There is a chapter in "Whatever Happened to Gorgeous George?", detailing ridiculous depression era matches, such as ice cream matches and lots of mud matches. However, in terms of gimmicks, if you don't count the Angels, I guess Gorgeous George may have been the first gimmick... though someone's bound to prove me wrong here and uncover an evil Czarist or something

I'm sure theres been evil foreign guys forever. I need to find more info on the ice cream match. That sounds like money to me.

I do know that there were berry bowls and molasses matches in the 30s, too.
And that the mud match was originally the gimmick of Gama Singh, a fantastic Indian wrestler. For US audiences, the amount of water in the mud was upped, resulting in the sloppy mud match.
Can't find my copy of the book right now, so I'm going to try and find it later.
