After "exhaustive" research, I have discovered that only once in the almost 26-year history of WrestleMania has someone who held either the WWE Championship or the World Championship in December not been on the card, and in a prominant position, at WrestleMania.
That one exception was Batista at Mania 22 due to injury.

I thought this was going to be a link to the NEWZ that the E is thinking of doing Trips/Sheamus for the title at Mania

He's going to Wrestlemania alright.
Look out Money in the Bank, there's a new, pale contender for you.

My bet is Sheamus vs Rey as the obligatory Raw vs Smackdown match.

My bet is Sheamus vs Kane as the obligatory Raw vs Smackdown match. Battle of the pale monsters.

My bet is Sheamus vs Rey as the obligatory Raw vs Smackdown match. I'd rather they form the tag team of Sheamysterio.

Well, there's a first (real) time for everything.

Not surprising at all. In fact, it would have been surprising had it been the other way round, with Wrestlemania not including a world champion from just 4 months back on the card even when available.

Was it really that exhausting? I stayed up all day and night figuring it out. I just slept for 17 hours to make up for it.
