I heard a crazy news story as I was listening to NPR on the way home from work today. Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only man to have survived BOTH the bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, died Monday due to stomach cancer. The story can be read HERE but the NPR story I listened to today went into further detail. An author who had interviewed Yamaguchi and other survivors of atomic bombings recalled his story on the air. Apparently after having been blown away from the blast in Hiroshima, Yamaguchi suffered severe burns but instead of seeking immediate help, he hopped aboard a train to Nagasaki so that he could return home to his family. But to get to that train, he had to cross a river that did not have a bridge and did so by using the dead bodies that were floating in it. Once he got back to Nagasaki, he had tried to convince his co-workers about what happened but they refused to believe that anything like what he had described could happen. Suddenly, the atomic bomb was dropped in Nagasaki and somehow the office he was in was some sort of "blast cocoon". While the people in this particular office remained alive, everyone else in the surrounding offices (about 300 people) were killed. For a man to live through all of that is just something I can't even begin to imagine.

Jeez. Let this be a lesson to everyone: Remember when you're emoing about the crappy run of luck you've been having, someone's always got it worse.
Two A-Bombs? Crossing a corpse river? This guy wins.

I cannot believe he lived to be 93 after all that.

Dang, there isn't much you can say to a story like that. He did live a noble life after the events, campaigning heavily against such things happening again, so a very sad loss.

RIP. Incredible. Great to hear that he was able to do some good after surviving such horrors.

Man, all those critical success rolls and then he scores stomach cancer at the end? I would've assumed that he would've gone out like Brad Pitt's character from Legend of the Fall fighting a grizzly bear or something and then being carted to the afterlife by a flock of unicorns.
Then again I suppose to a guy that tough it probably only felt like mild indigestion would feel to mere peons such as ourselves.

The dude was blown to Kingdom Come TWICE and lived to the age of 93.
I gotta say.....I don't think the dude is a normal human. I think he was an Immortal, and "stomach cancer" was what was written to cover up the fact that he lost his head in a duel.
All kidding aside, the dude saw death and destruction on a massive scale twice. Plus, he HAD to be in extreme pain during those days. He suffered severe burns and then crossed a river filled with corpses. He had to get an infection of some kind with all his burns. He lived a long fulfilled life, and he got to die with honor.

And people complained that the 'Nuking the Fridge' scene in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was unrealistic.
On a serious matter, that's pretty insane. R.I.P. to an awesome man.

Well to be fair, he only survived those 2 A-bombs because he was able to shield himself behind his massive balls.

The word "epic" gets thrown around a lot, but that is one epic lifetime. I know he didn't die in battle, but that's gotta be a free pass into Valhalla.

Tsutonu Yamaguchi could make Chuck Norris tap out.
ON a more serious note:
I'm going to say I'm actually shocked there hasn't been a major movie made about this guy.

Think I read that James Cameron had been in talks with the guy for years no trying to get the rights. As to the story, I'm wlling to bet his kids never got to complain about anything ever since it'd always get met with "Yeah? I as in atomic blast! Twice!"

I came I saw I got blowed up....
TWICE....
BY AN F'N A BOMB.
In all serious though RIP to a great man. After the war he became quite the peace activist, and even more amazingly he never held a grudge against the US. In fact right after the war he worked very closely with the US to help heal relations between America and Japan.

Well, the Valkyries were already calling for him after the first blast. He gave them the middle finger and went on living. He gave two middle fingers after the second blast. Seriously and honestly, RIP to him.
