Just thought this essay was kind of funny, I noticed it as I was looking through some old files on my computer. Im a pretty big Rock fan now, so its especially funny to read. Take it away, ten years younger Rick Mad:
Overrated Person: The Rock
The World Wrestling Federation wrestler, The Rock, is the most overrated person I can think of. Everyone likes him, and I have no idea why. He isn’t a good wrestler, and the only reason he is popular is because he is good on the mic.
Rock began his WWF career in 1996, as Rocky Maivea. He was popular at first but the fans soon got tired of him. They realized he wasn’t good so booed him and he became a heel, or “bad guy”. He stayed a mid card wrestler then.
He started using his annoying catchphrases, the Corporate Eyebrow, and the Corporate Elbow. They were named this because he was in The Corporation at the time. The fans started to like him again, not based on his wrestling ability but on his catchphrases. He renamed himself The Rock, and soon renamed his move the Peoples Elbow and his eyebrow the Peoples Eyebrow, and was known as the Peoples Champion. The name “Peoples Champion” was stolen from WCWs (World Championship Wrestling) Diamond Dallas Page, and before that, the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes. With the fans firmly behind him he is currently a 5 time WWF Champion, which he did in 4 years, and didn’t really deserve any of them. He has won more World Titles then great wrestlers ever will in their whole career. People like Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Tazz, or Raven deserve to be champion. Not him.
One reason for him being so overrated is that WWF pushed him too fast. (Push means to give him more TV time, or just make him more known among the fans) He won the WWF Intercontinental (IC) Title in about 3 months, and has held 2 IC Titles, 2 Tag Titles with Mankind, and 5 World Titles, all in 4 years. That’s WAY too fast. Greats like Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, or Bret Hart haven’t won that many titles, and WWF has Rock do it in 4 years.
I think he is just about the worst wrestler in WWF today. The only moves his uses regularly are the DDT, Spinebuster, and his finisher, the Rock Bottom. He also uses his Peoples Elbow, but that isn’t a good move since it isn’t believable someone would just lay down for about 45 seconds and not be able to move away while he does all of his posing. He sometimes uses a Sharpshooter, a submission move, which is a move that Bret Hart invented and made famous, so you could say he stole that too.
He is considered too important by WWF to get hurt, so some of the more dangerous moves are not allowed to be done to him, or must be done different. Wrestlers like HHH or Undertaker can’t do good matches against him because they aren’t allowed to do their moves.
In conclusion The Rock will only get better as time goes by, and in a few years could easily be one of the best. But as of now he doesn’t deserve to be where he is, and only got there because of his mic skills, while other great wrestlers struggle up the ladder to success.
