We need to appreciate this awesome but sadly underappreciated series. And what better way than with this awesome piece of fanart that I found of Gadget and Meg.

Agreed. The Suikoden series deserves much more appreciation than it gets presently. Really all of the games are quite good in my opinion, excluding four which isn't really the fault of the story. Rather the fault of the constant random encounters and the frustrating travel via boat.

Rather the fault of the constant random encounters and the frustrating travel via boat. Agreed. Suikoden 4 isn't a bad game exactly but the execution of it was botched. I don't think I even used the boat once I recruited Viki unless I had to activate an event flag outside the island. The 4 man party mechanic blew also. You couldn't even assign a formation and characters didn't have proper range stuff except for the battle outside of middleport.

I love them all including 4. I also feel that 3 is very underrated, and should be up there with 2 among the best RPGs of all time.

3 really gets shit it doesn't deserve.
I actually bought Suikoden 1 the day it came out, for no other reason than it was an RPG. I adore that game. I never got 2 or 4.
The only game I don't really like in the series is Tactics, but it didn't have a chance when I was used to Advanced Wars and Fire Emblem.

I found the first one at a Gamestop about 8 years ago for 15 bucks. Never have found the second one for less than like 100 bucks. Freakin Ebayers. This is why I keep my PS2 around.

I got Suikoden off of the playstation network. I got my ass kicked by the first monster formation I saw on the world map.
Are they the types of games where you pretty much need a guide?

A recruitment guide is suggested if you haven't played one yet. A guide is recommended when doing the Clive subquest in 2. I'm still yet to nail that one yet.

I never used a guide for it. Just trial and error.

Suikoden III is the greatest non-Final Fantasy RPG of all-time.

One thing about Suikoden is that you gotta read the dialog or you'll miss everything. In a normal game your first battles in Suikoden 1 won't be on the world map they will be on Magician's Island. To get there you will need to go left after leaving the castle after your talk with Kraze. There will be a dragon knight named Futch standing there waiting to take you. Now if you really want to there is a trick that will net you a prosperity rune early if you travel to the town of Sarady with just you and Ted in the party at the very beginning of the game.

I was actually thinking of making a Suikoden thread the other day. I just bought 4 a week or two ago, and have 5 bought and ready to play when I finish it.
Without spoiling it, 4 had a pretty funny reveal about the true nature of one of the characters. ("MY ARM!!!!") Also, one of the secret characters was a surprise to me. Pretty neat, though.
The first one was one of the first Playstation RPGs I got. I never played 2 or 3, sadly.

2 is the best, and then 5, 3 and 1 is a tossup, and 4 largely sucks. strangely, 4 was the first one I played. any word on a sixth yet?

2 is by far my favourite. Never played 3, since I'm in Europe and we all know what happened to it getting here.
Got around to pick up 1 a few years ago and bought 4, Tactics and 5 when they came out. Since my expectatives were low though to comments I've read about it, I enjoyed 4, but those constant random battles were a big bore.
Mostly, to just play the game, one just needs to read the dialogs and play the game, since it's not really difficult (you only have to get some buffing in a couple of circunstancies before a big boss) and pretty straightfoward. If you want all the 108 characters, however, you will need a guide. Especially for 4, as even though the characters will join almost for the heck of it, some of them are really well hidden/have some trick to trigger their appearence (the 2 most important ones, for example).

4 did have a ton of random battles, true. I highly recommend a Slash orb so that you can instantly kill weak monsters.

To this day, I would say that Suikoden II is my all time favorite game. It had a great battle system, a engaging and lengthy story, awesome characters & of course... cooking battles.

Shame it's rare as hell if I recall correctly. If you look on eBay, there's usually a few auctions for it going on, it's just they're almost guaranteed to go over $100.
