I apologize if this question has been asked ad nauseum, but was it ever revealed who was supposed to be behind this? Not necessarily on TV, but did anyone like Russo or someone say who?
The one person I've heard the most about was Goldust, but I've heard other guys as well.

Goldust or Thrasher always seem to be the names brought up.

It was supposed to be Goldust, but he left the company before it was revealed.
I believe he talked about it on an interview recently. I can try to find it...

It was never revealed on TV but it was originally meant to be Goldust, though the storyline began when he was using his real name Dustin Runnels who was using sort of a religious, born again type character who said "he is coming back." It originally was GDTV which I believe may have been meant as a subtle hint that Dustin was not being sincere in his moral character and that the GD stood for Goldust and Goddamn (though this would never be said on TV). The angle even started out with GTV focusing on Terri Runnels, who on TV was broken up with Dustin. In the end, the person Dustin was saying was going to be coming back was Goldust and that he was not really being sincere with his religious/moralist character. Dustin left for WCW before any of this could play out.

Actually, he abandoned the religious character and went back to Goldust shortly before GTV debuted.

Didn't Russo say on Wrestlecrap Radio that it was meant to be Tom Green?
Don't feel like going through the podcast archives to find out.

Yeah, the whole born-again Christian thing happened in 1998, because he was back to playing the Goldust character until he eventually left for WCW.

It was Thrasher. It was revealed on a random episode of Heat as the conclusion to the whole "Chaz: Woman Beater" angle. Thrasher used GTV footage to show that Chaz's girlfriend was lying. This led to the reunification of the Headbangers.
The G stood for Glen, which was Thrasher's real name.

I always thought it was for Vic Grimes, GTV would stand for Grimes Television. At about that time he was sitting in the front row a couple of times dressed completely in white. Anyone else remeber that?

This led to the reunification of the Headbangers. The G stood for Glen, which was Thrasher's real name. I never realized that! Thank you! Here it is WWF @ Long Island, NY - Nassau Coliseum - October 5, 1999 (12,133; sell out) Sunday Night Heat: Steve Blackman defeated Chaz via submission; after the bout, Glen Ruth prevented Mariana from having Chaz arrested again by showing GTV footage of her putting makeup on herself to appear as though she was beaten up; after the bout, Ruth and Chaz reunited as the Headbangers www.thehistoryofwwe.com/99.htmWhat an anti-climatic ending though. And it made no sense. And was used at least once afterwards with no mention of Thrasher who wrestled his last match that year in WWE 3 months earlier. WWF @ Anaheim, CA - Arrowhead Pond - October 9, 2000 Raw is War: Val Venis & the Goodfater (w/ Steven Richards) defeated WWF IC Champion Eddie Guerrero & Chyna at 4:29 when Venis pinned Guerrero with a gutwrench powerbomb; during the match, Chyna refused to tag in after watching GTV's footage of Eddie backstage with the hoes, Mandy & Victoria; after the bout, Billy Gunn made the save for Chyna against Venis, the Goodfather, and Steven Richards www.thehistoryofwwe.com/00.htm Gotta love wrestling continuity.

For some reason, I remember there was some rumor that Chris Jericho was going to debut as "Chris Gericho" so that he'd be the obvious man behind GTV.

Having it be Thrasher was weird, as the angle KEPT GOING ON even when he was gone from the WWF. WTF?

This kind of ties in to my previous thread about Just Joe. I recall hearing that WWE floated the idea of having him be the one behind GTV. But again, it all ultimately went the way of the do do before anything could come of it.
