One rival general manager tells Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com that the Rangers have become the favorite to land Cliff Lee. Rotoworld As long as Lee doesn't go to the Yanks/Mets/Braves I'll be happy. Hate to say it... sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=5366254And SportsCenter just a few minutes ago said that the Yanks were close. Believe you me, i'm just as angry as you.

The Yankees didn't take long to remind Lebron James that it is the Yankees that are the original trolls of Pro-Sports.

Lots of reports that the Cliff Lee deal to the Yankees is just about done. Lee for Montero, Adams, and another prospect. Yankees say that will be their best and final offer and Seattle is not talking to any other teams at this point. Yanks do not get a negotiating window for an extension, but they think they'll be able to sign him to a long term deal when the year's over. Other rumor is that Javier Vazquez's trade is imminent.

Word on the block is Lee to NYY for Montero, Adams, and another prospect, followed by a deal of Javy Vasquez for Jayson Werth and possibly a prospect.
Werth walks at the end of the season, Yankees get two high draft picks.
Yankees then turn around and sign Carl Crawford.
They're not breaking any rules, but I'm really, really sick of that organization. Again, though, it's MLB's fault for allowing all this nonsense.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets will now "turn strongly" to acquiring Ted Lilly from the Cubs.
According to Sherman, the Astros still want too much in return for Roy Oswalt and will pay too little of his remaining contract. Lilly, 34, will be a free agent after the 2010 season, so he would strictly be a rental. The Mets won't be alone in their interest.
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com writes that the Marlins will consider trading Ricky Nolasco for the "right offer."

Don't look now, but Aramis Ramirez is up to .195. Since coming off the DL and playing on June 25th, Ramirez is hitting .298/.340/.596 in 50 plate appearances. He's 14-47 with 2 doubles, 4 HR, and 8 RBI.
He's now 44-226 on the year, so he'll be exactly at .200 for the year if he goes 2-4 against Barbara Billingsley tonight.

Baseball America produced a midseason top prospects list. 3. Desmond Jennings, of, Rays (Triple-A Durham) 4. Jeremy Hellickson, rhp, Rays (Triple-A Durham) These two, along with Wade Davis and Jeff Niemann, are the primary reason why I think the Rays will be a formidable team for years to come. All signs indicate that they are going to lose Carl Crawford to free agency during the off-season, as they simply won't be able to match or top the offers that he will inevitably get from the Yankees, Cubs, Phillies, Mets or Red Sox. However, scouts have pointed to Desmond Jennings as the heir apparent to Crawford. They say that his combination of speed, defense and power makes him a carbon copy of Crawford, and that Jennings is a guy who could step right into Crawford's spot in left field and immediately produce. Hellickson, Davis and Niemann are all three solid young pitchers who will be able to form the core of a rotation that will be solid for the next few years. Combine the pitching that they have with young players like Jennings, Evan Longoria, B.J. Upton and John Jaso, I think the Rays have a brighter future than the Yankees or Red Sox. A few weeks back I said that the Rays were my pick to win the World Series, as they simply have it all: speed, defense, starting pitching, relief pitching, power and guys who can simply get on base. There are no holes on that roster from 1-25. It's just too bad that their fans don't show them any respect until October.

And if the Mets organization weren't bilked by Bernie Madoff, they'd be in the thick of the above proceedings as well. Also seems like the M's are backing out because of Adams, which is good. It keeps a highly-touted prospect in a position of need in the Yankee system and it keeps the unfair advantage crowd at bay... well, for now. It's my belief that the Yanks are trying to steal LeBron's thunder with these trade notions. I'd wait for Lee in the offseason so the bitching can really begin. Furthermore, the Yanks pitching is the best it's been all season. Unless they're going to hurry up and put Hughes in the bullpen (An unflattering move to say the least.), they really don't need Lee.

Can't say I'm upset. Hopefully the Reds are still in this race. Dragging Lee back to the National League might be the difference between Wildcard and World Series.

It'd be funny to see if the M's could fleece all of the Phillies' prospects to just get Cliff Lee for a couple months. Of course, Halladay and Lee would be akin to Randy and the Fat Slob in '01.

as long as he doesn't go to the yanks or anyone in the nl east i'll be happy Braves won't go after Lee, sure he's great but we have other places to sure up rather that starting pitching. Paying for a 3 month rental on Lee, when SP is one of our strengths just wouldn't be worth it. Unless they are literally going to go all out for Bobby's last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kenny Williams was dangling Beckham and Daniel Hudson. Hell, once Teahan is healthy in a few weeks, either Beckham gets sent down or Andruw Jones gets released.
And BRV, the Cubs won't have anything to do with Carl Crawford. They still have Soriano locked up to play left field through 2014, Marlon Byrd in center field through 2012, and five more years of team control of Tyler Colvin in right field.
2009 first round pick Brett Jackson is a lefty-batting center fielder who turns 22 in a few weeks. He hit .316/.420/.517 at high-A Daytona in 67 games and, since being promoted to Double-A, has hit .356/.453/.578 in a dozen games. He has 23 doubles, 8 triples and 8 homers combined with 45 RBI. LF Ty Wright was recently promoted from Double A to Triple A, and RF Brandon Guyer is doing alright at Double A as well.
Given Fukudome's contract (about $14.5m in 2011), the Cubs probably are more interested in a Marlon Byrd-like discount deal to be the short side of a platoon in RF next season. Crawford can get his payday in the Eastern Divisions or Los Angeles (Manny's a free agent, no? "CRAWFORDWOOD" on the wall at Chavez Ravine?)
The only position the Cubs will really be looking at in free agency or via off-season trade is corner infield, probably first base. They don't really have anyone ready to step up from the minors at either position just yet, unless they'd consider a one-year stop gap like Micah Hoffpauir or Bryan LaHair, who likely could provide a .260/.330/.440 with 20 HR and 60 RBI. Marquez Smith, a 3B who played with Colvin at Clemson, is hitting for average at Triple A this season but hasn't shown the power he had developed in the lower minors in previous years. His overall season line of .256/.347/.448 (.281/.369/.453 at Triple A) might get him a look this September and a shot at a spot in 2011, though.
Overall the Cubs will be looking to shed some older payroll so that they can begin in earnest turning their roster into a home-grown one.

"Fukudome's contract (about $14.5m in 2011)"
Shouldn't he be paying the Cubs at this point? What a stupid, stupid contract.
