"CAPRICORN ONE"Story: a NASA mission turns out to be a hoax when the astronauts are pulled from the rocket before launch. They are flown to a sound stage to fake the landing on Mars for the world. When the return to Earth burns up in the atmosphere, the astronauts realize that they're not going to be able to leave, so they escape and try to get the truth out. Meanwhile, a reporter with a history of wild stories investigates some irregularities in the whole story, and comes up against some big resistance. Interesting idea, strong cast, but falls on it's face. It should have worked as a thriller but they try to hammer it into an action flick. They try to 'punch it up' by having scenes of the reporter (played by Elliot Gould, "Ocean's Eleven") in jeopardy, but those look out of place... they feel like they belong in a comedy, frankly. When the astronauts escape (over an hour into the movie...), it turns into a better thriller, but the final escape at the end is pure Hollywood over-the-top actioneering. Even the end is pure Hollywood BS, ending on a smiling freeze-frame... with no idea about what the repercussions are. Not only that, there's some just plain bad crap in here. As in, "the people who wrote the script had no idea what they were doing" stuff... {Spoiler}- it takes 21 minutes for a TV signal to reach Mars, but there's a scene where the astronauts and their wives talk to each other in real time... and NO ONE in the reporter's booth bothers to question it! EVEN AFTER THE ANNOUNCER TELLS THEM THAT IT TAKES 20+ MINUTES FOR A SIGNAL TO GET TO MARS, FER CRYIN' OUT LOUD! - when the 'black helicopters' are on the chase, they pause to talk to each other... by hovering and facing each other... - at the end, the surviving astronaut and the reporter drive several hundred miles within an hour to get to the funeral of the astronauts. There's even some plain dumb mistakes of editing. There's a scene where Gould's car goes crazy, and you can tell that all of the footage was sped up, because they also sped up the footage of Gould reacting!. Also, there was a scene where I saw a shadow on the wall in the background that didn't match up with anyone on screen, and there were supposed to be only two people in the room! Interesting story, but ineptly made. Watchable only on that level.

"V/H/S"Story: a collection of short horror stories done in a 'found footage' format. The main 'wrap-around' story is of a group of young thugs who record their crimes on cameras, who are hired to break into someone's house and recover a video tape. They have no idea what tape it is, so they start watching the tapes they find, which are the other short stories. All of these stories were done by different teams of writer and director, so all of them come across differently and because of that, some work better than others. The wrap-around story ("Tape 56") is the weakest in my opinion, but it's probably because it's cut up to frame the rest of the stories, it doesn't have the flow of the others. My favorites are the first ("Amateur Night") and the last one ("10/31/98"). The others are interesting, involving and some are pretty damn good ideas for stories, but they just don't turn it up to 11 like the others did. One thing they did to was try to address one of the main complaints of the 'found footage' format, and answer the question "why are they still filming?" On a couple of the stories, the camera is built in to the clothing (or costume) of one of the characters. One story is a collection of Skype recordings (literally... the movie was actually a recorded Skype conversation between the two actors!). One story the camera is there because it is the one way to see the 'event' in question. Nicely done! Highly recommended, give it a chance. Even if you hate the 'found footage' thing, just watch "10/31/98"... it is f***ing awesome!

"SPOILS OF WAR"Story: during WW2, American army team (with a British soldier) sent behind enemy lines to capture German commanding officer. A few of the team decide to steal counterfeit money that the Germans were producing (to destabilize British finances) for themselves. Things go bad. Poorly made, poorly acted, poor script, poor special effects... laughably bad movie. - there's a British soldier in this United States of American unit of soldiers... no explanation given. - all of the WW2 equipment certainly looked authentic... but nothing in the movie looked like it was in a war, because everything was so clean. The Jeeps were spotless, the helmets still had a shine on them, even the uniforms looked like they had been dry-cleaned before the shoot. That's probably because it appeared that all of the props were rented from a museum or something, and no one wanted to lose the damage deposit for anything. - computer graphics for the 'war' fighting. CGI muzzle flashing, CGI bullets striking trees (and leaving no holes), CGI blood from wounds that never actually penetrated the outer layer of their uniform (because, see above). Also, they never had to reload the machine guns, AND there were no brass casings flying from the guns. - only one guy in this movie seemed to give a damn about giving a good performance. Every one else looked like they didn't care or had no idea how a WW2 soldier should have behaved. The captured German commander somehow managed to speak German without having a German accent. - a 5-minute sequence of 5 soldiers walking down a hallway. One at a time. - the buildings used in filming had windows that were not available until the 60's. - film is padded out with several scenes of stock WW2 news footage that had NOTHING to do with the story. Oh, and the captured German is gagged... but they don't tie his hands. At all. "It's OK, he's got a gag on, he won't escape." The final credits are also padded out with stock footage and unrelated facts (did you know that more US Army soldiers died during WW2 than US Marines? Did you know that they never even mentioned the Marines in this movie until this fact popped up?). There's also a "no animals were harmed" message at the end, which also adds: "All Nazis used in this production were killed and horribly mutilated, because they deserved it for wanting to control the world". And to top it all off, the show ends with a classic Chuck Jones WW2 "Private Snafu" cartoon where Snafu lets a secret slip... This one. Public domain? Terribly half-assed attempt at a heist/war movie. Avoid at all costs.

"MAD MONKEY KUNG FU"Story: performer/martial artist Chen and his sister are tricked by local crime lord Duen... Chen gets drunk and tricked into bed with Duen's wife, who cries rape, and the only way out is for his sister to be Duen's mistress AND Chen's hands are smashed and crippled so that he can't come back for revenge. Chen becomes a travelling street performer with a monkey, who runs afoul of the local protection gang. Chen befriends a petty thief called Little Monkey, teaches him Monkey Fist kung fu... which LM uses to fight against the oppresion of the gang. Which leads to a big battle between Chen and LM against the gang and their big boss, Duen. Incredible fight scenes, choreographed by Lau Kar-Leung (who also starred as Chen, who you might remember from the 1994 Jackie Chan movie " Drunken Master 2", where he was the old general that Jackie fought under the train). Very acrobatic fighting style, with a ton of comedy as well. Highly recommended.

"GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE"Story: after the events of "The Return of Godzilla" (aka "Godzilla 1985"), scientists collect DNA samples of Godzilla from the wreckage. Agents from the Middle Eastern country Saradia steal samples to give to a Japanese scientist working in their country, but his psychic daughter dies in an explosion before they can be used and her spirit goes into a nearby rosebush... The scientist returns to Japan to study psychic communication with plants, and a rival bio-engineering company tries to steal the G-samples and blows up the volcano that Godzilla fell into before the movie, thus releasing Godzilla again... who faces down the now-giant rosebush monster Biollante and the armed forces with their updated Super X2 ship... OK, a whole bunch of this movie just did not make sense. There's bits about industrial espionage, pieces of romance between the someone's daughter and a scientist that works for... someone else, a psychic schoolgirl, Godzilla attacking a giant flower... It gets a little confused. There's so much story here and a lot of it goes by too quickly so that they can get to the battle scenes. Acting is average, except for a few non-Asian actors who play spies/thugs/killers who either are hamming it up or just have no clue how to deliver a line. Effects are quite nice, as expected. The suit looks nice (apparently they used a newer suit for this one, because the previous one was stolen?), the design for Biollante was unique, and the usual tanks and ray guns and the Super X2 worked out fine. Average for a Godzilla movie, with good battles but too much story that they tried to cram in to too small a timeframe.

Alceste à Bicyclette.A man goes to the Île de Ré to meet an old friend of his and offer him a part in a play he wants to adapt. The friend first hesitates but then offers to repeat the play for a week before giving his answer. Decent little comedy/drama. Nothing extraordinary but very enjoyable. Very good performances from all the actors and an interesting story that brings a bit more to the table than the average "slice of life" film. The ending was a bit contrived, though. 7/10

"IN THE NAME OF THE KING"Story: a farmer named Farmer with a hidden past tries to find his wife who was taken by an invading army, while the King tries to rise against the invaders, who are lead by an evil wizard with help from a traitor. Stunningly bad, considering much of the talent that appeared in this movie. Statham feels out of place as someone who should have been just a normal guy with hidden badass talents (he plays more like The Transporter), Ray Liotta is hilarious as the evil wizard (looking like Wayne Newton), and Burt Reynolds just looks tired and confused. Only Matthew Lillard looks like he's having fun here, but he's so over-the-top that his performance brings laughs and not seriousness. There are parts of the plot that made no sense (how exactly did Farmer make it across the chasm? Where did Lillard's character disappear to?), special effects are poorly done... the whole movie is half-assed. The only entertainment I got from this was laughing at how bad it was.

"SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD"Story: Scott Pilgrim has fallen for Ramona Flowers, and now he has to battle her seven exes to be with her. Is it worth it? Tons of fun, and I can understand why this has become a cult favorite. Great cast, great visuals, lots of fun music, entertaining fights, it's all worth seeing. However, I can understand someone who would be put off by the hyper-stylized appearance of the movie. It can feel like sensory overload, and if you're not willing to just let it wash over you and pull you in, you'd be in for a tough time. Still, I liked it and would recommend it.

Since it's almost Oscar time, I decided that the next few Saturdays until the ceremony will be devoted to Oscar winners for me: THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995): After a fatal shootout and explosion on a ship, Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey) is interrogated about his role and what he saw. What seems like a simple case of several criminals and an ex-cop (Spacey, Kevin Pollak, Benicio Del Toro, an aboslutely over-the-top and awesome Stephen Baldwin, and Gabriel Byrne) just coming together to work on a couple of jobs turns into something else entirely when they run afoul of the mysterious Keyser Soze. Much of the later half to two-thirds of the films revolves around how they're going to deal with a very heavy threat from Soze as delivered by his representative (the late, great Pete Postlethwaite)... and then the twists come in a violent avalanche. Spacey is well-deserving of his Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and while the violence and profanity may be off-putting to some, it's one of the best crafted suspense stories of the past three decades. (Rocks/Recommended) ============================================== A FISH CALLED WANDA (1988): A group of criminals led by the sultry Wanda (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Otto (Kevin Kline, who deserved every bit of his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his insane performance) pull of a successful robbery, but then one of their own gets put in jail... but not before the loot goes missing. Wanda decides to find the location by getting involved with the arrested's lawyer (John Cleese at his post-Python finest), much to Otto's complete dismay. Add in Michael Palin as a stuttering cohort who is kind to animals (which gets played for some very dark laughs), and a lot of getting hit in the head and other painful gags, and you have an absolute laugh riot of a comedy that will have you hooting almost from beginning to end. (Rocks/Recommended) ============================================== TRUE GRIT (1969): When a girl's father is murdered, she enlists the help of a one-eyed, cantankerous marshall (John Wayne) and an arrogant Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) to hunt the killer down. Turns out she's pretty headstrong herself, and this results in the chase being a bit more tumultous than she expected. While "The Duke's" Best Actor Oscar was well overdue, he had better roles before this, and Campbell seems out of place in this weak Western. (Sucks/Not Recommended) ============================================== SPIRITED AWAY (2002): Hayao Miyazaki's triumph. Sullen and easily frightened Chihiro and her parents are moving to their new home when they wind up in an abandoned amusement park that happens to be inhabited by spirits. When her parents get turned into pigs as punishment for eating the spirit food, she has to work in the bathhouse for a not-so-nice spirit to eventually free them. She gets more than her share of help, however, and she grows as a person in the process. The only anime to ever win an Oscar (Best Animated Feature Film) and it is well-deserved. (ROCKS/RECOMMENDED)

"THE CANNONBALL RUN"Story: it's a cross-country race, with the police doing their best to stop them. Hilarity ensues. Based on an actual race, apparently. Not really a movie, more of an excuse to have a bunch of stars on screen hamming it up amongst several scenes of car chases and crashes. And as such, a lot of fun. My favorite parts of this are Jackie Chan's big brawl fight (well, the whole brawl but his part was the best of it), Adrienne Barbeau's cleavage, and Jack Elam. (This is the movie that inspired Jackie Chan to put 'blooper reels' at the end of his movies!) Dumb fun, but fun. Recommended. (Although, the Blu-ray version I had did have a bit of an annoying problem: there were only 2 audio tracks, one that was 5.1 Dolby Surround for the movie and the other a stereo track for the director commentary. I don't have a surround system, so playing it with the surround track actually made some of the movie quieter.)

"DEEP RED"Story: musician sees murder, starts looking into whodunit with the help of a female reporter and a psychologist/friend of the victim, while the killer stalks them all... Italian giallo (crime thriller) from writer/director Dario Argento, which is considered to be one of the best of the genre. Beautifully filmed, everything looks bright and sharp with no deep shadows to obscure the movie. Some stunning scenes from the killer's viewpoint (commonly done in this genre). Very creepy as well, with one scene in particular that completely caught me off guard the first time I saw it (this was the second time, but it still got me a bit). Now, some of the acting is over the top, and some bits of the story are hard to swallow... there's even a false ending that is so wrong that the main character himself doesn't believe it. But this movie is damn good. Side note: first movie teaming of Argento and the prog band Goblin, who would work together several times to great effect, especially in Argento's next movie "Suspiria". Now, I found this in a WalMart bargain bin as part of a 4-movie thriller pack. This is the 105 minute version, so it isn't as edited as other ones out there, and (I'm told) plays better than the unedited version of 126 minutes. The picture is nice and sharp, but there's no extras such as subtitles, audio tracks, or bonuses of any kind. If you are interested in this genre of movie (and how it inspired the slasher trends of the 80's) but are not willing to shell out big money for the collector's version, find this. It is well worth the five bucks I paid for it, and I still have three movie movies in the pack to see. Here's the pack's cover... {Spoiler} Recommended.

"MIAMI CONNECTION"Story: the band Dragon Sound, consisting of five college students/orphans/martial arts students, fight a street gang back by motorcycle-riding ninjas who smuggle "stupid cocaine". Made in 1987, not released in more than a handful of theaters and never put onto video, until it was discovered on Ebay by a theater manager who showed it to his friends.. and now it is being distributed by Drafthouse Films (who also released "The FP"). Yes, this is a very very bad movie. The main star (Y.K. Kim, who almost went backrupt producing this movie) couldn't deliver a line if it had handles and an address plastered on the side. Everyone else in the movie suffers from 'Mike Tyson' syndrome, where they look kinda tough (in an 80's 'generic street gang' way) but their voice is much higher than you expect. The music is terrible 80's pop-rock (and yes, the actors were the recorded singers). There's scenes of filler just to show how tough the main character is (including a slow motion training sequence). The story is just plain stupid, some of the motivations are just knuckleheaded, it's bad, bad, bad...And it's a hell of a lot of fun. On the plus side, some of the fights are actually pretty good. Markedly better than much of the US-produced kung fu movies of the time. Not Jackie Chan level but OK. A blast, but only if you enjoy bad cinema.

"SINISTER"Story: struggling true crime author moves his family into a house where a family was murdered, in an attempt to find clues to the crime and write a new best-selling book (he's been in a slump). He finds a box of old home movies in the attic... movies that show the murder... and more families being killed... and a stranger in the background... Modern horror movie that uses the current trend of 'found footage films' as part of the story. Much better than the smattering of other movies of this type that have come out in the last 5-10 years, and that's mainly because of the main character. Ethan Hawke nails it as the author, trying to recapture the success he had earlier while holding on to his family, and yet is being pulled in to the mystery behind the deaths. When he finds an answer to this, his reaction is not a 'dumb white folk' conclusion. He's easy to like, and you are pulling for him and his family. This movie is also very successful at building a very creepy feeling. It relied more on the whole uneasiness of the situation and less on jump scares. It also builds very nicely, and doesn't 'go for the jugular' right from the start. I also want to add that the score is very effective. The music is intense, atmospheric, disturbing, and mesmerizing. There's a song by the Norwegian band Ulver... I'm going to have to check more of their music out now. Highly recommended.

"THE CAT O'NINE TAILS"Story: blind puzzle-maker teams with newspaper reporter to investigate strange break-in at a genetics lab, coupled with mysterious murder of a scientist, which leads to more murders by someone with a dark secret. Italian giallo directed by Dario Argento ("Susperia") in 1971, with some interesting music by Ennio Morricone ("The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"). Nice story, with a good twisty-turny plot and a bunch of suspects that look as guilty as heck. Karl Malden is having a bunch of fun as the blind puzzle-maker, with James Franciscus all right as the reporter. Some of the supporting cast ham it up a bit, though. Some nice scenes from the killer's viewpoint, stalking their victims as well. However, it has it's flaws. Argento either hasn't picked up many of his stylistic approaches or has toned his style down, because it doesn't flow like his other later movies. Also, some of the supporting characters are more stereotypes (which may have something to do with Italian sensibilities at the time... homosexual men are sooooo crazy...). The biggest problem is that at the end of the movie, the solution doesn't really make sense. {Spoiler}One of the main points is that the genetic lab is studying people with the XYY chromosome and the fact that many criminals have XYY, but it turns into a logically inconsistent solution.
1) A high percentage of criminals have XYY 2) "Suspect" has XYY 3) Therefore, "Suspect" is a maniac who will kill anyone who uncovers his/her secret.
... not taking into account that not EVERYONE with XYY is a criminal, or that "Suspect" is a respected scientist with absolutely no history of violence. So, at the end of the movie, it felt more like they picked a character at random and made them the killer. So, an OK film but not fantastic.

"SEVEN BLOOD-STAINED ORCHIDS"Story: rich young woman survives an attack by a maniac responsible for killing 3 others (and goes on to attack and kill several more), she and her husband go against police wishes and look for clues, leading to a revelation from her past. Straight-forward mystery, punctuated by some fun murders. The killer's motivation is at least believable (making it better than "Cat O'Nine Tails"), but there's a bland performance from the leading man, Antonio Sabato, that doesn't help matters. It also doesn't have the visual style of someone like Dario Argento, instead made by Umberto Lenzi, who worked more in the crime, war and the occasional zombie flick. Well, at least it was interesting.

"SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS"Story: American reporter working in Communist Prague is found in a coma and believed dead. While the doctors lock his body in the morgue and prepare for autopsy, his mind tries to remember what happened to him, reliving his and his co-workers searching for his missing girlfriend... leading to a bizarre club of what could be Satanists... Interesting way of telling a mystery story, with some nice suspense built on whether or not the lead will get out of his coma before they cut him open. Perforances are for the most part all right, but the English dubbing seems to miss some of the emotion of the actors. Not bad... not fantastic but not bad.

"THE RED QUEEN KILLS SEVEN TIMES"Story: years ago, sisters Kitty and Evelyn heard the story about the curse of the Red and Black Queens (sisters who fought constantly, one was killed, returned from the dead one year later to get revenge). Now, there are people in Kitty's life who are being mysteriously killed, and the police attention turns towards Evelyn... Is she in America? Is she dead? What is the truth? Nicely done giallo, with a good twisty-turny story, lots of red herrings and a handful of possible suspects. Acting is... well, over-the-top in most cases, but in the fun kind of way that makes the movie more enjoyable. The cinematography is also quite nice, with a nice Argento-like feel. Also, these are some damn sexy women. On the down-side, it is a little difficult keeping track of who some of the characters are and how they are connected to each other ( especially one guy, a twitchy heroin addict that just appears out of nowhere...), and the final ending felt a bit rushed, with a whole bunch of crap hitting the fan in one scene. Looks great, fun movie, just don't think about it to hard. {Spoiler}(First movie on this set of four... )

"THE FIFTH CORD"Story: reporter investigates a series of murders in high society, while the police treat him as a top suspect because he personally knew the victims. - Franco Nero plays the reporter more like a two-fisted, hard-drinking, hard-loving on-the-edge cop. He slaps around suspects (literally), he gets hammered more than once, he smacks women, he threatens, he growls... he is entertainingly miscast as a newspaper reporter. - plot resolution felt rushed, almost like they picked a suspect at random and made the 'clues' point to him during the wrap-up. - the 'final clue' that leads Nero to the real killer... came out of nowhere, was never even referenced to anywhere else in the movie, was such a leap that it really made no sense. - film feels like it jumps around a lot... jerky camera movements, crazy zooms, going from one scene to the next quickly. Sometimes that works but here it is more distracting. - some nice scenery of Rome. - dubbing could have been better. I sometimes prefer seeing a movie in the original language with English subtitles because you at least feel the 'emotion' of the line. - something I've noticed in giallo films of the time: they aren't very understanding towards people with... different sexual tastes, so to speak. There is a theme that runs through a lot of those movies that feels like it's saying "if you ain't a skirt-chasing horn dog, there's something wrong with your mind, jack!" Average. Some nice scenery, a couple of good kills and a great fight at the end, but still average.

"SEVEN NOTES IN BLACK"Also known as "The Psychic" (the US release title). Story: woman with history of psychic abilities has a powerful vision of seemingly random things, which lead her to find a body walled up in a house owned by her fiancé. With him held by the police, she tries to tie the clues together to find the real killer... and she learns that some of her visions are not of the past, but of her future... - great story! Straight-forward mystery without distractions like romantic complications or wild chases or action scenes, and a damn well done one at that. - written and directed by Lucio Fulci ("Zombi"). - tons of suspense as the main character keeps coming across the clues from her visions. The clues are non-specific enough that when you do see what they do mean, they make you go "oh... OOOOOHHHHhhhhh" and make you want to learn more. - great performances all around, but hampered by bad dubbing. There's a minimum of 'wild-eyed maniac' behavior. - there's a prologue that shows the main character's psychic ability (where she has a vision of her mother jumping off a cliff) that is effective but unnecessarily gory... and because of the dated effects, looks more like it belonged in "Team America: World Police". Great film, worth seeking out!

I watched a couple of films yesterday Not as bad as I remember it. I mean yeah obviously not a patch on first two but rather than being bad, I think it's more 'meh' which after 1 & 2 isn't good. The biggest flaw for me was that apart from Ripley (Who seems to phone it in), and the doctor there really isn't anyone to root for. I mean a bunch of rapists, murderers etc. why would I be particularly interested if they survive. Though I do love Bishop's NOOOOOOOOOO at the end lol. Also for an alien film seriously not enough action or suspense Also watched Girlfriend bought it on bluray and I remember it looked funny in the trailers but man was this just boring for the most part. A severe lack of comedy from what I was expecting, though it did have a few funny bits here and there. Even Jason Segel who I normally love watching couldn't' save this for me
