crap and focus on being a heel. Oh wait, heel announcers aren't allowed in WWE anymore. Why make the product interesting or anything.

True, but I find a heel and face arguing and providing opposing viewpoints much more entertaining than a team like Cold and the King constantly agreeing on EVERYTHING and being boring shills for two hours. I mean, most of the time in WCW the commentators were all faces or very close to it but they still disagreed with each other on stuff or provided different insights rather than being two parrots. So a heel and face mix isn't needed, but I think it helps in some cases. It just depends. As far as Striker goes, I haven't seen him since he left ECW but he was fine there. His multiple nicknames and such is part of his gimmick. I personally find him a lot more entertaining and less annoying than any other WWE commentator outside of JR...not that there is any competition in that area right now. At least he isn't saying idiotic crap like VINTAGE BRAGGING RIGHTS! when the PPV is about an hour old.

In the announcing booth it does. Hearing two face announcers kiss the face's ass and whine about the heel all day is about as repetitive and boring as it gets. If the announcers are talented, hearing them bicker can make a match nobody cares about extremely entertaining. There's a reason announcing was far better when Ventura and Heenan were in the booth.

Sometimes he can be a bit irritating, but at the same time, he gets major brownie points for calling Chris Jericho "Lionheart" on ECW a few weeks ago.

I believe Striker is the best announcer they have right now. JR isn't as good as he was, and maybe that can't happen right now. So you've got Striker. Who has a gimmick, one that can be annoying but is better than Cole or Grisham. Ideally if Striker was paired with say... JR, or if JBL could be coaxed out of retirement it would work better.
But given what we have right now, he is the best, and at the very least he does his damnedest to put over both people in the ring, while trying to conform to the entertainment schtick Vince pushes.

If the announcers are talented, hearing them bicker can make a match nobody cares about extremely entertaining. There's a reason announcing was far better when Ventura and Heenan were in the booth. I agree, I loved that formula and it really added to matches. However I never had a problem with two unbiased announcers either like JR and Grisham were for Smackdown. But if you have one extreme you have to have the other. As far as the two face announcers go, which would be Cole and Lawler it is just ridiculous. If the faces cheat it's fine, but the heels are horrible no matter what they do. It's like the radio broadcast for a certain sports team where they have the obvious bias for their team but doing it on a Sunday Night Football game. I think alot of people like Stryker because he is the closest thing the WWE has to a heel announcer without actually being one, he just likes certain heels and justifies their characters at points. I also like how he describes how certain moves are effective, puts over alot of the talent, and I even enjoy his stories even if they are made up, I think he atleast tries to deliver the product as legitimate.
