This is somewhat inspired by the thread of the brand split. I was wondering if anybody thinks that more midcarders should have title matches without having a main event push. For example X-Pac once wrestled Bret Hart for the WWE Title or Hardcore Holly wrestling JBL for the title.
I think that wrestling sports entertainment should be treated more as a sport. A wrestler wins despite how over he is with the crowd and has a shot at the title on tv and the wrestler that is over with the crowd should get the PPV match for the title and or feud with the champion.
Maybe my problem is is that I like Japanese wrestling too much and I am getting tired of WWE. However, rarely a wrestler getting a main event push will wrestle a midcarder anymore. On tv I think this should happen more often so we can see more new matches. When HHH is a singles wrestler, how often do you see him wrestling a midcarder? Now does not count because he is in a tag team and not supposed to be in the title picture for a while.
You thoughts?

I think the main problem at the moment is the way there's such a steep divide between the midcard and the main-event scene. While we do get occasional stuff like this current Kofi / Orton feud, it seems the usual affair is that guys like Miz can beat anyone in the midcard on a given night yet has only had one match with Cena where he got in any real offense.

I think that both the concepts of "Automatic Title Rematch" and "#1 Contendership" have killed off all sense of variety in wrestling.
When it's a given that the best booked person is going to get a world title shot, it's really hard to get behind midcarders who you know won't pull out too many significant wins.

What! Are you saying you dont wanna see such classics as John Cena vs. Orton 200, or Cena vs. Kurt Angle 200, or even better, HHH vs Randy Orton 200. How about John Cena vs. the same main eventers over and over.

Maybe it's because they don't want to waste a main event on an extremely predictable world title match.

I was just thinking of this the other day, I miss when you would see main events like Undertaker vs. Faarooq for the title at KOTR 97, the kind of match where you were pretty sure the champ was going to retain but there was some chance that this midcard guy could actually win. I guess Sheamus vs. Cena can be seen as something kind of like that but other than that it hasn't happened much lately.

Yeah I don't get why they don't do that anymore. Heck, I don't see why you can't give Kofi a title shot at this point, he is certainly over enough. No wonder the WWE PPVs have been down lately, you will get to see a rematch of the main event in 2 weeks on Raw. If they actually gave midcarders title shots they could actually save the big matches for the ppvs. As far as HHH vs midcarders, now that he is a tag champion we will see that more, heck Smackdown's main event last week was DX vs the Hart Dynasty, which was a great match.

At this point, it's rather pointless.
Back in the day, I really believed Bret might lose to anyone they stuck him in the ring with, now if they had Cena vs. Carlito for the title, I would know exactly who was walking out as champion.
I get why it's good and why it should come back, but the times so different now, not sure it would work.

Seems funny that we're talking about this, when Sheamus just won the title in a nothing, throw away match.
