I sometimes put a line through my Z's though, especially if I'm doing math or writing it in another situation with numbers involved.

No that's ridiculous. I also don't make my lowercase a's like the one's on the computer. Those are weird. I like them just a lowercase d, but with the top cut off.

I usually do it but that's only so I can distinguish between my 1's and 7's.

In situations where I need people to be 100% its a 7 and not somehow a 1, then yes, I do(usually when I'm writing down money figures, and such). I also draw a line through zeros when they could be mistook for a capital O.

I didn't use to until I took my 6th grade math class and the teacher did. I'd write down what they put up on the board and it just became a habit to do it. It looks way better with a line through it, this way 7 it looks akward.

because when some people try and make 'proper looking' 1's, they look like 7's.

A curve, but a very understated one. Its kind of in the middle of the two types of nines.

Also if I see the number 7 written down in a maths exam without a line, I have to put the line through it.
