To be fair, Virtual Boy wasn't really virtual reality. It was a Game Boy on steroids with 3-D effects (and completely awesome, but I'm probably going to the grave as the last person to believe that).
I think real virtual reality will make a comeback when the technology finally catches up with the idea. It's eventually going to have to; video gaming doesn't have much more room to evolve (and Nintendo's billion gimmicks aren't the answer).

Looking at the nintendo Wii. I think we'll have a home version of motion suits where we can control the characters that we see on TV. I think the idea of slipping on a mask to escape into another world seems interesting. But I can't see it ever coming to fruition.

While were at it, Virtual reality wasn't really virtual reality either. The virtual reality machines you saw in fiction were very exagerrated versions of the actual thing and probably lead people to think it was more than what it actually was. I played vr once and it was just a gloryfied video helmet.

A ring with motion sensors you put on the floor. As I recall, it failed rather handily because no one was making games to support the hardware, and the capabilities of a Sega Genesis were not up to par with the sort of processing that would be needed. I could be imagining things, though. I lived in rural Wyoming, and the nearest place to buy a video game during my formative years was 100 miles away. To say the least, I wasn't up on the latest technology until the internet came along.
