"APOLLO 18"Story: three astronauts travel back to the Moon for a secret mission in 1974, and discover something. "Found footage" film, showing footage of the 'last mission' and why the US has not returned to the Moon, so lots of footage of the main characters just talking and doing their jobs, with little shadows moving in the background. It looks convincing, the actors were OK, but it was basically a first-person "Alien" all over again so it was nothing that you hadn't seen before. Alternate endings were interesting, though. One question bugs me... {Spoiler} If either 1) the Russian landing module crashed into the orbiter and the footage is destroyed, or 2) the footage was left on the Moon and 'we never went back', how did we get the footage? OK but not really worthy of seeking out.

"PRINCE OF DARKNESS"Story: at the request of an old priest, a team of scientists and grad students study an ancient container found in an abandoned church... a container that is leaking... and something evil is starting to affect the team... and what is with the strange dreams that everyone is having? John Carpenter's 1987 horror cult classic, cleaned up by Shout Factory/Scream Factory. Love the story and how the characters are trying to rationalize the evil they are experiencing with their knowledge of quantum mechanics, while Donald Pleasence stands at the side of the room and tell them "no, no, no... this is evil in it's purest form and we must stop it". There's a lot of dialogue, but nicely punctuated by some very effective scares so the movie never felt like it dragged. Great creepy atmosphere (whoever designed the basement of the church with the giant container deserved a medal), helped by Carpenter's knack for eerie music. Great cast as well, including Pleasence, Victor Wong and Dennis Dun (both of "Big Trouble in Little China"), Jameson Parker (TV's "Simon & Simon"), Lisa Blount ("An Officer and A Gentleman"), with a cool appearance by Alice Cooper as one of the homeless 'zombies' gravitating to the church, trapping the team inside. Side note: did Maffew ( Botchamania) ever use the footage of Alice Cooper stabbing Thom Bray (TV's "Riptide") to death with a bicycle, with the Dusty Rhodes' voice in the background? Panned when it came out, but a definite cult classic and highly recommended. P.S. - damn, Shout/Scream Factory know how to do some fine covers, don't they?

So, I picked up another one of those "50 movies for $10" packs, 'cause it was kinda fun last time I did that. I'm not going to review the ones I've seen before, but if it's still linkable I'll link it. #1: Night of the Living Dead.#2: "HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL" (1959)Story: millionaire throws party in supposed haunted house, his wife's idea (isn't she hilarious?). If the five strangers can survive the night, they each get $10,000... but who (or what) else is in the house, and why? An average 50's ghost story elevated by the presence of Vincent Price, who steals the show when trading barbs with his wife and when trying to uncover what is going on... or is he? He so deftly walks the line between instigator and possible victim that I really didn't know where he stood until the very end. The lovely Carol Ohmart matches Price blow for verbal blow in their scenes, and she is just as difficult to pin down until the end. Elisha Cook Jr. is also a great part of the story, showing up as the owner of the house, convinced of the haunting and drinking heavily as he prepares for his fate. The rest of the cast are solid but these three are the bright spots. Only thing missing was a skeleton bursting through my TV screen. Definitely worth seeing. #3: Carnival of Souls.#4: I Bury the Living.

#5: "BLOOD TIDE"Story: a guy and his wife are searching for his missing sister. They find her in a monastery on a remote Greek island, where she seems to have lost her mind, working with a diver to uncover an ancient ruin... but they release something from the past, that should have stayed buried... Kind of a boring film. The couple are attractive but boring, the sister switches between 'driven to solving the ancient riddle' and 'Looney Tunes' from one scene to the next without reason, the townspeople there just to stare at the foreigners, the monster itself looks like a bad Power Rangers creature... But the movie is saved by a crazed performance by the one and only James Earl Jones, playing the bad-ass treasure-hunter/diver who accidentally releases the monster. Yes, I said bad-ass. He's a mix of Samuel L. Jackson and Lawrence Fishburne bad-assery that just shines on the screen, going from quoting Shakespeare to swearing straight-talk without skipping a beat. And frankly, the blonde bikini babe ( Lydia Cornell) who plays his 'assistant' is a blast of fresh air as well. Also in the movie is legend Jose Ferrer, but he does little more than play doomsayer as the Mayor of the small village. A bad movie but fun for the performance of Jones... Hey, this was made three years after "Star Wars"! Was he that hard-up for acting roles?

#6: "FANGS OF THE LIVING DEAD"Story: beautiful woman inherits castle from mother, learns that her uncle is a vampire who is trying to get her to 'accept her fate' and join him. Woman's fiance comes to castle to find out what's going on. Spanish-made gothic horror film from director Amando de Ossorio ("The Blind Dead" series). This is the 'public domain' version mentioned in the IMDB.com review section, so the 'funnier' bits are in and some of the slower dialogue scenes are gone. I like the idea of the story, but there's a twist at the end that throws the whole movie out the window, as in if The Truth is in fact the truth behind the story, then things that lead up to The Truth are either impossible or total BS. To really explain, I'll have to Spoiler Tag it... {Spoiler}Spoiler Spoiler At the end of the movie the Uncle says it was all a plan to drive the heir crazy and get title to the castle, and that a woman that was killed by a vampire was not killed and the village doctor only said so because he's drunk and easily convinced... except that the protagonist (the heir's fiance) is also a doctor who examined the 'body' and said she was dead, too. Would he have been so easily convinced as well?
Besides, when the Uncle dies at the end, he goes out in a way that makes him look like he WAS a vampire... but then why go through the whole charade of the movie? On the plus side, lots of hot women with heaving cleavage aplenty. There's even a vampire chick cat-fight scene that is so hot that it distracts the Uncle from his plan of KILLING THE HERO, letting the fiance escape and end the movie. A few attempts at comic relief fall flat, some nice countryside scenery, and bosoms. Lots of bosoms. Not a great film, but the mis-steps actually made it a lot of fun.

#7: "BLOODY PIT OF HORROR"Story: camera crew with models break into castle to shoot pictures for trashy novels. Castle is owned by former actor who just wants privacy, castle used to belong to 17th century Crimson Executioner, who killed and punished people for their sins. Crew goes to part of castle where they shouldn't have gone, spirit of CE released, possesses castle's owner, killing/torturing spree begins. Italian-made 1965 gothic horror film, starring actor/bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay (husband to Jayne Mansfield, father of Mariska Hargitay of TV's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"). Fun little movie. There is a little ambiguity as to the identity of the killer, until there's about a half-hour left in the movie. Then it just comes out and says "HE's the killer!", but it is still left up to the viewer to decide if it's 'the spirit' doing it or Hargitay's character is just crazy. I say Option #2 is right. Pretty girls, fun scenes with them using the castle for their photo shoot, cute dialogue between everyone... then the end hits. The only way I can describe it is like this: Imagine watching an episode of the 60's Batman TV series, where the villain-of-the-week actually starts killing the hostages. Picture the Cesar Romero Joker actually breaking someone's back on a torture rack while ranting and raving about the purity of his own perfect body and punishing these people for their sins... It kind of boggles the mind, doesn't it? The end of the movie is insane, but entertainingly insane. I recommend seeing this.

#8: "THE UNDERTAKER AND HIS PALS"Story: trio of motorcycle maniacs murder and mutilate women, including secretary of private detective. Investigation leads to local undertaker and pair of lunatics who run nearby greasy spoon cafe. Very low budget (one time the walls of the set move when the actors bump into it), very low brow comedy, very bad acting, very dumb story... very very bad movie. It goes for black comedy with gore and it just falls flat. There's only actor here with any kind of talent and he can't save the movie. The undertaker looks about as threatening as Les Nessman with a knife, so the climax of the movie with him stalking a witness is just almost funny. Almost. His two 'pals' play like their in some kind of screwball comedy so there's never any real feeling of threat from them, either. It's also one of those movies where the women will be trapped in a corner, gasping 'no, no, NO' and only screaming when the killers get their hands on them. Oh, the women... There's three women that become involved with the detective: his secretary who throws herself at him, only to be killed; the second, who is applying for the job of replacement secretary, who throws herself at him and is killed less than 5 minutes later (when she goes to the diner for a burger); and the third, the sister of the second, who throws herself at the detective RIGHT AFTER HE TELLS HER ABOUT THE DEATH OF HER SISTER! Also, the total of the detective's investigation is one phone call to a stoolie. Total. As in, that's all he does. The entire movie feels like it was written by an eight year old who just read a detective novel and figures he could do it, too... but he only read the underlined parts about the violence and sex. I will say this, though... some good makeup gore. Can't recommend it, unless you really really like brain-damaged movies.

#9: "NIGHTMARE CASTLE"Story: scientist kills wife and her lover, marries her crazy sister to secure inheritance, ghost of wife and lover return to exact revenge. Italian-made gothic horror made in 1965, and boring as hell. Long periods of actress Barbara Steele (who played both sisters), staring into the darkness as shadows move about. There's a sub-plot about the housemistress getting paid for her assistance with a youth-making formula made from the dead wife's blood, but it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the movie and comes across as "what the heck was that about"? I guess it doesn't help that the version in this set is the 'public domain' version, and not a great quality of image. Too much shadow makes it difficult to see what is happening (if anything). I've read elsewhere that the movie is 'mesmerizing'... I would instead call it sleep-inducing. I say avoid.

"V/H/S/2"Story: detective hired to find information on missing college student, finds house belonging to thugs from 'wrap-around' story from "V/H/S/", detective and assistant start watching tapes... Just like the first one, a collection of short horror stories done with a low-tech 'found footage'-style of film making. Some are awesome, some are not. "Tape 49" (this one's wrap-around story) is in my opinion the weakest, not helped by being split up to 'frame' the other stories. "Phase I Clinical Trials" was just okay. The film work looks better or cleaner than what one would expect to see in a 'found footage' movie, because it's supposed to be a high-tech camera in a guy's eye (I guess). Starts out fine, with a nice and creepy beginning... but then there's a girl and a quick sex scene that just kinda appears out of nowhere for almost no reason, and then the story ends. I do think that this would have worked better as a stand-alone movie, if you can buy into the sci-fi premise. "A Ride in the Park" is a blast. A guy riding his bike with one of those "Go Pro" cameras is attacked by zombies and is killed... and turns into a zombie. Gory fun. "Safe Haven" is freaking awesome! Documentary crew is allowed to visit Indonesian cult compound to interview the leader. They picked a very special day to visit... It's Judgement Day!!! I'm not going to spoil it any more, JUST SEE IT! "Slumber Party Alien Abduction" was a little disappointing for me. Great concept (parents leave kids alone at home in the country, aliens appear and start taking kids) but I had two problems. One, the camera feels like it's too shaky, so that almost nothing is visible (it's the first 'found footage' movie that I've had any difficulty watching), and two, the kids in this movie are such annoying little POS's that I'm actually glad when the disappear. Sad ending, too. Loved the two stories in the middle, so I recommend this. Notes: - director of "Tape 49" was Simon Barrett, who wrote and was one of the killers from "You're Next". - director of "Phase I..." was Adam Wingard, who directed "You're Next". - directors of "A Ride..." were Eduardo Sánchez and Gregg Hale, who directed and produced "The Blair Witch Project". - directors of "Safe Haven" were Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Huw Evans, who (respectively) directed part of "The ABC's of Death" and "The Raid: Redemption". - director of "Slumber Party..." was Jason Eisener, director of "Hobo With a Shotgun".

First time watching any of these
Alien vs Predator - Decided lack of Alien vs Predator action. Kinda weird how they felt the need to have the Predator be the good guys....kinda weird they felt the need to place the action on earth. Also I was annoyed at first how the 2 predators got punked out by one alien but considering they were rookies I suppose it almost excuses it. Human characters with no character, just waiting for then to be killed. Also the predators seemed quite bulky too and I laughed a little when they had that shot of the predator and female lead run down the corridor like a heroic duo. Having said all that once the action did get started on the hour mark, I did enjoy it ok. Maybe because I heard so much bad about it I had very low expectations
Alien vs Predator : Requiem - Same as above with a bit more action
World War Z - I can't decide if this was a good movie or just ok. I really liked the first 30 mins and I loved seeing my home city at the start too. Some parts seemed quite unneccessary. I think it was because I went in expecting a zombie movie but it was more like an international action movie with some zombies in it that I'm not 100% sure of my opinion on it

#10: "DEMENTIA 13"Horror-thriller from 1963, filmed in Ireland for producer Roger Corman by Francis Ford Coppola (his first film, not counting a couple of nudie flicks he did previously). Starts with a gothic horror feel, as a female character covers up the death of her husband so that she can manipulate the family's matriarch into changing her will, with other family members around to cause drama... until the woman is killed with an axe. Then it becomes a who-dunnit with the family's doctor becoming involved. Story does have a 'written on the fly'-feel to it, but it is well made and has some very creepy scenes. The truth is telegraphed at the beginning but it is a nice ride to the end. Recommended.

#11: "COUNT DRACULA AND HIS VAMPIRE BRIDE" (aka. "The Satanic Rites of Dracula")Hammer Film's sequel to "Dracula 1972 AD", with returning stars Christopher Lee as Count Dracula and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. Joanna Lumley ("Absolutely Fabulous") appears as Van Helsing's daughter. Tries to re-invigorate the Dracula series by crossing it with a more modern genre, the spy thriller. Ends up feeling like an episode of a British TV spy thriller trying to cash in on the success of "The Avengers". Cushing puts everything he has into giving a solid performance but everything around him seems... just not up to his level, an A-grade star in a B-grade production. Lee doesn't show up till the final act. There is a nice scene at the end where the Count reveals his plan to Van Helsing and Van Helsing informs him that if his plan succeeds, all the world will die and Dracula will have no food... Lee actually made Drac look puzzled at that realization. A failed and sometimes silly attempt at a cross-genre film, but had some moments and is occasionally entertaining.

Spring Breakers (2013) Hey have you ever wanted to watch 'Girls Gone Wild' but made in a way similar to a Michael Mann film? Well this movie is for you... And what an odd thing to have wanted. Anyway this movie is one of those that tries too hard to be something original. But it just doesn't work. The story is four college girls want to go to spring break.... ops I mean SPRING BREAK!!!!!!!!!! but they can't afford it so three of them decide to rob a restaurant to get the cash to get on the bus to SPRING BREAK!!!!!!!!!! So they get there, party, get arrested for possession (GASP!)... and what's funny they are arrested in their bathing suits.. so they attend their court session wearing only bikinis and shoes.. So where was I? Oh yeah, judge sets a bail, girls can't afford, James Franco playing a parody of some rapper bails them out.... hi-jinks en-shoe. Well sort of, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens bail out of the movie to presumably salvage their good girl images, and the other two take up a life crime or some shit. Anyway I think I said too much. The film is shot in very arty way that really does not fit the tone of the story... And the story is a mess anyway.. If it was filmed the more conventional way it would of probably gone straight to DVD. The soundtrack is god awful.. I think it's done by Skrillex. Lot of dubstep. But then they try that Brain Eno style sitting on a organ synth keyboard.. Brain Eno does it well, Squirrel X.. whatever his name is... does not. Plus Franco does a rendition of Britney Spears song.. You know that one when Britney cuts herself in the music video. Anyway opinions are divided on this movie. Personally I thought it was awful. The acting sucked, the direction suck, the soundtrack sucked, the story sucked, and the ending... the f*** was that? Its trash pretending to be high class.. but the trash still shines through. Like someone from Jersey Shore dressed up as Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast At Tiffany's I will give it 1 and a half 'passed out college kid at the swim up bar' out of 5. EDIT: gee I say 'Anyway' a lot. Anyway EDIT EDIT: Oh, should mention that Jeff Jarrett is in it as a college teacher. Thought I would mention it on this here wrestling specific message board What the f*** was he doing in this movie? Well better then being in TNA at the moment I suppose.

#12: "THE LAST MAN ON EARTH"Based on the Richard Matheson story "I Am Legend". Story: The world has been decimated by a plague that turns people into (what appears to be) vampires. During the day, Dr. Robert Morgan scours the desolated city for vampires, searching and destroying all he can find. At night, Morgan barricades himself in his house and prepares for the next day. When he finds a woman who appears to be uninfected, he tries to find a cure... but who is she? Phenomenal performance by Vincent Price, especially the extended flashback sequence that shows the death of his wife and child in heartbreaking detail (along with explaining the details of the plague). At first he seems out of place in a 'man of action'-type role but as the movie goes you see how it fits... he's a normal man in an incredible circumstance (and definitely more believable than Will Smith as a scientist). And a great twist at the end. HIGHLY recommended!

#13: "THE PYX"Story: prostitute falls from tall building, police detective tries to figure out why. Movie switches between the prostitute going through her last 24 hours and the investigation the next day. Canadian-made thriller made in 1973. Karen Black is interesting as the hooker, dealing not only with her 'job' and her addiction, but the mysterious circumstance leading up to her death. Christopher Plummer is wasted as the detective. Movie tries to throw in a twist ending with a supernatural bend to it, but other than a decent performance by Black it's boring. Meh.

Not wanting to go to bed and boredly looking through Netflix, I somehow came across "The Black Knight Returns". Seeing all the one-star reviews sparked my love for awful movies, and I just had to watch it.
Stay away if you don't like bad movies. It'll waste your time. Otherwise, it's an absolute B-movie gem, perfect for a bad movie night or some sporking. Dialogue's terrible, plot's disjointed, costumes look like something someone would go paintballing in, the background music muffles everything at several points, there's so much obvious Photoshop for effects, and the main bad guy is a Robert Evans doppelganger (and actually the best part of the movie).
I snarked all the way through and had a blast.

#14: "DOMINIQUE" (aka. "Dominique is Dead")Story: Dominique believes that her husband David is trying to drive her insane. When she commits suicide, strange things begin to happen around David. Is Dominique haunting her husband, or is something else going on. British-made thriller made in 1978 by prolific director Michael Anderson ("The Dam Busters", "Around the World in 80 Days", "Logan's Run", "Doc Savage: Man of Bronze"). Boooooorrrrrriiiiiiing. Felt like an English version of "Dynasty" with fewer characters, less sex and spooky music. No big shocks to speak of. Plodding pace. And the whole plot could have been revealed if someone turned on a damn light once in a while, rather than standing in a dark hallway looking half-scared/half-bored at a creepy apparition at the end of the hallway. Avoid. #15: "The Ghost"

An absoloutley brilliant horror movie by the gorgeous Twisted Twins Jen and Sylvia Soska who are doing See No Evil 2. Katherine Isabelle is amazing as is the whole cast and a great look into the world of Body Modification and you definetly see influence from movies they love specifically Audition. Absoloutley highly reccomended.
