I read somewhere, not sure where, Backlund had no idea Skaaland was going to throw the towel in. How long did he stay afterward? Because it could partly explain him not being involved with the promotion for a decade. He was with the WWF for 8 months following the loss to Sheik

He was with the WWF for 8 months following the loss to Sheik Cool, thank you. I was going to say either this wasn't true or there weren't very many hard feelings. The towel throw was done to protect Backlund one way or the other. Since Hulk was going to demolish Shiek to get the title, he couldn't defeat Backlund clean because they still had dreams of a Hogan vs. Backlund match for the title to pass the torch. So the towel throw was done. I wish I could remember who's book I read Backlund didn't know about the towel finish though...it's somewhere.

At first, I thought this implied that he was "screwed" a la Bret, and subsequently wondered why no one had ever drawn comparisons between the two. Quite quickly though, (and it became utterly obvious when I finally saw the match), I wised up to the fact that he knew he was dropping the belt, just some how misled or misinformed about the finish. It's totally irrelevant over 25 years later, but still, food for thought.
