How about we each make a list of the stand up types today?
I'll start with the Comedy Central types:
1. Guy complaining about his marriage. Usually fat. Tries to be "edgy"
2. Guy talks and mocks races. Usually mocks own race the most.
3. Single Girl complaining about being single. Says "hot" stuff or "guy" stuff, like "I go drinking, do you guys go drinking?"
4. Guy with guitar that makes "funny songs".
5. Weird Guy. Tells absurd jokes and stories with strange endings. Usually pretty funny.
6. etc.

Guy with accent whose material consists mostly of how funny his accent is.

Woman in her 30s who is a "trainwreck". Constantly talks about how easy it is to get with her, and how she hates her family and vice versa. Things like that. Like nearly all of woman comedians on TV fall into this category. 4. Guy with guitar that makes "funny songs" I hate this one. Or well, pretty much all comedians who use anything other then a mic for most of their act. Singing, or using a puppet, or whatever doesn't make your mediocre material any better...

The crutch comedian. They rely on their race, weight, sexual orientation, disability, or miscellaneous other thing for at lest 70% of their act. See Ralphie May, George Lopez, Gabriel Iglesias, ANT.

7. The Master of them all I fully agree. George is big influence on my life in general. The thing is, that out of the comedians mentioned nobody mentioned what George did, yea it was mostly observational, but there was a point to what he said, it made sense at the end of it all, and the Comedy Central types that were mentioned don't do that. You don't have to always make a point, but a lot of comics today seem "empty"

Singing can be good if it's done right, it's just a lot of guys just don't, guys like Bill Bailey and Tim Minchin are fantastic comedy songwriters.

I read both of these and immediately thought of Dat Phan.

There are the "mother comedians" who have routines about their supposed cute bratty kids and doofus husbands. You've seen one, you've seen them all.
George Carlin existed in a whole other plane of existence. The guy was a genius.

Carlin is the greatest. It's like he said...'I'm a guy who reminds you of funny stuff that you forgot to laugh at the first time. Like...they make a disposable douche. WHO'D WANNA KEEP IT!?'

I dunno. Mitch Hedberg early on in his career relied on an upright bass player who played in the background while he told jokes, it didn't have much to do with his act at all really, but was rather a distraction from his own stage fright. Does that count as a crutch?

I think most will agree with me that there are two types of comedians:
1: George Carlin
2: Everyone else.
