I was curious if anyone has ever heard of a crowd at a wrestling event getting so out of control that a riot broke out?

I'm sure minor stuff happened in the "old days" when kayfabe was in full effect probably.. someone could probably give you specific examples.

There wasn't a full riot, but there was a house show around late '96 I believe it was, someone throw a bottle at Shawn Michaels. He got mad. Show was concelled. All went home not happy.
And even though I was there, and sure, the show may have just barely started, but, I was laughing my head off.

Oh yeah, that's right, a house show right at Lil Rock wasn't it? I remember the footage on the news of the ring just being littered with garbage.. I remember thinking yup WWF won't be in Arkansas again.. n they weren't for a LOOOONG time.

Yup, that's the one Slim. Shawn didn't even have his match. In fact, there was only like 2 matches before hand.

I left early an ECW event in Staten Island, NY, and the next day it was in the local paper that multiple police cars had to break up a riot caused by/involving the Dudley Boys

I vaguely remember hearing about a riot in MSG in the 50s or 60s (probably 60s). I'm not sure but the names Carpentier and the Graham Brothers pop in my head. That's not right, but that's what's in my head. That riot woulda been a hoot.
Cornette always tells stories about riots or near riots breaking out in Memphis and in Mid-South.
I've heard quite a few stories about Puerto Rican riots as well. None of them I can remember though.
Oh, and there was the worked riot at ROH's 1st Anniversary Show.

In ECW when almost every fan in "ECW Arena" tossed their chair into the ring. Not really a riot, but definitely an out of control situation.

I saw a Rey Myesterio vs. Konnan fight once where the mexican fans just started throwing chairs after the match (not really sure why, wondering if this occured after Rey was unmasked). It was actually pretty scary, they were really out of control.
Also, I've seen one or two ROH 'riots' on my DVDs, but some of those are kayfabe (I.E. the locker room empties out, and there are brawls between wrestlers spilling outside) and a few where some fans started to try and jump the rail and start fights. Cue Samoa Joe, who comes out and takes down a guy twice as tall as he is with a simple judo throw, and everyone calms down.
Bottom line: don't f*** with Samoa Joe-ah.

Someone mentioned, maybe destrucity, that they were at an event, I think an ECW event that got, "too hot" I think it was the Dudley Boys thing he was referring too. That's unreal though, to think of heels being so effective that they actually incite a crowd to riot.

The Dudleys must have been really good at inducing riots, because when ECW came to New Orleans(Westwego to be more specific) the Dudleys damn near started a riot. The specific comment that got people fired up was this.
Mother and son sitting in first row. Dudleys are badmouthing everyone along with Joel Gertner. The son stands up and gives them the finger which of course is not all that unusual. Gertner looks at the son(about 17 years old) and asks if that was his "mommy" who brough him to the show. The kid wasn't ashamed that his mother was with him and nods his head. Bubba Ray grabs the mic from Gertner and looks at the mother and says.."so this is the slimy little piece of sh.....that came rolling out of your vanerial disease infested "c word". You must be so proud. Kid throws a bottle of something at Bubba Ray. Bubba Ray calls for security to throw him out. Then Bubba Ray gets back on the mic and asks "is there anyone else stupid enough to try throwing stuff at me again". 3 seconds later Bubba Ray is soaked with beer and fans are having to be held back by security. The results..a soaked Bubba Ray, and about 10 fans thrown out giving me ring side seats for the rest of the night. The funniest part was when one of the fans that was thrown out came back in through the loading dock area(apparantly he was familiar with the building) and tried to get to the ring. I remember at all the ECW shows, security almost outnumbered the number of fans. I wonder why:)

Two words: Puerto Rico. Kayfab is still going so strong down there today that sometimes it gets so bad police are involved. It was so bad that at one show the Sheepherders (Luke and Butch, aka the Bushwackers) had to barricade themselves in the locker room until they got bailed out by another wrestler. I've heard stories that one of their top heels down there carries a gun that he fires in the air to disperse the crowd so he can get to his ride from the show. I think the Sheepherder's said it best when they said they "survived" Puerto Rico. Tell ya the truth, the promoters couldn't pay me enough to work heel down there. At one show here in the US of A, "Classy" Freddie Blassie lost a new car when an angry mob left the arena, flipped it over, and set it afire. This was back when he was doing the "Vampire" filed teeth gimmick, I think.

I even suspect some of the wrestlers there take it too seriously: the death of Frank "Bruiser Brody" Goodish being a sad example. Rumors still float about Eddie Graham's death there being anything but natural... At times, and in certain parts of the island: PR is a pretty lawless place. I stayed there for two months and was smart enough to be damn sure not to catch a live wrestling show or stop for too long at certain street red lights at night. My buddy carried a straight razor tucked into his sneaker at night. It was a weird time.

Am I right in thinking that in the 70's or 80's, Freddie Blassie got shot at? Or am I making that up?

I thought it was earlier? I'll have to re-read his book to figure it out. But I do remember that he got acid poured onto him on his way to a match once. I would of loved to go back in time to see how wrestling was back then to envoke a reaction such as THAT. You know you are hated when ACID is dumped onto you, especially in the height of kayfabe!

Didn't Roddy Pipper cause a riot in Mexico, by singing the wrong national athem, or something?
Very hazy ut sure I read it somewhere once

The Piper story may be the one here: board.deathvalleydriver.com/index.php?showtopic=32357One of the greatest angles of all time was in the Portland teritory where Roddy Piper had insulted the Hispanic/Mexican fans (who made up most of the audience) to the point that he was ordered to go on television the next week to apologize. Piper goes on the next week and does a sit down, heartfelt monologue where he apologizes profusely and says that sometimes he gets carried away and that deep down he really does like the Mexican fans and appreciates their business and support to the territory. As a show of respect, Piper wants to play the Mexican national anthem at the next big show in Portland to make it up to the fans that he insulted. This is a HUGE deal to the Hispanics/Mexican fans, and they sell the arena out to see this and now think of Piper as a not so bad guy after all. In the main event slot of the show, Piper walks to the ring, props up his bagpipes and prepares himself as all of the Hispanic fans in the audience take their hats off and cover their hearts. Piper lifts the bagpipe to his mouth and busts out with LA-CUCA-ROCHA inciting a pretty much full scale riot in the arena and he has to literally run for her life because security was so lots of manurety. It was GOLD.
