Injuries. I think they had big plans for him, having him be the first person to get Kurt Angle's number, and otherwise having him look like a badass at first. I think they just knew he was not in the physical condition to be anything like he was in ECW, and even then, a lot of that was because he was a judo expert facing guys without a lot of that sort of "real fighting" credibility, along with them pushing him like Goldberg. It would of been harder to pull that off in an organization where 6'0 is considered about average height.
I loved his feud with Lawler. At times ridiculous, but the best way to get him into commentating, and he got loads of heat from the crowd over it. I also like that it gave Raven a decent way of debuting.

As stated, size, injury, and more nationally established wrestlers coming in around the same time.

Owing to the fact he was all smoke and mirrors.

Pretty much boils down to lingering injuries from ECW and the fact that the Radicalz showed up all of a sudden.
He seems content with his in-ring in WWE and knew that's how it had to be. He was a decent commentator and still is.
Also, being short didn't help any.....not like he had much control there.

He aggravated an injury fairly early on into the run which killed his momentum.

I think the injuries he had meant the WWE never planned to use him in the ring long term.

His debut was great, but after that he kind of went nowhere. I was upset that he wasn't really getting anywhere after that, but due to his injuries his career kind of came to a stop.

He was booked horribly. They had no idea how to utilize the guy. I can't believe the way they had HHH squash him just so they could say their guy was better than the ECW champ. Vince himself even admitted later that it was a mistake.

Did Taz and Lawler have real heat with each other?

Easily the extra Z. That just killed him for me. That was always where my mind went when he came out. It sucked the edge out of his very soul.

I swear, Tazz would be World champ now if they gave him the Hornswoggle gimmick.

Totally the Radicalz. Benoit was like a better version of Tazz.
Add to that, his injury and heel turn when he came back...where he feuded and lost to Jerry Lawler.

I remember Triple H squashing him in a match here in Philadelphia a month after his debut. I had forgot about this up until a few years ago. I wish I did not remember it, because Taz, in my view, should have won that match. WWE dropped the ball on another guy from the then competitor(s).

Well, also, kind of a problem was a month in to his run, WWE upper pretty much told him "Your suplexes are unsafe. You can't really suplex anyone anymore..."
What the hell is the appeal of the Human Suplex Machine if he can't suplex anyone?
Still mad to this day they screwed him up... :-(

I was at the Smackdown right after his debut, and in all honesty the thing that really killed his momentum was the arrival of the Radicalz.
Granted there was most likely more going on, but to most, this was the main reason.
The injuries just put the cap on it.

well, his size and the fact he wasn't a talent created by Vince for one.
However, I think injuries caught up to him.
