My little ode to the NEW Nightmare...One two...Freddy's new movie blew...three four, s***ty Rotten Tomatoes score...five, six, Platinum Dunes sucks dick...seven, eight wasn't worth the wait, nine ten, never let Form and Fuller remake another classic again! Did you see it, R-Man? My official one-word reaction to this movie: meh. I actually did go to the trouble of typing out a full-length review on my blog for anyone who's interested, but won't be posting it here out of respect to guyofownage, who long ago called the honors of being the one to review the movie here. As I've said many times in the past, the original movie had LOADS to improve upon, and this movie...didn't do it.

Heh...I used my free pass, and my theater ended up having a huge power malfunction during the first half, so I get to go back and finish it tomorrow, on the house. But I did not like what I saw. I really don't care all that much about the hullaballoo over Haley's version of Freddy (Fred-schach?), but these characters surrounding Freddy...these kids just.....were they purposely picking kids out of the Twilight acting pool? Anyway, check out the official thread for an interesting debate between me and Koda, concerning the very point you just made. ;D

Yeah, I need to hang on to this one and pull it out whenever something stupid happens.
But anyway, I didn't really plan on going to see this one in theaters in the first place so I guess that's considered another bullet dodged.

I will actually be seeing this tomorrow (Saturday) as I overslept and missed my local theater's lone showing today. Judging by the reactions I'm seeing already, though, it turns out I may have been right all along

Sounds like another movie to watch on the xbox or rent and make a decision if it's worth a blu-ray purchase. Sad they had to screw Nancy up.

It seems to me, when (if) I see this, my biggest problem is going to be the same problem I've had with 90% of the horror remakes that have come out in the last few years. It's not the monsters, or the production, or the imagery, but it's the characters and the writing. Especially when it comes to teenage characters. I think Kyle Smith did put it best (and I really don't like the guy that much, from the few reviews I've read of his). The "Twilight"-ification of youth in movie characterization makes most of the kill fodder in movies from the 70's and 80's look like they're Harvard graduates who perform Shakespeare on the weekends and are survivalist experts. And it's not the kids themselves, it's the reflection of Hollywood on teenagers and how it believes how they act. I am so glad I'm not young in this day and age.

Ok, i'm going to post my short as hell review here, because I suck at reviewing and at least it'll get sold here, unlike the actual thread, where it's mano v. mano between Rorschach and Koda. Simple as, simple does. Meh. It didn't insult my intelligence as I guessed, unlike that guy who's name rhymes with Jombi. Haley was pretty good, not the best role he's done, but a good clap. Too many freakin' CAT! scenes...to the point where it happened and my ears hurt from the music that accompanies it. Cast was mostly blah, as expected. Overall - 2 and a half blades out of 5. Rent it if you must, but just get the Blu-Ray of the original and be done with it. EDIT: Of course, after writing this, I go read TR's review and he pretty much nailed it better than what I have to say, so...good for us! Haha.

My already-mentioned moronic college friend said that this movie was really scary, which makes me scratch my head. It's definitely a LOUD movie (re: the CAT scenes) that may cause ringing in your ears, but there's really very little scary about it. I also have to throw this out there to the WC horror faithful - are there any suggestions for Hall of Fame entries? We haven't really spent much time praising anything in this thread. Maybe somebody else could take the honors for a thread.

Platinum Dunes making a by the numbers horror movie that you forget about the moment you leave the theater, I'm stunned, stunned.

I'm watching the Cinema Snob review of it now and he surprisingly loved it, calling it "the best remake Platinum Dunes could possibly make". So I MAY check it out when it comes to DVD, but nothing more. HERE's his review, by the way. Language warning. Maybe spoilers as I haven't watched the whole thing (it's about a half-hour long) but he tries to stay away from them.

It's definitely a LOUD movie (re: the CAT scenes) that may cause ringing in your ears, but there's really very little scary about it. Yeah, I overheard a couple people calling it scary as well. Either that or they were trying to save face. It sounded like it was getting no-sold by the crowd I was with (the rest of the theater), which only has happened to me when I went to see Talladega Nights Of course, the same type of people that is devauling the genre as we know it. Way to go, preppy scum. You do know you're causing this epidemic of mass proportions. Way to f***ing go. I'll admit though, I jumped. Simply because I wasn't paying attention and it got me. Not the jump scenes that actually scare the crap out of you, the jump scenes that when they catch you, they laugh at you, and you sit back going, "Ah, dammit!" because you look like a freakin' jackass. Anyways, my brother is apparently seeing it tonight, so we'll see how he feels about it. Like I said, he's a mix. He'll pay money to see all the devauled horror crap, but on a good day, he'll find something pretty damn awesome (it's because of him that I found out about two of my favorite indie horror films of the decade; Dance of the Dead and Laid to Rest. So it'll be interesting to hear his take on it.

Well, after over a year of being vehemently against the very notion of a Nightmare On Elm Street reboot, I am finally off to see said film. My review will be posted at some point this evening. Wish me luck

This movie was horrible. Easily one of the worst of the series IMO and they rely on quick edit cuts way to much and put no psychology behind the movie. Almost all the kills were what we've already seen in 1984, only toned down or more fake looking. That's right the kills were done better in 1984 and the effects looked more real then too! There was no tension at all and even things like the little girls singing and all had no creepiness to them. Oh don't get me started on how 90% of the "scares" were of the preditcable, cheap loud and noisey jumps.
The positives are that Jackie Earl did a fine job though and they really did make Freddy a sick summabitch by the end of the movie. Also some of the scenery was great like the snow rooms and the boiler room.

Just got back from seeing NOES. Mark me down for a meh. Jackie Earle Haley did a great job as Freddy, but he doesn't have much to work with. Samuel Bayer relies too heavily on scenes from the original, and any time he comes up with a somewhat original idea, he masks it by pulling back and retreading to familiar territory. Aside from Kyle Gallner (Quentin), the rest of the cast is abysmal and dull. Rooney Mara reminded me a lot of Kristen Stewart (dull, no charisma, looks like she's reading off of cue cards) and the rest of the cast were just filler.
With better actors and a better writing team, this could have been a good take on a classic. Instead, it's what I feared: a sub-par attempt that came up short.

A better director as well, IMO, Jacket. As this director fell back to rehashing the old ones or using quick, jittery cuts way to much.

Good luck on that, Guyofownage. As you no doubt know, I REALLY wanted this movie to be good, and I was very let down, so I can't imagine what you'll think.
True story - my heart was actually POUNDING as I walked into the theater yesterday. After many months of thinking that this movie had so much potential to be GREAT, the bad reviews (both on here and in the press) had me feeling very apprehensive on that long, 40-minute trek to the cinema.
