He's The Million Dollar Man. He doesn't need a reason to be rich.

Related to DiBiase...
I did like how on the Saturday Night's Main Event DVD how Ted Jr. mentioned he asked his dad how much the Million Dollar Belt cost, and DiBiase said "More than our house and car"

In retrospect I would have liked to see a face turn after his investments fail and he loses his money.

I believe after he debuted they used the inheritance explanation in the mid south areas where fans were already familiar with him. As others have stated, the Apter mags did as well.

Ted DiBiase was the highest paid mid card wrestler ever. I think it's unfair to call him a midcarder. He was brought in at Main event level and pretty much stayed there (or at upper mid-card) until Money Inc. And even then, Money Inc. vs. Megamaniacs was a co-headline at WM9. He definitely wasn't a midcarder. Tito Santana, Dino Bravo, Ric Martel, and Jim Duggan were midcarders. And at the top end of the midcard (IC level) there were people like Mr. Perfect. Ted was very clearly above IC level and always in contention for the World title until Ric Flair arrived. If the TEW2008 mod I play is to be believed, he was on the same 'big money' contract in 1993 as he was in 1988. Something like $56,000-$65,000 a month. He was an upper mid carder. He was simply one of those wrestlers who didn;t need the title and I'll re word what I said earlier Ted DiBiase was the highest paid wrestler ever not to hold the WWF Championship. The reason he co headlined WM 9 was it was Hogans big return on middle of the show card Tag Team Championship match and 'co main event'. Money Inc were involved in a feud with Brutis Beefcake at the time (Hogans friend) . It was awesome though an awesome match though and certainly get;s over looked when people mention WM 9 I loved Ted Dibaise he was one of my favorite wrestlers and characters ever and his theme song was one of the best ever. He was portrayed throughout his career as not being quite good enough to beat Hogan and hold the WWF Championship (therefore he hired Andre and also tried to buy the championship from Hogan). Then a few years later teamed up with IRS to win the Tag Team Championship. Which means that he was trying to wrestle outside his depth which would have suited the Million Dollar Man character in only the best is good enough for him and everything and everybody has it's price.

In retrospect I would have liked to see a face turn after his investments fail and he loses his money. He could have been known from then on as The Artist Formally Known As The Million Dollar Man ;D

Did the WWF ever mention his dad? I seem to remember Gorilla and Jesse talking about Iron Mike DiBiase at one of the Manias.

Believe it or not, I at first thought the "Million Dollar Man" gimmick was kind of stupid. Not because of the gimmick itself or Dibiase's portryal, both excellent. But Dibiase had been around for a long time and it was well known he was not a millionaire. But his heel character was money hungry, so in that regard it made sense.
