Some quick thoughts on two asian films I saw tonight. The Host (Blu-Ray) - This film surprised me. It's not completely a monster film nor drama nor comedy. It borders those three genres in the same way Return of the Living Dead did for Horror Comedy. If the test of any film is keeping my attention while I play WoW; this film suceeded amazingly. Highly recommended. Pulse (DVD) - The 2001 japanese version (no way I'm touching the american one). This film was enjoyable, but it kind of highlights my problem with japanese horror. The japanese tell great ghost stories and have great atmosphere, but the length to get from point A to point B in the story drives me crazy sometimes. It's a very slow build to the end and it's quite different from how American horror operates. That being said I find enjoyable and similar to The Ring and The Grudge in terms of story. The only huge problem I have with The Host is that horrible, off-base, and totally misleading pull quote on the front of the box. "On par with JAWS!" my fat, white, 9% Irish ASS! Whoever it was at AICN that said that (I think it was Knowles) needs to have his head examined. As you said, Fulci, if that film was comparable to ANYTHING, it was ROTLD, although I would go a bit further and say that, but crossed with CLOVERFIELD by way of the original Japanese GODZILLA. But JAWS? Not a chance in HELL. I find even the most horrible movies can drag at least a somewhat positive quote from somewhere and paste it on the front of the box.Yet I wonder who buys movies based on the review quote on the box? If Roger Ebert isn't going to sway me then neither will some jack off from the Bum $(&% Bugle.

Honestly, my brother will do a blind buy if a pull quote from Bloody-Disgusting is on the DVD cover.

The Foywonder has had some great stories about the things he's said in reviews being pulled for box quotes where he's been horribly misquoted.

Pulse/Kairo is awesome...one of my ten favorite horror movies of the last decade. I actually enjoy the deliberate pace of it and other Asian horror films; I'll take it over the Saw-style MTV exploits any day.

The Horror Hall Of Shame is back, baby! First induction of 2010. Hopefully there won't be as long to wait for the next induction Ridiculous Resurrections It's been a while since I've inducted into the HHOS but here's a concept that I felt had to be included. We all know that the killer is never really dead and film makes usually find a way to bring them back for the sequel. A certain suspension of disbelief is required to be a horror fan but sometimes film makes can stretch it as can be seen in these examples of weird, wacky and honestly baffling awakenings: Note, this is just a select list and in no way encompasses all ridiculous Resurrections. And SPEAKING of resections. Also this is not an induction for the films listed just the way in which the antagonist was brought back to life. Halloween: ResurrectionWhat better place to start. Having already inducted Halloween 5, you can be forgiven for thinking that I have it in for ole Mikey Myers. Alas nothing could be further from the truth. I LOVE the Halloween franchise, which is why I get so pissed off when the writers decide to make an unholy mess of the series continuity (see: Curse of Thorn). I don't know about you but I really liked H20. I felt it was a great end to the series at the time and brought great closure to the original story as well as dragging the series back out of the funk created by parts 5 and 6 (basically by no selling them!). Heck! What better way to end things than have Jamie Lee Curtis decapitate Michael? Perfect. Well guess what kids? It wasn't Michael after all! Thanks to the magic of retcon. One of the best sequels of the series has been ruined just so a horrible installment could be made. Thanks a lot assholes! Anyway, lets move on to a slightly better horror film Nightmare on Elm Street part IV: The Dream MasterGiven the concept of the NOES series, Freddy could always be brought back to life in more creative ways! In this case a fire pissing dog did the trick. Yep, not much else I can say about that. A better film even still: Friday the 13th part VI: Jason LivesBefore I start, I need to say this. I LOVE Friday the 13th part VI. It had a great basic slasher story, humour that was actually funny and a kick ass soundtrack featuring Alice Cooper! What made it even better was the fact that fans were crying for Jason to make a return, especially after a New Beginning and Roy Burns stunk out the joint! Yet, Jason had been cremated! That's pretty hard to come back from I don't care who you are. Ah heck, lets just stick him in a grave and hope no one notices. Well I noticed....I'm on to you!! Like I said earlier, this is a tiny cross section of silly Resurrections in horror and if I come across/remember more I'll likely post another edition. Stay tuned! Thumbs up to the new inductions! The previous ones were Van Sant's Psycho, Halloween 5...and was there anything else? I'm drawing a blank. "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" I kinda half assed that one though. Might revisit it and do up a proper induction, even if it means watching it again....errrrr

The Foywonder has had some great stories about the things he's said in reviews being pulled for box quotes where he's been horribly misquoted. This is pretty common, especially with horror movies. They're also found of adding exclamation marks where they weren't originally. So a halfhearted "Movie X is the best since the first, but that's not saying much." magically becomes "Movie X is the best since the first!"

Yeah, that's pretty much what they did to Foy with his quote on ICE SPIDERS...I think his quote was something like " Ice Spiders is like Eight Legged Freaks meets Hot Dog the Movie" and the movie makers just used that last bit, and put and exclamation point after it. This is why I'm glad I'm not an official newspaper movie critic...I can only shudder to think of how Platinum Dunes would mangle my scathing, bile-laced diatribes to swing in their favor....then again, many of my rants against PD are honestly unprintable in polite press anyway, so it would probably be a wash. ;D

I don't know why this series going so long bugs me so badly, since a few iconic horror series (NOES, HALLOWEEN, and F13) have already done the same. But for some reason, I am just BEYOND tired of all the SAW films already.

Good God...they're talking about REBOOTING the friggin' Saw series?
You know there's not going to be any five-year layoff in between the end of this "series" and the beginning of the other, either. At the rate they're going, we're getting a Saw film every October till the end of time.

They're not rebooting SAW, They said they're gonna wait a couple of years and release them as STV releases.
Most probably like the Hellraiser movies, Standalone stories with the SAW theme and the Doll playing the pinhead type role.

They just need to film Tobin saying "You did a bad thing" from about 16 different angles and they're set for Jigsaw in the STV films.

Figured I'd tell you guys about this, even if its only a cheap plug for my blog. I decided to test out doing movie reviews and the first movie I've chosen is Murder Set Pieces. Needless to say, I didn't like the movie. Well, it was OK I guess but as I wrote the review, I REALLY tore into it. It's pretty long and it's probably NSFW (due mostly to language, the included pictures just shows blood and some censored boobage). Link to the blog is in my sig. Let me know what you guys think.

Good review, and I agree with a lot of it. When this film first came out, I remember Foywonder and Uncle Creepy over at DreadCentral ripping it apart pretty badly for pretty much the same reasons you did on an early episode of their Podcast "Dinner for Fiends". In fact, they took a similar stance on calling it "torture porn", saying that if ANY movie would be found in the dictionary next to the term, MURDER SET PIECES is it. I think Foy even went so far as to say that Eli Roth and Co. were officially vindicated by the existence of this film. However, I still use the term "torture porn" where I think it applies, though I have become more judicious in using it after being exposed to MSP. One recent example of "torture porn" that I can think of is the atrociously awful Thora Birch vehicle TRAIN. Forget plot, forget characters...that movie's sole reason for being is to cram as many shots of viciousness and torture into its runtime as it can.

Kinda like the official "Horror Classic of the Month" on my calendar for April: Dementia 13! ;D

You're probably all very sick of hearing me talk about how awesome it is (I've reviewed the movie THREE TIMES already), but there's some new thoughts on what I consider to be the pinnacle of the ANOES series, Dream Warriors, on my blog. As always, it's linked in my sig.

Like for THE SCREAMING SKULL, where they had audience members fill out forms and had a nurse and casket ready in case anyone in the audience died of fright. The opening couple minutes of the movie explain all of this, and then the rest of the movies run-time (a little over an hour) turns out to be incredibly corny and kinda stupid! ;D
