DC announced a bunch of restructuring today and in that announcement, they said that the Wildstorm imprint is getting shut down. That surprised me. Wonder if the books currently there will fall under the DC banner or are all getting cancelled from what I understand, they're ending the Wildstorm Universe titles for now. this is actually probably a good thing because the World's End stuff gutted the line of what made it interesting in the first place. it was a cool idea for a miniseries, and it DID make sense as a logical endpoint for the Wildstorm U, but the problem was that it really painted the writers into a corner. they couldn't use The Authority as the assholes who run everything if everything was ruined. they couldn't use the Wildcats or Stormwatch if there was no world left for them to try (and fail sometimes) to protect. they couldn't have a series like Welcome to Tranquility if the Tranquility community was nuked from orbit. and they certainly couldn't have something like Planetary to investigate the impossible if all that stuff had been destroyed. the Wildstorm earth exists as part of the 52 (earth 50 I believe) so I would imagine thpse characters can get a slight reboot to a pre-World's End setting and be interesting again some day. it'll just take some awesome writers to come around who like the characters and do what guys like Warren Ellis and Joe Casey did to make it an awesome universe again.

well I don't read the Wildstorm U stuff that much anyway. I'll miss all the various miniseries they put out (i.e. the X-Files/30 Days of Night crossover happening now)

I don't know what Kurt Busiek's plans for Astro City are, but would this shut-down affect any of that, since Astro City is technically under the Wildstorm banner?

I've been really having the itch lately to pick up a couple comics. I'm not sure where to start but I was wondering if you guys could name me a few to check out.

They have the Marvel family set up on Earth 5 as well, apparently new stories with those characters will be from that Earth and Billy and Mary wont be getting their powers back on main DC Earth. That makes Legion sad. Not me. I prefer the Marvels on their own Earth.

Ah, well, Secret Six just started the "6by6" story arc, so that might be a good place to jump on, although I'd recommend grabbing the last arc "Cat's In The Cradle", too, since it provides a ton of background on why things are happening. As for Secret Avengers, we're literally only 4 issues in, which comprises the whole first arc, and the newest one's coming out this week.

If you're willing to commit to shelling out 60$ American than go for the Marvel Digital Comics service gives you a huge constantly updated library which you can read anytime your on your computer for a year.

My top reads right now are Thanos Imperative, Thunderbolts and Avengers Academy. Of the three, Academy is probably the most accessable to new readers, and it's only about 3 issues in so far.

It's a terrible terrible shame that Cosmic Marvel appears to be dead after the event. You could start with Thunderbolts from issue 144 (new direction and new team). Secret Six 19-22 (miss out 23 and 24) jump back in for 25 and you should be sorted. Red Robin is a good read, you can pick up from 13 and be up to speed. Avengers Academy is the best Avengers title out there at the moment imo, only 4 issues in. Secret Avengers is second but the treatment of Nova annoyed me. There are other titles that are a few too many in to catch up easy, like Justice League: Gen Lost, Booster Gold and Captain America. Thor starts today with a new creative team (615) and might be worth it. Also, never ever be afraid to talk to the guys in your local comic shop and explain you're new and want some decent easy access titles. It's in their best interest to help you out. And it's their job.

And Fantastic Four was awesome this week as well. It isn't all that user friendly at all, but it's just plain awesome this week.

Also, kickassJP, if you're up to doing quite a lot of back reading, i would recommend Fables, though be warned, it's at issue 98 now and storylines usually fold over 30 issues or so. but it's brilliant.
Which phase are you in? New readers start out with DC/Marvel but as you read more comics, you tend to gravitate to Vertigo, which has some of the best comic book stuff being written, sadly not selling as much as the big 2.

Avengers Academy has surprised the hell out of me. I was really optimistic about it, but mostly because I knew it would have Speedball(My favorite Marvel character) involved. I was reading mostly for him. But in the course of four issues, it's got me hooked. Finesse is probably the best character Marvel's introduced in a while.

Also, I hate double posting, but it deserves mention, Future Stark's timeline in this month's Avengers has been of great interest to me. Some of the entries like "Drumm of Revenge", "Academy Traitor", Nova Antiquus, and "THREE!" intrigue me. I can't wait to see where Marvel's going, and if any of these things play out.

Consantine is a very hard character to get into because there's been so many different writers over the years. in general, Jamie Delano's original work with the character, along with Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis' takes are generally the best. Mke Carey's run was pretty good too.
