There are a lot of contenders by my vote goes to...
THE DEATH OF MICHAEL JACKSON.
Yes people, that's right. MJ's death is was the BIGGEST story of the decade IMO.
I think this outweighs 9/11 simply because of the media coverage. When as many people die as did on 9/11, you expect nonstop media coverage, but when ONE man dies and all the 24 hour news stations are covering his death, it's something special.
The man changed music and challenged the status quo. Thus, the death of Michael Jackson was the BIGGEST news story of 2000-2009.

No, it's 9/11.
Here's how big 9/11 was........the PORN channels switched to news coverage.
Michael Jackson's death was the most over hyped media shitstorm of the decade and totally undeserving of the attention it received.
Tiger Woods cheating on his wife is a close second.

9/11 and 7/7. Death of the Pope 2008 US Presidential Election Not to sound insensitive, but 7/7 is..............? The terrorist bombings in London. It's September 11, easily. Nothing even comes close. It still has an impact to this day. You've got the War on Terror, and the War in Afghanistan which are direct results from September 11. Not to mention, the new security measures for airplanes. It led to the Department of Homeland Security.

9/11 no doubt. That was the most surreal event of my 31 year old lifetime.

I mean, okay, you can justify by saying that he was only ten on 9/11, but I was only like eleven at the time and I've been fully aware and conscious of the fact that 9/11 was easily the biggest news story of the last decade. His post was completely ignorant too, by saying that "when as many people die as did on 9/11, you expect nonstop media coverage..." Um, THERE WAS. Eight years later, there were people complaining that Obama wasn't at Ground Zero on the anniversary of it last year. Michael Jackson's death was big, but merely comparable to the deaths of Lennon, Elvis, whatever. It just becomes a part of history which has little or no societal impact. We're living in the world we are now, and a significant part of it is due to 9/11. Just stop already.

Yeah, I was TEN when 9/11 happened, big whoop. That doesn't mean that I don't understand the gravity of it. I just personally think that for ONE MAN to get nearly the media coverage of THOUSANDS is astounding.

I've dissected your words carefully and you've already reneged on what you've said previously. Thank you.

I've dissected your words carefully and you've already reneged on what you've said previously. Thank you. How? In my OP I NEVER said 9/11 wasn't a big deal and I even said, and I quote, "When as many people die as did on 9/11, you expect nonstop media coverage, but when ONE man dies and all the 24 hour news stations are covering his death, it's something special." which comes right back to my point in my last post. Honestly, if you came in this thread to be a jerk over the opinion of another person, leave.

Erm... you think that Michael Jackson's death was a bigger story than 9/11. It doesn't even come down to subjectivity. 9/11 was just bigger, end of story. Nobody even cares about Michael Jackson's death anymore. Not only that, but his death was an inevitability, whether it happened how it did or thirty years from now. I MEAN, CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT A MYSTERIOUS AND ODD CELEBRITY MUSICIAN RIDDLED WITH CONTROVERSY WHO TURNED HIMSELF INTO A FREAK WITH PLASTIC SURGERY AND HAD A THEME PARK IN HIS BACKYARD OVERDOSED ON DRUGS!?!?!?
Also, I'm not a jerk because I disagree with you.

Just going to play Devil's Advocate here. While I agree with you 100% that 9/11 > Michael Jackson, I do have to say a post like that makes you look like a jerk in a way. Just saying.

Well maybe so, but I'm easily the lesser of two evils.
I'm not going to argue with Squidbeard anymore, not only because he's just wrong, but because he's incorrect in thinking that what he's saying is an opinion. It's not, he's just wrong.

Jackson's death spawned about a two months of media coverage...a s***ty movie and a show starring the Jackson 4.
9/11 spawned 6 plus months of media coverage...The War on Terror, Department of Homeland Security, PATRIOT Act, Knocking the Taliban out of power in Afghanistan essentially freeing millions of people, knocking Saddam Hussein out of power essentially...well, that's a debate for a different board. Etc...
To say that Michael Jackson's death is at all comparable to the people who died because the attacks on 9/11, 7/7, the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is just down right silly...no offense to you or your opinion...but holy s***.
