Waspinator, sadly, seems to be a bit more unrecognized by society at large. That's 'cause the universe hates Waspinator.

"Transformers" is a household name, definitely.
Opitmus Prime and Megatron might be. It was big with the 80s generation of course, and with the Michael Bay cash cows, it would have to be at least somewhat recognizable to many. Prime is more likely than Megatron, perhaps.

If freakin' Judas Priest can namedrop Megatron, as they did in the song Hellrider, then yes, I'd say they are household names. This was before the movies, BTW.

Soundwave seem to be more of an equal to Prime as far as iconic status than Megatron does. Even if people can't remember the name, they probably do remember the tape deck with the cool voice.
Oh, and the Mandarin dub of G1 has Soundwave singing all of his lines, so he gets bonus points for that.
