Every year, the Library of Congress selects a group of films (and not necessarily just movies) to be preserved that they deem essential to the national cultural heritage.
For 2009, or two days ago, they picked 25 deemed "worth saving," and the notables are:
Thriller (1982) - Iconic Michael Jackson music video, from director John Landis.
The Muppet Movie (1979) - When aliens hundreds of years from now come to Earth after we either nuke each other or died from a giant plague, they'll learn that being Green wasn't easy.
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) - Classic Sergio Leone western. Not as popular as say Leone's movies with Clint Eastwood, but still worth seeing.

Dog Day Afternoon is on that list.
And that's all that matters.

I'm suprised Thriller wasn't included ages ago. To say its iconic is an understatment and its the first music video to be included. The man still keeps notching up new records and acheivements!

I'm not sure. I don't know if I would put Thriller in there, being it's a music video and not really a film, to be exa.....
*Starts hearing eerie music, then turns around.*
Seriously, though, I'm happy one of Michael's greatest works is being preserved. Hopefully Smooth Criminal works its way in there as well.

Same with Billie Jean and Black or White. The problem is I'm not sure any of theme were actually released to theaters where Thriller was, hence it's inclusion.
Funny how I spent the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010 with MJ. Dunno why, but was listening to his music as the clock turned over past midnight and then just watched his concert in Romania because I couldn't sleep. Amazing stuff, especially on HD.

It was on BBC2 the other day. Its just amazing watching it, you just cant take your eyes off him. And Kenny Ortega's story about what happened earlier in that day before the concert really touched my heart.

And Kenny Ortega's story about what happened earlier in that day before the concert really touched my heart. It's not just that, but you can tell that he's happy, honest to God happy up there performing and reacting to the crowd and having them react to him. Although I still question the wisdom of bringing a girl up on stage to meet him. Michael was nearly pulled to the ground by that chick and could have been hurt. Still, given his own level of innocence, he had to trust nobody was going to hurt him. By the by, I did hear they will FINALLY be asking a grand jury to bring charges against Dr. Murry. 2nd degree murder. This being the LAPD, my confidence is low given they haven't gotten anyone since Manson. As to Ortega's story, I assume you were talking about what happened at the hospital earlier. My DVD copy came with the Ultimate Jackson Collection (Christmas present, it rocks) and doesn't have the story. But man, the man was generous to a fault. Know what's really sad? Any time a Jackson thread comes up, I know I'm going to come post and just gush for about a paragraph.
