I'm gonna have to be one of those bandwagoners and say that I found Paranormal Activity scary in certain parts, Ken. Before that, Marebito f***ed me up in ten different ways. But then again, I found these certain movies scary due to things in my own life - Paranormal Activity because of my own experience with a haunting, and Marebito because I was intimate with the writings of Richard Sharpe Shaver (which is truly some scary stuff) before seeing it, which the movie uses as a launching pad for its weirdness.
To answer your other question, yes, I watch horror movies because I enjoy being scared. It doesn't happen often anymore, but when it does I love it. It's why horror movies came about in the first place - people enjoy being scared, because it makes you feel alive.

It's why horror movies came about in the first place - people enjoy being scared, because it makes you feel alive. I'll co-sign this. And add that, even though horror films don't really scare me anymore, I can appreciate their ability to engulf me in an intense or creepy atmosphere. Also, a page back, someone mentioned that Clint Howard would make a good induction to the HOF, and I'll co-sign that as well. His role in Ice Cream Man was a lot of mischievous fun, Evilspeak is an underrated gem. He also plays a mental patient in a film called Disturbed, starring Malcolm MacDowell (another fantastic character actor). I haven't seen the movie in a while, but I may watch it and give it a review one of these days. Still, though. Clint Howard. *thumbs up* ;D

In an interview with Demon FM, writer Patrick Melton answered one of the longest standing questions in the SAW universe.
He Confirmed that in part VII that Dr. Gordon's fate will be answered... and some clues have already been given onscreen about said fate. "The goal is to have all loose ends resolved by the end... including the Gordon mystery."

When the law of diminishing returns relegates SAW to direct to video bins and the $5 clunker bin at Wal Mart? I liked SAW VI well enough, but damn...even though I did like it, it didn't make me want another movie.

I would have been happy with the series ending at VI to be honest and I know rightly each new installment from here on in runs the risk of ruining the series. Hell V nearly did!

ORGY OF THE DEAD (1965) - Not so much a film I've watched (in the most accepted definition of watching a film), I felt the need to give this picture a shout-out, anyway. The story, such as it is, concerns a mid-30s-looking man and his girlfriend, driving out to a cemetery so the man (who is an author) can find inspiration for a horror story. Following the couple's car crash, they stumble upon that cemetery, where they are captured by a werewolf and a mummy, and forced to watch a string of stripteases performed by the spirits of the recently deceased, as Criswell (apparently the Emperor of the Night, and something of a gatekeeper between the worlds of the living and dead) watches on in delight. This wasn't directed by Ed Wood, but he did write it (based on a novel he wrote), and took on many roles behind the camera. And yeah, his influence shows, as the dialogue is his typical campy style. But the main purpose of this movie is simply to ogle topless women. So why am I bothering with this, when we've got the internet, and pretty much all the topless women we want a mouseclick away? Well, this is my favorite movie to fall asleep to. The music is a lovely smooth jazz, generally, and the corniness prevents any sense of dread from ever showing up. Beyond that, it just feels like you got together with some buddies of yours (who happen to be monsters), to crack lame-ass jokes and lear at women in various states of undress. I can't honestly rate this movie, but again, its a great motion picture to fall asleep to (or even wake up to), and so I just felt like giving it a little kudos for that. *shrug*

Matt Cordell (Robert Z'Dar) is back to wreak havoc on Times Square. This time, Det. Sean McKinney (Robert Davi) and Susan Riley (Claudia Christian) are his targets, as they set out to reveal the truth behind the stripper murders. Along the way, Cordell meets up with Steven Turkell (Leo Rossi), a fellow serial killer, and they join forces to take out their foes. Just like the original, Maniac Cop 2 is a lot of fun. William Lustig provides a great mix of action (car chases, explosions) and slasher techniques (bloody murders, nudity), giving the loyal fans something to slobber over. Not all of the kills, however, are shown. Just like many slashers, quite a few are shrouded in darkness, leaving it up to the audience's imagination (which isn't always a bad thing). Lustig does repay us for this, by giving us a great scene near the end. I won't ruin it, but I will say this: The Human Torch would be proud (except for the fact that a villain is portraying the act, but that's besides the point). I do have one big bone to pick with the film. It presents itself twice in the film. The first time is in the beginning. Instead of starting with a new opening, Lustig opts to show the ending of the original instead. This is great for those who haven't seen the original. But, it's bothersome for those who have. This isn't the only time this occurs. When Turkell is trying to get Cordell to reveal his past, the same flashback of him being in the prison that was shown in the first is played here as well. Once again, this is fine for those who haven't seen the original, but it's a pain to those who have. In all honesty, flashbacks and clips from the first shouldn't transpire in sequels. The majority of the crowd has seen the original, and they don't need a reminder of what took place in the first. As for the minority who haven't seen the original, that's their fault. Either watch the original before seeing the sequel or ask somebody who has seen the original what happened. MC2 does feel a bit rushed. The ending comes too quickly. Thankfully, the ending itself isn't rushed. Not only do you get that great scene I mentioned earlier (still not spoiling it). But, you also get a nice conclusion that wraps everything up into a nice little bow, while still leaving an opening for another sequel (which was made). It may have its problems, but, just like the original, Maniac Cop 2 is a lot of fun. Final Rating: 70%

For the record, my favorite horror movie falling asleep whore is, was, and probably will forever be the Crystal Lake to Manhattan box set, which is a big reason why that much-maligned set is pretty much my best friend. Two movies per disc = not having to get up to switch movies = awesome sleep on at least an every-other-daily basis.

I can't ever fall asleep when there are nude women on my TV screen. Something just won't let me do it. One reason why PERVERT! is a movie that keeps me up awake when I watch it is thanks to the twin talents of the lovely Mary Carey, who bears a passing resemblance to ECW's Tiffany.
That film is probably the closest thing we're gonna get to an actual Russ Meyer film anymore.

I like Troma movies. They may be outlandish, weird and freaky, but that's all in the appeal. They don't aim to be cinematic classics, opting instead to entertain the audience with trashy horror movies. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with that. Not every movie has to do be ultra-serious oscar bait. It's okay for a movie to use explosions or fake kills or otherworldly plots to entertain the audience. After all, the main reason for films is to entertain. Pigs, however, isn't entertaining. Unlike some of the better Troma films (such as The Toxic Avenger & Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD), Pigs isn't trashy or glossy fun. Instead, it's dark and broody. The main selling point, the pigs, are barely featured (most of their screen time comes from close-ups). Instead, you get a drab plot about an abused woman , Lynn Hart (Toni Lawrence) snapping and killing men, with her boss, Zambrini (Marc Lawrence) taking advantage of this and feeding the dead corpses to his pigs (who crave on human flesh). There's no reason to drag this out into a longwinded review. Pigs is boring. There's nothing interesting about it. The plot's bland, the acting's terrible, the directing is horrendous, the editing is dreadful (many times cuts are used twice, which I though was the DVD skipping, but the sound was still intact) and the pigs are nowhere to be seen. Pigs is a boring film, plain and simple. Final Rating: 0%

See, and that's another thing I miss about R rated horror movies....the gratuitous NUDITY! I hear that the PIRAHNA remake aims to fix that though...and in glorious 3D (3DDD?) no less! But still...all these slasher films like SORORITY ROW et al that come out nowadays, they just lack the sense of fun and excitement that the original FRIDAY THE 13TH films, and it's slasher ilk had. There was usually always a chick who just had to get naked for some reason in those films, and truth be told, for those type of "popcorn slasher" movies, nudity was kind of a vital element. It let you know that you weren't watching some half-assed watered down PG drivel. If a girl could get naked, literally ANYTHING could happen. Screwdriver to the face? That could happen! Blowtorch to the back of the head? That could happen too! Because the girl got naked, and that taboo was dealt with, there really wasn't anything the filmmakers wouldn't do. I dunno. Maybe it's just me wanting to see more nudity in films where it makes sense to HAVE it. Films like BLACK XMAS and JENNIFER'S BODY are movies that scream out for extended shower scenes, or at the very least two or three good topless scenes. They tease us with these hot young starlets, and sometimes even have the nerve to show them from behind as they doff their top...but they rarely follow through. That's one of the reasons I give kudos to the FRIDAY THE 13TH remake. It had the whole recipe there...even IF the chick who got topless had some SERIOUSLY ugly implants.

A big part of why I got into horror films in a big way a few years ago (after being a very casual fan in my previous life) was precisely because it was a genre that I had always found comforting. In the slasher films of the '80s that I grew up watching, and loving, via Joe Bob Briggs and others, you could always count on several things - creative kills, a masked killer, and boobies aplenty. It isn't the nudity in and of itself that I found enjoyable in these films (don't get me wrong - I am very much a heterosexual male who enjoys such things on a visceral level), but it's one of the parts that make up the whole of the slasher movie experience. Eliminate one of those parts, and it just doesn't seem the same. Good call on Sorority Row and the other PG-style horror films of recent years, as well. I too had noticed - and griped - about how annoying it is seeing horror films that would have easily given us a few glimpses of gratuitous nudity in prior years, and now settle for lame "neck-up only" shots. Ironically (and I'm sure you'll agree here, 'Schach), the MOST annoyed that I ever was with this sort of "faux-modesty" was in the first American Grudge remake. Yes, folks, I'm actually complaining about my beloved Grudge franchise. I won't be completely ridiculous and say that it would have added to the movie's atmosphere or anything, but I thought this movie would have been the perfect opportunity to give us Gellar's first nude scene. Considering that the movie even has a shower scene, it wouldn't have been that difficult. But alas, even in the movie's Unrated Director's Cut, the movie gives us the PG-13 extreme facial close-up of doom during the shower scene just like all other mainstream horror films. Come on, Shimizu, you gave us a lingering shot of a girl with her friggin' BOTTOM JAW RIPPED OFF - you couldn't have afforded two seconds of SMG breasts? ;D

Alright so the last couple of nights I watch Tokyo Gore Police, The Exorcist, Suspiria and In My Skin. I also watched A Boy and His Dog, but that doesn't really apply to this thread. So here are my extremely short summed up thoughts.
Tokyo Gore Police - Fraggin' awesome. I liked all these movies I watched but this is the only one where if you came over today and wanted to watch it, I'd be ready to put it right back in and watch it again. I love the weirdness and over the top cartoon violence. The Robocop style commercials and anime-inspired dispatch chick cracked me up too.
The Exorcist- Believe it or not, this is the first time in my life I've ever watched more than a 5 minute segment of this movie. It's as great as it's made out to be technicality wise (acting, directing, effects, etc) BUT it's not nearly as scary as everyone makes it out to be. The whole time I watched it I just though more of "that's awesome" that being terrified. I'm just jaded I guess, but if it tells you how little it scared me I went to bed right afterwards and slept like a baby. Still one of the best horror movies I've seen though.
Suspiria- I must say that, while I liked it, this is one of the most over hyped horror movies I've ever seen. Little happens in it and the final scene and battle is one of the weakest I have ever seen in horror movie history. The movie ended way to easily and way to quickly and I never even felt like the main character was in any real danger.
In My Skin- Crazy movie, and I can see not everyone liking it. The Cronenberg influence is there. However, unlike the ads make it seem it's kind of small, as this really doesn't come off like a horror movie and more of a drama about someones descent into this kind of weird ass mutilation of themselves lifestyle.
Also, I got the new match up on my board.
