Seems I still encounter people that don't know that there are 50 states here in America. Some of them are so convinced that there's 51 or 52.
Canada is usually named as a state by the people that I encounter that are confused.
On a Craigslist listing someone made reference to 52 states.
So, surely we all have met someone that doesn't know how many states there are.
Any stories to share?

Puerto Rico is usually another one mentioned when people think there are more states than there are. The country could become a state, but chooses not to.

Puerto Rico and DC usually confuse stupid people because they have representatives in Miss America and for a lot of people that is how they learn the states.

I know of more people who think Puerto Rico is an independent country than a state. Which is sad because it's neither: it's a commonwealth.

The US needs to buy out Yukon and British Columbia, Alaska needs to stop being a freak State.

I've never encountered anyone that didn't know there are 50 states, but if I did I would imagine these two places would be the reason why. Not the Miss America thing (I've never heard of anyone learning their states that way, does anyone even watch that anymore?), but rather PR and DC being territories.

I had a co-worker that only counted 48 states, as she didn't consider Hawaii and Alaska states because they weren't actually connected to the continental US.
Don't know if I should shake my head at her or not. She was born in Puerto Rico.

The country could become a state, but chooses not to. I'm not sure about that. I know there are lots of people in PR and DC who want statehood and talk about the obstacles into becoming one.

I've actually heard a few people say they thought there were 52 states. No idea where the confusion comes from though. Certainly here, American history/geography etc isn't really taught in schools which wouldn't help. It's not people thinking Canada or anywhere else was a state as the people who get it wrong couldn't name 5 states so it's not that they're mis-counting, just that they hae the number wrong.

Why Canada and not Puerto Rico? At least PR would be an acceptable error...
