The producers have stated that since Saw VI had its worst box office showing, Saw VII will be the last one. The horror genre seems to have a tough time sticking to its guns when it comes to the "no more sequels to a popular franchise" statement. Friday the 13th has had no less than two "final" sequels, NOES had its "Final Nightmare" almost 20 years ago, and the original Halloween II was supposed to be the end of the Michael Myers saga. In other words, I'll believe it when I see it.

What's worse is the TCM franchise just keeps getting restarted. One sequel, a prequel and 3 remakes (well..2 "unofficial" ripoffs..er..remakes.)

Leatherface Prime needs to chainsaw a hole in continuity and reboot the goddamn ENTIRE thing already. Retcon everything outside of the first one, and make a proper "next gen" sequel to it. Maybe another family has taken up the old Sawyer residence or something...maybe Bubba finally got him some and has an equally huge, and equally mentally stunted son to carry on the legacy. Or maybe they just need to STOP making them. I dunno.

Maybe different writers or director? Maybe if Tobe Hooper were involved? I don't know. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for that movie.

A horror movie where the black guy doesn't die at the end. What a concept. ;D Now I'll admit, this movie legitimately scared me the first time I saw it. Of course I was only about 12 years old, but still. Watching it again years later I felt so silly.

Funny you should mention that, as when I was a kid, I remember my grandparents renting some action movie or other from the video store, and it had a trailer for this on it....and the trailer scared the bejeezus out of me. When Letherface turns around at the end and brandishes the saw, I ran from the room screaming. Let's see if I can find that trailer anywhere....

I got my Jaws shirt yesterday. It's even better than the picture.
The whole shirt is submersed in water. Near the Jaws poster on the front, you'll see splashes around it. The rest of the shirt is taken over by white ripples in the water. As my good friend (that I don't know) The Miz would say, it's awesome!

If nothing else, I really agree with Kevin Williamson on the importance of caring about the characters, which is something that a lot of modern horror films seem to treat as an afterthought. The problem with those words coming out of HIS mouth, at least IMO, is that I never really particularly liked Sidney as a character; I was WAY more into Cox & Arquette's characters, and always felt that Sidney was a little vanilla. Glandular condition.
Well, I haven't been around here much lately - my Christmas gift to myself this year was the ultimate edition James Bond box set, and I just got done going through those. Now that that's out of the way, I made it a point to order some horror movies. I STILL haven't seen The Orphan, which continues to get excellent reactions from not only you fine people but to a bunch of co-workers that I talk to about horror movies on a regular basis. Also ordered Trick R Treat, as well as Whispering Corridors, a J-horror film from the makers of Wishing Stairs, which I reviewed somewhere or other in here. Should be a fun mini-marathon.

Total agreement on your first paragraph there, TR. My most recent DVD purchases have leaned away from horror (like GI Joe seasons 1.1 and 1.2, and Frank Miller's Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT), but just yesterday I strolled to my local Big Lots store and picked up Hammer's THE MUMMY (1959) and a double feature disc featuring THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1957) and TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA (1969). So that should be fun.

I went back to the Blockbuster that's closing down but the only horror movie I picked up was Drag Me To Hell. I also grabbed The Rebel (a martial arts movie), I Love You Man, Hamlet 2 and the Aqua Teen movie. Anyways, I put up a few little mini-reviews up on my blog of the movies in my Blockbuster hauls that I've watched, but in short:
Terror Toons: Crap, but cheap crap. Murder Set Pieces: Meh. Too much shock for the sake of shock. Pontypool: Awesome.

Yeah, and you know...the whole character of Sidney Prescott has always been way too much of a Mary Sue for my liking (not to say that Kevin Williamson desperately wants to be Neve Campbell, but hear me out here). Think about it - she survives all three movies, which is rare in and of itself in the annals of horror franchises, she has no less than four guys running after the services of her poon, she's generally much more awesome and smarter than all the other characters in the films, etc. In short, I didn't really care about her at all, and thought that the series would have been WAY better if they would have killed her off in the opening goings of Scream 2. The second part of your post makes me think that I seriously need to see more B&W horror films, despite all the bitching I've done about them in the past.

Have to agree with TR on the point of Sidney Prescott. She has fully become the new Jamie Lee Curtis at this point, and all signs point to the only thing left for her character being the same as what was left for Jamie Lee in the HALLOWEEN series. That is, all that is left is for her to die in a controversial and shocking manner, probably at the beginning of the film. This is why I really don't like recurring hero characters in slasher movies. Either they HAVE to be the one to bring down the big bad (since, you know, they did it once before and all) or they have to get utterly OWNED to show that no one is safe. It's a catch .22 that you fall into just by using the character. The only way this is avoided is if the character survives film number 1, and skips 2 entirely, yet is brought back as a "last ditch" thing in number 3, only to sacrifice him/herself in a noble manner while taking down the big bad one more time. That being said, I still think Sidney's demise is going to be a matter of the former, not the latter. That, or she's going to end up actually BEING the killer this time round. Anyway....Ryno's posts inspired me to pop into my own local Blockbuster (which is not, to my knowledge closing down) and I picked up a neat little flick while I was there called Dead Snow. DEAD SNOW (2009) Directed by: Tommy Wirkola Starring: Charlotte Frogner, Vegar Hoel, Lasse Valdal, and Stig Frode Henriksen I'm going to keep this one brief, because really, there's not a whole lot of depth to this one. It plays like a Norwegian hybrid of Shaun of the Dead and The Evil Dead 2, set in the mountains of Norway. A group of medical students head to the mountains for some skiing, drinking, and sex, and end up pissing off a squadron of undead Nazi's who basically, from what I can gather, are only awakened when someone disturbs their slumber. What the Nazis do in the meantime, or when there AREN'T a group of lascivious teens in the vicinity is not explained. Anyway, it doesn't take long for our party lovin' Nords to discover a hidden cache of Nazi gold under their cabin (and the sight of these kids putting on jewelry and playing around with the gold is more than a bit uncomfortable, if you know your history) which they waste no time in pillaging. Bad move. This pisses off Der Commandant, and he summons a literal BATTALION of undead Reich soldiers to swarm this cabin and kill anything with a pulse. So now we've got the basic standard "humans vs. zombies" setup covered, and Dead Snow doesn't keep you waiting for that first kill any longer than it has to. Things go pretty much balls to the wall from that point on, and as a fun little homage to the films I mentioned earlier, Dead Snow isn't half bad. It doesn't reinvent the genre, and it doesn't really have any new tricks up it's sleeve, but i I had a good time with it. *** out of five. This one makes a damn fine "party" film, if for NOTHING else than the fact that you can sit back and mock the hell out of it with ease if you so choose, and it's got a lot of "OH S***!" kills in it.

So yeah, I went back to Blockbuster AGAIN a few hours ago. I've pretty much done nothing but watch movies this weekend so now I only had like 4 left (and 2 of them are Bangkok Dangerous). The only horror movie I bought was Trick 'r Treat, though (I also bought Punisher War Zone and JCVD). I mostly went there to pick up a video game that I was holding off on buying but it was gone. Needless to say, I had trouble finding anything really good left so I probably won't go back again, except for maybe one more time right before they close down.

Granted, I've been pretty outspoken regarding my dislike for the Scream franchise, but maybe part of that reason is my dislike for the main character. I like Neve Campbell okay, but like you I don't see what's so awesome about Sidney that has all these guys falling for her, and whatnot. *shrug* And I should point out that none of those Hammer films I mentioned earlier are b&w, so...kinda odd if I'm inspiring you to seek out that kinda stuff. But I love older movies like that, so by all means, go to it!

Hey, DSR! New month on my "Classic Horror Movies" calendar, and guess what the movie of the month for February is?
The original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD!
AWWW YEAH, BABY! Back where it all began for zombies....and after that film, the world was never the same!
