This is something I've wondered for awhile. It seems that Rey Mysterio is quite possibly the most despised wrestler around this board, for any number of reasons. He's injury-prone and hurts other guys. He's given a push due to being over with "the kids". He's beaten CM Punk on several occasions, etc, etc.
The thing that baffles me is this: I could see people hating what he is now...but I NEVER see anyone bring up what he used to be. From 1995-1997, he was the most exciting wrestler around. He's one of the few guys that when he made his mainstream debut was doing things that had never been done in this country. Then when he first debuted on Smackdown in 2002, he was an integral part of the much-loved Smackdown 6. But I can't recall a single statement to the effect of "I used to be a big fan of Rey's, but he's really slowed down lately and should maybe just retire soon." It's always "Get the injury midget off TV RRAAAGGHH!!!"
So why does this happen? Why does Rey get absolutely no credit for his earlier brilliance in the ring? When did everyone turn so fervently against him? Is he just a symbol of the dreaded PG Era? Has he slowed down so much that people have forgotten how great he was, like when Ken Griffey was on the Reds? WHY? I want answers now, or I want them eventually....

Because he keeps beating Punk. I can't remember there being this much vitriol towards him until he made Punk his whipping boy. It snowballed from there.

I hate the guy because when he was at the hotel I work at there were some kids in the lobby that reconized him and asked for a quick picture and just pushed his way through them and didn't even aknowledge them. For a guy who has a huge fan base of kids and is supossed to love his fans he was quite an ass to them. Then I was outside giving him, Matt and MVP some directions and Matt asked him where he went and he said he went outside because he didn't want to be bothered by the kids. Matt and M MVP on the other hand took time to pose for pictures, answer questons and sign autographs.
This was during the Matt and MNP series of challanges so MVP was heel.

Because we've heard all the same stuff before. I did used to be a fan of mysterio, but now every single match he's in he's apparently "the underdog". All the time, "I'm the underdog, blah, blah, blah.""I do this for my people blaH,BLAH,BLAH." And the fact that they 619 has totally lost it's credibilty all leads up to the fact that I'm bored with Rey. If he turns heel or does some new angles, It'll be fine. But right now, it's kind of boring and repetitive.

Because frankly, I don't see why me being a fan of his before should have to qualify every statement I make about him now. His act is done with me. He's this tiny dude beating every last f***ing person they put in front of him. He beat Swagger on SD and I just rolled my eyes and skipped ahead. He's like John Cena, only TINY. I can't buy him beating some of these people. When he's booked against Jericho, or someone like that who he can realistically perform against, I dig it. But when he was beating Kane, now Swagger, all those times I can't buy that. I couldn't buy it in WCW.
Couple that with him being an awful promo, and him getting a push I have trouble accepting for someone as huge as John Cena, I can never like him or get behind him. He gets on my nerves far too much.

Because right now I don't like him. When his career is over, I'll speak of him in the retrospective sense (he was good for a long time, even though he sucked at the end), but for now, I'm speaking of him in the moment.

He is the size of a 12 year old and they book him as a credible threat to guys like the Undertaker where the matches just look silly. Its fine to put him with cruiserweights even then he looks really small. Even in his promos his voice sounds like it hasn't changed yet it always makes me laugh to hear him talk tough. As a Luchadore he worked as a special attraction He just doesn't belong as a main eventer. Plus his jail tatoos look really stupid.

I don't really hate him, I just don't care about him (at least not as much as I did about 4 or 5 years ago). It seems like he does basically the same things in every feud he is in. They should put him in more matches with people closer to his size. His matches with people like Tyson Kidd or Chris Jericho are still very good, but we have seen everything that he can do against larger opponents like Mike Knox and Jack Swagger. Rey was hated a lot before the feud with CM Punk, but some people think that he is only disliked because he kept beating him. It just became more noticeable after the Dolph Ziggler story and the back to back injuries his knee braces caused. EDIT: I just remembered about this. This almost enough to make me hate him.

I used to be a fan of Mysterio but he has just been getting on my nerves, its the same stuff over and over and over, promos are boring, 619 harrah! underdog yadda yadda.... im a midgy and a highflyer, I can take on whoever! and hes been complaining to Vince that if he doesnt get his way he will quit? wow, he wanted a higher paycheck, he wanted a longer title reign, he didnt want to drop the title to Ziggler so he dropped it to JoMo.... hes been used up to all he has imo... you can only do the underdog thing for so long until it gets boring and you dont even wanna cheer for him anymore.

Because he wins all the f***ing time, yet he's still presented as the "underdog".

I just don't buy it anymore. I can't buy a 5'6 dude with a weak offense that can constantly beat the top stars. Lucha is something I can only take in small doses, hence why I don't follow Chikara so much. Watching Mysterio wrestle every week just gets grating, especially when he constantly goes over one of my favorite guys in WWE.

I first noticed it when he won the World Title. It was obviously done to capitalized on the death of Eddie Guererro and make for a "feel good" Mania moment. And it worked, for a little while. Eddie's death was still fresh in our minds and we wanted good to happen out of it. However, once he started defending the belt, the flaws with having him as champion became clear. His promo skills weren't very good, and his matches and angles were all based on the repetitive "I'm big, you're small" angle. The shine came off the apple pretty quick when he delivered one snoozer of a feud after another.
Rey's career at this point has gone from stealing the show with other cruiserweights, to being the constant underdog against bigger guys who can't work at his speed.
Also, the fact that he is getting worn out could factor into it. When you're known as a high spot cruiserweight, toning down your style only serves to highlight your weaknesses. Rey was great when his matches were so fast you didn't have time to sit there and think "Why the hell does everyone fall into the ropes like that only in Rey Mysterio maches?" or "Why don't they prepare for it and get the hell out of the ropes ASAP? It's not like he doesn't give them plenty of time." It bacame harder to accept Rey beating guys two or three times his size with the 619. You can buy Rey pulling off a flash pin roll up or a fluke victory. But to have every bigger guy lose a pin after a long, drawn out kick to the face and big splash is hard to swallow. Especially after seeing these guys throw Rey around like he was cabbage patch doll.
These are some of the possible reasons I can think of. I don't think there's really one particular reason as to why people hate him, but I can narrow down the time period from when I started noticing the backlash to after he won the World Title. Make of that what you will.

I was never a fan of his. I remember cheering on whoever faced him. I would cheer Dean Malenko in WCW. I cheered Kane when attending a live RAW. I have never liked the guy but hate is a strong word. I do not hate Rey. Does he still have value? Probably. Can that value be used? Yes. Does he need to win every match he's in?

I am still a fan of Rey Mysterio. His promos where he keeps calling himself the master of the 6...1...9 is a little ridiculous, but he usually puts on good matches.
P.S. Against CM Punk, I will always cheer on Punk and boo Mysterio.

He got the best of punk over and over and over. Before that he got some hate, But after the punk feud he is one of the most hated guys on the board.

He's just too small, and all his matches are the same. Every match he has, goes like this: Rey vs. monster; Monster beats on Rey; Rey makes a comeback using his superior speed to the big, slow monster; Rey goes for the 619, but the monsters reverses; Rey goes for it again, hits it, and wins the match.

I loved his work in WCW but now, his matches are boring, and I am sick to death of him always being called an underdog. Underdog's don't win every match they're in!
If I never see another Mysterio match again I wouldn't care less.
