Great review, and let me just say that I love that last line of yours. I have a set old cheesy B-movies that I just bought (they're drive-in flicks from the 60's) and I think that line ("Dull dumb picture that occasionally gets dumb in ways that are entertaining") sums up a LOT of those films. I mean, WOW. Seems like, with a lot of those pictures, the people who made them KNEW they were destined for the drive in, and thus would probably not end up being paid a whole lot of attention to, if you get my drift. ;D The trade off is, if you DO sit down and try and watch one of those damn things....it becomes an exercise in tedium. I tried to watch "The Pick Up" the other day....and damn it all, I ended up paying more attention to a couple of hummingbirds outside my window than to the movie. Then I just got up and turned the damn thing off and went for a walk. There's only so much hippy jabberjawing that I can take before I reach my limit. Seriously, that movie was like two hippy couples filmed each other laying in the grass and daydreaming. I'm fairly sure it fascinated them....but it bored me to tears. As for the WOLF MAN....yeah. Color me puzzled. The average movie goer is in love with this movie, but the press seems to enjoy eviscerating it for not simultaneously revering the original, and being a whole new take on it to boot. Where was this hostility when Zombie was crapping all over HALLOWEEN? Or for that matter, when P. Dunesy was pissing on the Legacy of Leatherface? Oh that's right. Those movies aren't ICONIC Hollywood royalty like the Wolf Man is. Gotcha. Even though most reviewers couldn't pick Lon Chaney Jr out of a lineup if their lives depended on it, they love to sit there and moan about how his great legacy is now besmirched by this needless remake...yadda yadda yadda. It gets a bit confusing, this double standard. So let me ask the thread at large this question: What horror film do you think could MOST use a remake/update? Be it due to advances in FX, or what have you...what films do you think could use updating? One of my choices would be the long rumored Creature from the Black Lagoon. I think if you get Tyler Mane in the "Creature" suit (I mean come on...think about how badass a 'roided up version of Abe Sapien would look) and let him kick some ass and eat some invading scientists all while chasing Scarlett Johansson or Naomi Watts (come on, they were both BORN to play the old 1940's bombshell in peril) you'd have a legit summer smash on your hands. Maybe put Nathan Fillion in there as the dashing leading man/hero, and you've got a hell of a cast. Get on your knees and BEG Guillermo Del Toro to direct it, and you cannot miss. ;D Oy, THE PICK-UP. Usually, someone puts nudity into a picture to make it less boring, but THE PICK-UP somehow manages to just make nudity boring. And I've professed my admiration for Lon Chaney Jr. in the previous thread, but I was more than willing to give this remake a fair shake, and I'm glad I did, because I had a good time. And (not to sound conceited) I have a BA in Media Studies, Film & TV. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy a little bloodletting once in a while. As for the idea of films that I think could use a remake...I'm sure one will come to me soon enough, but right now I'm drawing a blank. As for your suggestion of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON: meh. The original picture does a fine job of telling a classy little story, and HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP does a fine job of being exploitation schlock (and I mean that in the nicest way possible) with the same basic premise. I'm good, thanks.

So let me ask the thread at large this question: What horror film do you think could MOST use a remake/update? Be it due to advances in FX, or what have you...what films do you think could use updating? Nightmare on Elm Street, and I am being totally serious. I've said it many times before, but IMO the original picture is a horrendously overrated film with completely one-dimensional characters, and the sequels increasingly perverted what the original intent of the series was all about (with the exception of Dream Warriors, my #2 horror flick of all time), so if there's one horror franchise out there in DESPERATE need of a facelift, this is it. Of course, we're actually getting the redux in just a few weeks, but since it's being done by the aforementioned P. Dunesy (great line ) the jury is still out there on whether or not we'll see an improvement. Everyone seems to have this Drive-In Classics movie set. Tehboobz reviewed a few movies from it back in the day (like, way back in the day - we're talking horror thread #1 territory here), and it sounds like The Pick-Up isn't the only movie in the set that manages to make sex and nudity boring. I vividly remember the review of The Teacher and Boobz' increasing frustration with its tedium. And Rorschach, you and I seem to be in agreement that Nathan Fillion is awesomeness personified. The guy's been aces in everything I've seen him in, ESPECIALLY in of one of the TWO network shows that I watch on a weekly basis, Castle (the other is Human Target, with your friend and mine Jackie Earle Haley ).

I *heart* Nathan Fillion. I really do. I think SLITHER was awesome in all it's cheesy glory, and Fillion did a DAMN fine job in his role. That said, I grow increasingly frustrated with Hollywood continually missing the boat on this guy. He was great on SERENITY and FIREFLY....and heck, he's been great in just about everything he's done...WHITE NOISE 2 notwithstanding. If JAWS ever does get a serious remake, I am perfectly fine with Fillion being cast as Brody. He's got that same everyman, instantly likable quality that Roy Scheider had. In fact, my shortlist for that role would include three names: Aidrian Brody, Nathan Fillion, and Thomas Jane. And while we're on the subject of remakes...I want my GRUDGE 3D, dammit! ;D I'd rather it not be a total reboot, but if they have to reboot it in order to get Fuji back as Kayako....so be it. I can't believe no one in Hollywood has caught on to how PERFECT for the 3D medium this franchise would be. So MUCH stuff could be made to come out of the screen...not the least of which would be Kayako herself.

I keep hearing about another Blob, but I haven't seen anything of it. I have no idea if a new CHUD is even being thought of but damn, put 30-40 million into that concept and I think good things could happen.

Rob Zombie has, at one point or another, been attached to direct both of these films. No joke. The latest one he's rumored to be a part of is a redneck version of THE BLOB.

Mostly because I remembered Jay North as Dennis the Menace from that old b&w TV show, and seeing him bone his teacher and get stalked by a psychopath was weird and sorta funny in a perverse way. But yeah, aside from CINDY & DONNA (which is basically a softcore porno with some tiny-titted hotties...*SWOON*), I had a pretty lousy time trudging through that DVD set.

Dennis the Menace Bones a Teacher would have been such an awesome title. ;D I *heart* Nathan Fillion. I really do. Wait...there was a White Noise 2 Never forget the day I showed up in the theater to watch that movie. It's one of three flicks I've seen in my life with a public audience of one - myself. The lack of Grudge sequels is sadly due to the law of diminishing returns. Every movie in the franchise has been massively profitable, but none moreso than the first American film, which grossed something like $150 million worldwide from a $10 million budget. Grudge 2 doubled the budget and did far less business, although it still made a very nice profit. As much as I would LOVE to see Grudge 3D (seriously, just imagine the stuff in my friggin' sig in 3D), I'm not holding my breath.

I thought Jackie Earle Haley was playing Freddy Krueger, not Mickey Rourke. :-P
But yeah, I still can't get over the fact that MTV is playing movies now. I was flipping through the channels and stopped for a bit on America's Best Dance Crew, mostly because they were advertising The Amityville Horror (surely the remake) for later that night. I'm still confused. Also, I found it funny one time when I went to Barnes and Noble in their DVD bargain bin, I found The Amityville Horror but the sticker on the top of the case said "Michael Bay's The Amityville Horror" as if it were a warning sticker or something.

That actually ought to be a requirement. "BEWARE! THIS IS THE REMAKE BY PLATINUM DUNES! NOT, WE REPEAT NOT, THE SUPERIOR ORIGINAL VERSION!" Slap that sticker across the top of the box, and we ought to be good to go. ;D

So, I just saw Let The Right One In for the first time. I'd heard a lot of hype for this one before tonight, and was a bit concerned that it would raise my expectations too high. After watching this film, my expectations were simply not met.
Rather, they were exceeded. From the opening credits, it becomes very obvious that a lot of time, love, and care went into this film. The two young leads were absolutely outstanding in their respective roles, and were capable of displaying more emotion and character depth than your average adult Hollywood actor. I mean, WOW. I really have to emphasize how impressed I was with those two. They steal every scene they're in together.
The story is just so beautifully crafted, the film so well-directed, everything about this film just clicked. It treats the vampire subgenre seriously and with reverence. I'd become so immersed in the story that I'd often forget that I was watching a foreign language film. Note to Twilight: THIS is how you "modernize" the vampire mythos. Give us characters we actually care about and a story to be emotionally invested in.
Color me impressed - EXTREMELY impressed. After tonight, this may very well have found a spot in my all-time Top 10. This one gets a perfect 5/5 from me, easily.

I forgot to post this the other day, but, Aja's remake of The Hills Have Eyes was on Spike TV the other night, and it wasn't cut too bad (mostly profanity and the big gore scenes). And I forgot how good this movie was. Still need to check out Aja's Mirrors.
Anyway, would anyone recommend The Hills Have Eyes 2? I know it involves the military, but beyond that, I have no clue.

Don't bother with the remake's sequel. You're better off, trust me. But I do agree that Aja's remake is one of the better ones out there.

Guy: Glad to hear you liked Let the Right One In as much as I and others did! I was kind of worried that I had simply hyped this film up too much in the last thread, but reading your words on it, I am glad to see that I didn't do that, and that you enjoyed it, and indeed, saw much of the same great qualities in it, that I did. As for the sequel to Aja's excellent remake of Hills Have Eyes, don't bother. It has none of the great suspense, or indeed, none of the great story, that it's predecessor has. It involves some of the stupidest, most inept National Guard soldiers and recruits you will EVER...ever see. I said it way back in the early horror thread when this sequel came out, and I'll say it again....but dammit, the National Guard should have sued the makers of this movie for slander and libel. It's one thing to have ONE stupid soldier, you know? That much I could have lived with....but having every single last Guardsman portrayed as a bumbling goof who can barely walk three steps without falling in the dirt, or misfiring a weapon, or crapping themselves in fear when they see a mutant....that's plain insulting. When the inbred, triple retarded, and outright idiotic hill people mutants are leaps and bounds smarter than your heroes....time to call it a day.

There's a guy on youtube who is reviewing all the movies on the UK Video Nasties list. I'm wondering if it'll even be possible for him to find copies of all of them. I wouldn't mind watching them myself. Or at least just the ones that are worth watching that I haven't seen already.

I have to admit, though I've been shaky on the Nightmare on Elm Street remake (considering the original is one of my favorites), the posters have been phenomenal. They're starting to bring back that fear I had of Freddy when I was a kid (before I fell in love with horror). Still a bit shaky on the film itself, but will give it a fair chance (since I did enjoy the Friday the 13th remake, though that was easier to remake).

For me, it's a film like Tenebre or The Beyond where you see it for the first time and wonder what other treasures have been hidden by the bin of time. Not that the film is old; it's more like it's just not as recognized as newer films. Thankfully we have a community here and elsewhere that helps us remember classics like these.
