"CROMARTIE HIGH - THE MOVIE"Story: a young man enroles with a friend to a school for toughs, only his friend fails to pass the entrance exam. The young man tries to make the school and it's students a better place, but there is much wackieness and strange goings-on... Based on a popular manga series, which may or may not have had a plot. When the creator was approached by the film's producers about the making of this movie, he told them to do whatever they wanted. What they did was not use any of the manga as any kind of reference for this. The Good: - YOSHIHIRO TAKAYAMA! That's right, the guy who was 1/2 of one of the most increible MMA fights is in this as a student (who looks twice the age of the rest of the students). - Mekazawa. The school's lone robot student. No explanation. - The humour. Lots of it is off-the-wall, oddball humour, like the 'non-story' segments of "Family Guy". The Bad: - The episodic nature of the movie means that there really isn't one main plot, just a couple of short stories that are strung together, with very little between them except for common characters. Sense. This movie makes none. If you like the original material, this may be your cup of tea, or it may make you mad because they don't follow it. (Shin'ya Hashimoto has a small cameo as Hustle King!) Cannot recommend.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Starring: Logan Lerman, Emma Waston, Ezra Miller Plot: Charlie (Lerman) is a socially awkward boy who is starting high school. He meets two Sam (Watson) and Patrick (Miller), who become close friends. We watch Charlie's transition into high school and learn a great deal about him along the way. Thoughts: The acting is great. There are moments that are funny, moments that are heartwarming, and moments that are positively gut-wrenching. My only criticism is that sometimes characters same lines that seem very forced, like they are trying to be quotable that don't feel natural. Very mature for a movie set in high school, but one of the best dramatic high school movies I've seen. Recommendation: Definitely see it!

ONCE IN A LIFETIME: THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE NEW YORK COSMOSPlot: A look back at one of the more curious fads in American professional sports, the sudden rise and precipitous fall of the North American Soccer League, spanning its existence 1968-1984, as seen through the experience of its most famous club, the New York Cosmos. The NASL made very little impact in the US, where soccer had virtually no following, until in 1975 the New York Cosmos succeeded in signing the most famous player in the world, Pele. Attendence for Cosmos games exploded, outdrawing even the New York Giants and New York Jets of the NFL, to where exhibition games in Seattle were drawing huge crowds, and when Pele announced his retirement in 1977 his final game drew the biggest crowd to ever see a soccer game in the US. His retirement from the game began a slow but steady decline for the NASL as money issues for the league and the spending practices of the Cosmos became a running controversy. Verdict: I saw some of this in a hotel room when I was in San Francisco last month and I wanted to watch the whole thing, and I did recently. This is a really good look at soccer rising in the United States and how people knew nothing about it and it became a nationwide phenomenon, enough that Cosmos games sold out stadiums. Also, signed a few foreign players, particularly Pelé. However, it was later revealed that the NASL (North American Soccer League) fell from grace after a while. I highly recommend it, especially to soccer fans.

"THE ENTITY"Story: single mother is attacked and sexually assaulted by an invisible assailant. She goes to see a psychiatrist, who believes that she is imagining the attacks because of her past abuse, but she meets with a team of parapsychologists who believe in her... which leads to a giant research project to find what "it" is. Based on a true story... The Good: - Great cast all around. Barbara Hershey is very believable as a woman coming apart, and Ron Silver nails it as a self-assured psychiatrist who believes the research is doing more harm than good. Actually, everyone in this is good, except for the two little girls, but it's so tough to find good actors that young. - Effects. Not a lot of over-the-top weirdness going on here (except for the end... see below). There's a couple of scenes of the main character being touched by... something... that are just really creepy. The small effects are the best here. The Bad: - "Based on a true story"... actually, based on a work of fiction that was loosely based on a reported true story. As it turns out, the author of the book asked the researchers "what would you have wanted to do, if you had the budget?", and then uses that as the end. They build fake house as a giant trap with frozen helium to trap whatever this is in ice so they can study it... I'm sorry, but that crossed the line of plausible for me. It went from an interesting study to just plain dumb SF. - Length/pacing. It's a long movie, just over 2 hours, and it's pretty dry going. It is interesting to see the psychiatric angle of this, but it takes it's time. Could have been shorter. The Ugly: - Implied incest, or at least the implication that this is the cause of it. Just... ick. Better reputation than it deserved. Dry watching, crazy ending. Cannot recommend.

"SHOCK" (1946)This is movie #37 (Disc 10, Side 1, Movie 1) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: young woman sees a murder, goes into shock. Her husband finds her, calls a doctor who recommends a well-known psychiatrist... who turns out to be the murderer. Teh psychiatrist takes her case and tries to cover her story up, eventually having to try and kill her. Dated but not bad. Vincent Price is especially good, cool but with his frayed edges starting to show, breaking down with the morality of his deceit. He's the best part of this. Not exactly the best portrait of psychiatry here, but considering the plot it is understandable. Verdict: good Good: 12 Meh: 14 Trash: 11

"THE STUFF"Story: industrial spy "Mo" Rutherford is hired to find the recipe of The Stuff, the snack craze sweeping the nation. He finds that The Stuff is addictive, malevolent... and sentient. The ooze is taking control of it's eaters, using it's mind control to spread The Stuff across the nation before it completely consumes the consumers. Mo finds a young boy who watched his family become obsessed with The Stuff, an advertising exec who helped make the commercials for The Stuff, and a once-famous cookie mogul, and with the help of a right-wing private army he fights to stop The Stuff. Great B-movie story from Larry Cohen ("It's Alive", "Cellular", and a whole bunch more). The whole idea of an intelligent alien blob that eats you away from inside is unsettling. It made me start thinking about some of the junk food that I eat, and some of the additives and preservatives and unpronouncable crap that they put in it... what is it doing to me? Anyways, it's a great STORY, but boy is this bad execution. The movie felt like it was edited with a weed-whacker, with scenes abruptly ending and jumping right into another. There's rumours of up to 30 minutes being cut from the movie... I believe it, because it feels like it was sliced to bits and put back together with duct tape. Another minus to the movie is the acting, especially from lead Michael Moriarty ("Law & Order"). He has this bizarre Texan accent that comes and goes, he plays a tough guy (he looks so awkward throwing a punch), and his dialogue is bordering on insane (I wonder if he was allowed to ad-lib?). It's like he was told that the movie was a comedy. The supporting cast does little better. The young boy can't act, Paul Sorvino (again, "Law & Order") tries to be serious but is just ridiculous as the right-wing army 'general', and the woman is just there. The only actor who looks like he fits is Garrett Morris ("SNL") as "Chocolate Chip" Charlie, and that's just because I love seeing him in anything. On the plus side, however, are the special effects of the Stuff. The way they simulate the Stuff moving is quite nicely done, especially the one scene where it 'sprays' up and plasters a victim to the wall and ceiling (that scene used the same 'spinning room' set from "A Nightmare on Elm Street"). Great effects on a budget. So, I'm torn. It's a great story and worth seeing because of the story, but it's so badly told that it's hard to recommend. Watch if you can, but be warned.

"TRACK OF THE MOON BEAST"This is movie #38 (Disc 10, Side 1, Movie 2) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: Anthropologist Hunky McShirtless falls for news photographer Legs Cannotact and gets hit in the head with a meteorite, while his friend/college professor/Native American Johnny Longbone help the police find a giant lizard monster that attacks during the night. Connection? Yep! Famously featured on "Mystery Science Theatre 3000", this one is the un-MST3K'd version, just the movie by itself... and it is hilariously bad. While Gregorio Sala is a bunch of fun as Professor Salinas (and yes, his nickname in the movie is "Johnny Longbow"), the other two leads are terrible. The woman reads with no emotion until she has to scream at something, and several times looks like she spent some serious time in Tommy Chong's van, while the guy's best acting move is removing his shirt. The effects are bad (obvious rubber suit for the lizard man, plus low-end meteor storm and laughable 'zoom' to a photo of the Moon). The music is bad (especially the backup 'singer' for the folk song "California Lady"). The direction, the photography... the whole bad movie is bad. The best thing about this movie is the poster. Look at that thing! It looks like it just fell out of Disney's "Fantasia"! It's so bad that it must be seen to be dis-believed. So, it gets the lowest rating but you gotta see this. (And no, I haven't seen the MST3K version. Yet.) Verdict: Trash Good: 12 Meh: 14 Trash: 12 Side note: This was co-written by Bill Finger, co-creator/writer of the Batman, Green Lantern and a whole bunch more.

"THE GHOST" (1963)This is movie #39 (Disc 10, Side 2, Movie 1) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: rich old man believes his wife is having an affair with his doctor. Wife convinces doctor to kill old man for his money so they can be together. After he is buried, they search for the fortune hidden in the mansion, and begin to experience strange activity. Is the old man back from the grave, or is it the doctor trying to drive her crazy, or is it her imagination? Gothic horror from Italy, but set in Scotland in the early 1900's. Very moody, great visuals, and a very haunting tune that gets replayed through the movie. The acting is what you would expect from a movie of this time period from Italy, a little over-the-top but it fits the movie well. Barbara Steele is... OK. I found her inconsistent, some times sleep-walking through a scene, others believable on the edge of madness. I also don't find her to be a gorgeous as others find, but there's is something about her eyes... her eyes are haunting and she knows how to use them. Pretty good movie, but it must have come from a bad source because sometimes the movie jumps in places and there's scratches on the screen. Still, nice. Verdict: Good Good: 13 Meh: 14 Trash: 12

"IRON SKY"Story: in 2018, a new NASA space mission accidently discovers that after WW2, the Nazis relocated to the Moon to gather their forces and attempt to retake the Earth. Using technology from the NASA mission, the Nazis modify their flyign saucer and go to Earth to get more tech. One good-hearted Nazi schoolteacher teams with the surviving US astronaut (actually an African-American male model who was sent on the mission because of good PR) to stop the mission. I was expecting this to be a car wreck, and I actually enjoyed it. Everything in this looks like it belongs in a "_____ Movie" script: Sarah Palin as President of the USA (oddly, she's never named), the NASA mission as PR, the African-American model who is 'albinized', everything with the UN, it all screams crappy parody. But it feels like the producers took all of these elements and did their best to make it a serious movie. Everything that felt like it should have beena punchline for a bad joke is played like it's a serious point... which actually made it funnier. Some of it was groan-inducing, but it was a lot better than expected. And the special effects are incredible. They did not skimp on the flash and bang and it really paid off. Recommended, especially for the special effects.

"JESSE JAMES MEETS FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER"This is movie #40 (Disc 10, Side 2, Movie 2) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: Jesse James and his slow-witted partner Hank are on the run from the law (escaping an ambush in a stagecoach robbery gone wrong) and hold up in a doctor's home near a remote village. But the doctors' home belongs to the grandchildren of Dr. Frankenstein himself, and they want Hank's body to put the artificial brain of the original monster in. It also doesn't help that Dr. Maria Frankenstein also wants Jesse James' body for herself... Bizarre mix of western and monster movie, and it's not really as bad as expected. All of the acting is at least passable, the story does move along at a good pace, and it's filmed well. It's a competent film... but the two genres really do not mesh at all, making watching this a weird experience. Verdict: Meh Good: 13 Meh: 15 Trash: 12

"DR. TARR'S TORTURE DUNGEON"This is movie #41 (Disc 11, Side 1, Movie 1) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: someone visits an out-of-the-way asylum to find information on his father, finds the patients have taken over and tries to escape. With a name like "Dr. Tarr's Torture Dungeon", I was expecting a sleezy Euro-torture flick along the lines of a mid-70's version of "Hostel". This is not that movie. This felt like an art student's attempt to tie the original Edgar Allen Poe story to a stylized retelling of the French Revolution with strange visuals and bizarre (and inappropriate) music and all-out weirdness. Pretentious visuals above storytelling does not a good or 'deep' or interesting movie make. Imagine "Tarsem Singh presents Arkham Asylum, starring Cirque de Soleil", on a budget. Then take two Aspirin and avoid this movie. Possibly the strangest 90 minutes of the DVD set, and definately not worth it... unless you REALLY like weirdness in your movies. Verdict: Trash Good: 13 Meh: 15 Trash: 13

"THE BLOODY BROOD"This is movie #42 (Disc 11, Side 1, Movie 2) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: leader of a group of beatniks decides to kill a messenger for 'kicks'. Victim's brother looks into the death when the police seem lost. Not bad, but not a great film as well. There isn't a that much of a plot here, in that there's not a lot of 'detective' work, just the protagonist sticking his nose in the beatniks' business and finding the truth. What makes the movie a bit of a chore to watch is the beatniks' and their empty philosophy, staring into space and railing against 'the Man'. That actually may have been intentional, to present the lifestyle as an empty one, with nothing to look forward to, and in that respect it works... but that doesn't make it any easier. The one bright spot is Peter Falk ("Columbo") as Nico, the 'leader' of the beatniks. His performance (and his philosophy) has a sharper edge that everyone around him, like he has experienced what the others have only been talking about. So, worth it for his performance but not a must see. Verdict: Meh Good: 13 Meh: 16 Trash: 13

"HOUSE OF THE DEAD" (aka "Alien Zone")This is movie #43 (Disc 11, Side 2, Movie 1) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: taxi drops guy off in the wrong part of town after he visits his mistress, guy ends up in mortuary hearing stories of four 'clients' from the mortician. An anthology film, with four short stories and a 'framing' sequence to hold it together. The common thread through the stories is supposedly 'people falling because of their faults', but the stories are all so slight that you never get a real hold on who they are and what their faults would be. The framing sequence is as bad, with very little explanation of who is behind things and why. It's not badly filmed (definitely on a budget, with several of the sets nothing but bare-bones), it's just such a light script that it doesn't feel like anything. Like it was an outline for a script that never got filled in. An unused colouring book. Verdict: Meh Good: 13 Meh: 17 Trash: 13

"SLASHED DREAMS" (aka "Sunburst")This is movie #44 (Disc 11, Side 2, Movie 2) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: cute college chick and her 'friendzone' best friend go into the countryside to find an old buddy who's dropped out of school to 'get his head together'. They come across a couple of redneck thugs, and she's raped while he's held at knifepoint. Their 'old buddy' helps her try to deal with the rape while 'friendzone' looks for revenge. This movie is more concerned about presenting ideas on 'getting back to nature' and 'finding oneself' than it is about presenting anything exciting, disturbing or vaguely entertaining. There's long, drawn-out periods of this movie where the two main characters are just driving, hiking through the woods, skinny dipping, staring at the stars... all the while the worst 70's flute-wielding light pop music assaults the ears. As for the rape scene... really, it was pretty tame. A PG-rated rape scene. Almost laughably bad. Then, next day, when the missing friend shows up, it's back to lousy pop music while she tries to 'absorb what happened', 'learn to find some good from it', and 'get past it'. It also leads to a pretty funny (read: bad) fight between the best friend and the rednecks, which in the end solved... nothing. Even the characters realize that nothing was resolved with the fight. And the movie just ends. So, wow. The message of this movie seems to be 'if you are raped, just do your best to get past it.' For this alone the movie deserves to be considered crap. Actors... the most recognizable face here is Robert "A Nightmare on Elm Street" Englund as the lost-in-the-woods buddy. The lead actress is Katherine Baumann, who had a small career on TV (the one role I remember her in was as a cheerleader who Henry Blake fell for on the TV series "M*A*S*H"). And one of the redneck rapists (and co-writer of the movie) is James Keach, brother of actor Stacy Keach. Best part of the movie is the appearance of Rudy Vallee as the Harbinger country store owner who warns them not to go into the woods unarmed. They stumble apon him as he singing and talking into a microphone to an audience of no one... a little sureal but easily the most entertaining part. Other than the message, the worst part is the music. OH GOD the music! Ear-bleeding, flute-wielding, sugary-voiced 70's light pop schmaltz music through almost every minute of this movie. Someone must find this music and burn it. So, because of the message and the soundtrack, avoid! Verdict: Trash Good: 13 Meh: 17 Trash: 14

"A BUCKET OF BLOOD"This is movie #45 (Disc 12, Side 1, Movie 1) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: working at a beatnik club, awkward busboy Walter Paisley takes the words of a poet to heart and try to create some great art through sculpture. Accidentally killing his landlord's cat, he covers it with clay and brings it to work as a sculpture. He finds praise... then has to continue working to keep his place in the spotlight... Fantastic short film (only 66 minutes long) that is a great black comedy as well as a scathing look at the beatnik art world (and some great music as well). Dick Miller is hilarious and scary as Walter, a pathetic schlub who just wants to be successful and has found his 'niche', but it involves killing. I also loved the guy who played his boss at the club ( Antony Carbone)... he learns pretty early on about Walter's 'creative process' and tries to keep it quiet (because it'll be bad for business, especially if he loses customers) while trying to steer Walter away from 'real life' figures and into more abstract work. Watching his face in the background while Walter talks to the others is some of the funniest stuff in the movie. Highly recommended, one of the best in this set. Verdict: Good (actually better than Good but I'm sticking to my rankings)Good: 14 Meh: 17 Trash: 14

AKIRA (1988): Considered one of the most influential anime films of all time, and for good reason. Tetsuo and Kaneda are part of the same motorcycle gang in a post-apocolyptic and very dysfunctional Neo-Tokyo. When Tetsuo has an unpleasant encounter with a strange child, he is taken away by government officials, whose expiriments on him unleash a power he soon cannot control. It's up to Tetsuo and others to try to save him before it's too late. The version this reviewer watched was the 2001 Pioneer re-dub, and it is simply amazing, a gripping and well-detailed story that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. (ROCKS/RECOMMENDED) ============================================== LAKE PLACID (1999): What do you get when you take a giant man-eating crocodile, a museum paleontologist (Bridget Fonda), a game warden (Bill Pullman), a sheriff (Brendan Gleeson), a crocodile-loving mythology proffessor (Oliver Platt, who is a total hoot to watch), and the croc's cranky protector (Betty White!) and put them in a script from TV producer David E. Kelley? You get an enjoyably funny monster film with great SFX (while some of it is CGI, there is also a mechanical croc created by the late Stan Winston) and some genuine scares that never goes overboard in any respect. (Rocks/Recommended) ============================================== VARSITY BLUES (1999): Tiring football film takes all the cliches in sports movies and completely overdoes them while making most of the characters rather unlikeable. When backup high school QB Mox (James Van Der Beek) is forced to take the starting job when his friend gets hurt in a game, his life changes, and not neccessarily for the better, thanks in part to the sadistic coach (Jon Voight). A strong soundtrack is not enough to lift this film. (SUCKS/NOT RECOMMENDED)

I have been waiting to watch this and the time has come. It's now time for a review. THE DAYPlot: This film is set in the near future in a post-apocalyptic time with five survivors struggling to get through each day. They are on the move to find food and other survivors as well as a safe place to hold up for a while. They stumble across a dilapidated house in the country, so they check it out when things turn bad. The house is not as safe as they hoped, and there are other people who have morbid uses for them. Will they survive? Verdict: I had been waiting to see this movie and wanted to see it in theaters if it hadn't been only shown in limited locations. Anyway, I bought it recently and got it in the mail today. I finally watched it. Anyway, the movie is decent. Standard post-apocalyptic fare with only a few survivors and dealing with survivalists. It had some decent action and suspense. It avoided most horror tropes, though towards the end, it kind of started to fall off, but it was still good I thought. By the way, despite being distributed by WWE Studios, no wrestlers are in it AT ALL. I recommend it.

"GODZILLA VS. MEGALON"Story: underground nuclear testing moves the residents of Seatopia to attack the surface world with giant monster Megalon. Seatopian spies steal robot Jet Jaguar to held Megalon, but the inventor takes control back and sends Jet Jaguar to bring Godzilla to help save Japan. Jet Jaguar also gains sentience and grows in size to help Godzilla fight Megalon and Gigan (on loan from aliens). So, apparently this started out as a Jet Jaguar movie, with Godzilla written in at the end to boost the box office and help the new character be established. The whole story is pretty weak, with the main focus on the inventor, his friend and his nephew (or was it his son? It's not really clear who they are...) fighting to get control of the robot back, and then the fight. I'm told that many of the special effects were clipped from earlier movies, although there were a few featuring Megalon that I thought were good. The final fight... was fun but pretty bad. The main problem was that the monster didn't really behave like giant monsters. There's a point where Gigan attempts to hold JJ hostage with his hooked arms to JJ's throat. Both teams of monsters use tag team tactics. And, of course, this is the movie with the GODZILLA FLYING DROP KICK!!! Dumb fun. Recommended.

"HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND"This is movie #46 (Disc 12, Side 1, Movie 2) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: dance troupe with their manager on their way to Singapore crash in ocean and wash up on deserted island. Finding a dead scientist in a cabin, they move in and try to survive. Manager is bitten by huge spider and transforms into... something that looked more like a werewolf. Rescuers come, girls party, monster attacks. Badly-made West German film from 1960, redubbed in English and released in the US in 1962. Most of the film is watching the dancers travelling around the island in torn clothing, short skirts, dancing, swimming, showering, fighting with each other... and being chased. The horror part of the movie seemed tacked on, an afterthought to make it more interesting. The terrible acting (in any language) does not help. Laughably bad, but not entertainingly bad. Verdict: Trash Good: 14 Meh: 17 Trash: 15
