When a movie is released on DVD many decide to change the cover, often for the worse. Name films were the original cover was much better. Like this one; lowkey, understated, creative: Then they replace it with this generic poster with the unnecessary hyping of the later famous costars names. Here too, real artwork and something really original: Replaced with this cliched image: Remakes I can easily live with, but this I just see as pointless.

I always thought the Dark Knight Case with the Batcycle was a pretty lame cover. I think they replaced it with the Joker latter on.

Near Dark on it's recent release on DVD. Hmmm. I wonder what they were going for here. Not that I blame them, it's smart business to try and capitalise on the Twilight success. But any Twilight fan who buys it on the look of the cover is in for quite a large shock.

It seems to me the worst victims of this are films from the 60s-80s, especially as released by MGM but they're all guilty of trying to revamp or replace the original art with unanimously poor results, with an emphasis on displaying the star(s) in the forefront and replacing painted artwork with photograhy (grr!) at the expense of creativity and imagination. Presented below in spoiler tabs are examples from my collection that I find particularly disappointing: Black Caesar, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Burning, Deep Red, Escape from New York, Fahrenheit 451, First Blood, The Great Escape, Just Between Friends, Monkey Shines, The Monster Squad, Paths of Glory, Real Genius, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The Unforgiven, The Wizard and Xtro.

The JAWS series treatment when it comes to DVD covers, where they darkened the HELL out of the 30th Anniversary Edition, and then made the other three covers look damn near identical, has ALWAYS pissed me off.
At the very least, they could have brought back the "red" poster for the cover of JAWS 2's DVD, and the "waterskiing" poster for the cover of JAWS III's DVD.

I have the Blu-Ray as well. But it's the one with Batman standing in front of the building on fire (and the fire is in the shape of the Batman symbol). I like that cover

Some of the new "cheapie" lenticular covers they've come out with are kind of badass though. Like the ones for Friday the 13th and Alien and The Ring.

trick or treat... and for the dvd release... I wont lie. That makes me want to see it more. which is the point of the cover actually, there cameo's are only like a minute legnth for both of them, ozzy playes a TV Preacher yelling about how rock n' roll is evil! and Gene playes a DJ at a radio station...both combined probably are only on screen for 2 min.

That "Night Of The Creeps" blu-ray is an absolutely wretched hackjob.
Really, these are prime examples of how horror movie box-art has gone from legitimately terrifying to "Hey, this famous person was in the movie for 5 mins. let's throw them on the cover."

I can't find a picture of it, but the new "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" artwork is terrible. The funny thing is they had both DVDs in the $5 at Walmart and there's just no comparison.
I'm talking about the movie by the way.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2: Poster art: DVD: I would like to say they rectified this with the SE, but... Yeah, the movie's not Saw. KTHXBYE. On the Bill Murray tip... Aaaaaaaand... And one that particularly infuriates me. Man, f*** you, DVD marketing execs and your shitty Photoshop.
