"WALKING TALL"Fictionalized biopic of Sheriff Buford Pusser, who returned to his home town after years on the road ( as a pro wrestler!) and doesn't like the criminal element that has been moving in. After catching a casino cheating, he's beat up and left for dead at the side of the road... but Pusser survives and fights back, eventually becoming Sheriff. But is the price too high? Great movie, which takes the gritty true story and turns it into a (sort of) feel-good actioneer with a (sort of) upbeat, pro-"small town values" ending. Joe Don Baker is perfect as Pusser, a good ol'country boy with an easy smile and a strong hand to raise against wrong. No false notes with any of the other actors as well. And violent? Heck yeah, this is a violent movie. For a film of this era, it has a some very bloody scenes, especially his first encounter with the seemier side of the law, and it doesn't flinch when it is presented. The movie does kind of lull you into relaxing with periods of quiet (and even some nice humourous bits) and then jumps up and slaps you with some hard violence to wake you back up. Damn worth it. Highly recommended. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "GOON"Bouncer Doug Glatt is a nice (if somewhat simple) guy, with a natural ability to beat people up. During a hockey game where he knocks out a mouthy hockey player, he's brought on to the team as an enforcer... and he soon is sent up to the minor leagues to help a struggling team and a protect a gifted player who has lost his nerve. But he's also on the road to come face-to-face with an aging enforcer who is retiring soon. Alnog the way, Doug also finds a girlfriend, with a bit of a problem. Loosely based on a true story, "Goon" is actually a strangely sweet kind of comedy, mainly because of the performance by Seann William Scott as Doug. Doug is really just a nice guy, a little slow but a nice guy, and he doesn't really seem to understand what is going on around him. It's almost like he's the Forrest Gump of punching guys out. And the thing is that everyone around him seem so jaded with where they are, his mere presence is enough for them to start questioning whey they become so jaded. Lots of great performances by the supporting cast, with Liev Schreiber as veteran enforcer Ross "The Boss" Rhea, Marc-André Grondin as the talented (but falling apart) star Xavier LaFlamme, and Alison Pill as Doug's potential girlfriend. HOWEVER, I would be entirely happy if someone took Jay Baruchel and flushed him down a toilet. And kept flushing. His time on screen was incredibly tiring for me. Another thing I liked about this movie is that it doesn't demonize the role of 'enforcer' in hockey. There's a lot of people ranting and raving in sports columns about how fighting is bad for the game, and this movie is really a nice exploration of the reasons behind WHY these guys exist. And there's tons of funny stuff dealing with the hockey team. Lots of fun in this movie. Highly recommended. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "LADY FRANKENSTEIN"Disc 6, Side 2, Movie 2 of the "Chilling Classics" 50 DVD set. Baron Frankenstein's daughter Tania returns home to help and support her father in his experiments, which are, of course, creating life by sewing body parts together and kick-starting it with lightning. The Baron is killed when his experiment works, because the monster kills him and escapes, wandering the countryside killing people who wronged him in his previous life. Tania convinces... well, seduces her father's assistant into killing the local 'slow' helper (a young man with a learning disability) and then getting his brain and heart into the body, so that he could hunt the creature.... and so that she could prove her father right. Not a bad movie, actually. The actress in the lead is actually better than just a sexy body, appearing to be at times sensible in her plan and crazy in her desires. The rest of the actors are OK, with a little over-acting going on but it's kind of expected in a B-movie like this. The monster looks a little plasticy, though. (Fun note: the Baron's assistant is played by Mickey Hargitay, former Mr. Universe, husband to Jayne Mansfield and father of "Law & Order: SVU" main character Mariska Hargitay) Nice version of the classic, with a woman in the 'mad scientist' role. The sound was a little bad on this DVD version, but not bad enough to detract from the fun. Verdict: Good. Good: 8 Meh: 9 Trash: 7

Attack the block
It's basically Hoodies vs Aliens done in a b-movie style. It was surprisingly good with strong creature design and some great action set-pieces, actually it’s pretty much none-stop action after the first 15 minutes. The movie really felt fresh compared to many of the more generic films you see.
If b-movies, inner-city thugs or alien invasions appeal to you then this comes highly recommended.

"WATCHMEN"Story: In an alternate history 1985 where the world is on the brink of a nuclear-powered WW3, Rorschach (a masked vigilante who works outside the law) uncovers a possible conspiracy to get rid of the Watchmen, a former team of super-heroes that were forced into retirement when super-heroes were outlawed. Rorschach contacts the only one of his former team he trusts, Nite Owl 2, with his suspicions. That leads them on a trail to the truth, which is bigger than they expected... Great film, but not perfect. Likes: 1) Rorschach. Jackie Earle Haley was incredible as the masked man who had been pushed over the edge. He was a coiled spring, ready to explode at any time. He was the Randy Savage of the film. Wonderful performance. 2) The visuals. This film looks like the comic, and it looks fantastic. The set design, the cinematography, the effects (for the most part... see below) are top notch. 3) Nite Owl 2. He's the character that kind of provides the 'ground level' that the audience is watching from, and Patrick Wilson does a pretty damn good job. Through him we are explained the story. Nicely done. 4) The ending. Yes, I liked how they changed the ending of the movie. It was logical for me... {Spoiler}instead of the book's original ending of Ozymandias faking an alien invasion, taking the idea that Dr. Manhattan has gone over the edge and using that as the binding point for the nations was a damn good idea. The world already knows (or actually doesn't know) the extent of the Doctor's power, they were already afraid of him. Bold move, and I thought it worked. Dislikes: 1) Too long. I kind of like that they fit into the film each and every 'origin' story for the main characters, but that really made watching the movie a challenge. I read somewhere that Terry Gilliam once said the comic would work better as a mini-series... yeah, they probably should have gone that way. 2) Dr. Manhattan. They got the look for the character, but the effects used didn't look as realistic as they could have. I know that the actor was on-set during filming, so the other actors were interacting with him in a real-time sense, but after the SE team put the Doctor in, it didn't look like. Maybe he wasn't supposed to be, but it kept bugging me through his scenes. 3) Silk Spectre 2. Hot chick, but I never really felt for her. Now, am I the only one who kept picturing the original Charlton comics characters in the Watchmen roles? ESPECIALLY when I saw Nite Owl 2's flying ship, I couldn't help but picture it as the Blue Beetle's Bug.Recommended. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "PART 2: WALKING TALL"Story: picking up where "Walking Tall" left off, Sheriff Buford Pusser is now out of the hospital and back on the job, keeping the peace in his home county while hunting down the people who ambushed him and killed his wife. Meanwhile, the sleezy Mr. Witter tries to arrange Pusser's removal from office... permanently. Not bad, but certainly not as good as the first one. Part of it is Bo Svenson's performance as Pusser. He tries, but he really doesn't connect with the character, not having the same easy charm that Joe Don Baker had. He's all right when there's a punch to be thrown but the scenes where he's with his family just seem awkward. The movie also has a bit of a slicker, more Hollywood style, and not the independant feel of the original. They also made the movie PG, which required softening up some of the violence. There's also a disturbing air of Eddie-sploitation through this movie. See, apparently Buford Pusser himself was set to star in this very movie, but the night he returned home from Hollywood he died in a car accident (which some still call suspicious). And there's an awful lot of scenes here that involve car crashes... A bit of Hollywood cashing in? Well, I'm not shocked but it still felt uncomfortable. The movie even announces at the end that Pusser had died in a car accident and even shows on screen the police accident report. Still, there are some good points. Most of the supporting characters do well, and the story does move along at a good clip. Not highly recommended, but all right. I got the "Walking Tall" 3-pack for $15, so I figure I got an awesome movie for $15 and a couple of others for free (I still haven't seen the final one yet, but I'll let you know). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "DRAGONS FOREVER"Story: Jackie Chan is Johnny, a lawyer hired to convince a woman who owns a fish farm to sell to a factory. Johnny hires his friend Luke (Sammo Hung) to con the woman and his friend crazy Tim (Yuen Biao) to plant a bug in the woman's home. This leads to a comedic misunderstanding and much martial arts fighting. Johnny also doesn't know that the factory is also manufactures drugs, and the boss doesn't like losing... Incredible fight scenes. There's a great one with Jackie on a floating restaurant being attacked by a gang, two three-way fights between Jackie, Sammo and Yuen (the first one a great mix between fighting and Three Stooges-esque comedy), and the final battle against the drug gang (who includes Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, with some disturbing eye liner...). There's also a pretty solid story. Sammo finds love with the woman, Jackie falls for her sister (who is also a scientist who tests water quality), and Yuen... he's nuts. He rants and raves about sins and vice and is generally just off the deep end. Highly recommended.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Only half way through the movie, but I figure I'd give some thoughts so far.
Every scene not involving Sam Witwicky is, for the most part, awesome.
Every scene involving Sam Witwicky is just awkward. Bay throws the stupidest humor around him. That asian guy from The Hangover is definitely a low-light. Deep Wang. Gangsta pistols. f*** that. At least his parents have been kept to a minimum so far. Sam trying to find a job is such a stupid subplot that defies all logic. He's ACKOWLEDGED as having helped save the world twice. Maybe it is explained later why he got the shaft, but I'm going to have to just assume that it is because he is a douchenozzle. A much better story would have involved him with the Transformers/NEST right from the start.
The sequence in Chernobyl is pretty tight. The set up with the moon landing is well put together.
Laserbeak is very cool. The red ferrari is a nice design. Shockwave looks badass.
John Tuturro's character is so very annoying. Frances McDormand and John Malkovich collecting some nice paychecks. It's like a Coen brother movie, if there was a third Coen brother who was a bit touched.
So far it might be the strongest of the three movies. Still can't surpass its flaws to be a good movie, but now you can at least see that there is a good movie clawing desperately at the screen.

"DRUNKEN MASTER 2"(re-released in the US as "The Legend of the Drunken Master" by Dimension Films) Jackie Chan stars as Wong Fei-Hung in this 1994 (sort of) sequel to his 1978 movie "Drunken Master". Story: in an attempt to save tax money on medicinal herbs and roots (Fei-Hung's father is a well-known doctor), Fei-Hung slips a package of ginger root into the British Consolate's luggage while travelling by train. Trying to regain the ginger, he accidently steals an ancient jade seal that the British were taking to a museum in Britain, and fights with an old man who is also after the seal (and who gets the ginger). Once home, Fei-Hung encounters thugs working for the British, who are also new bosses at the local steel factory. At the insistance of his mother, Fei-Hung fights using his father's Drunken Boxing, which requires him to drink alcohol while fighting to gain power. Fei-Hung wins, but gets sloshed and embaresses his father. His father also finds out about the ginger (which Fei-Hung tried to fake with his father's favorite bonsai tree), and kicks Fei-Hung out... Y'know, there's a lot of story here. Let's just go with "Won Fei-Hung uncovers plot to steal Chinese artifacts and fight back with Drunken Boxing". Story: solid effort. All of what I typed in the previous paragraph is only the first half of the movie, and yet it never seemed to me to be wearing me down or slowing the movie. Acting: no one appears to be out of their depth or not able to live up to their characters, so no false notes. One quibble: Anita Mui (she was the new shop owner in "Rumble in the Bronx") plays Fei-Hung's mother to a T, but she looks about the same age as Jackie... which makes me believe that she may have actually been his step-mother... Action: PHENOMENAL. MUST SEE. The copy I have is the international version on VHS, which still has the original ending and end credits bloopers. HIGHLY recommended.

"THE FP"In a post-apocalyptic future, two gangs settle their diferences with a deadly sport. A year after JTRO's brother dies during a match, JTRO returns to find the FP ruled by a rival gang, and he has to get battle ready to make the FP free again. And the name of the sport is BEAT-BEAT REVELATION!!! OK, this is a parody of a slew of action films where boxers, racers, skate-boarders, chess players, kickboxers and who knows what else compete for revenge/love/freedom/etc. The reason that this parody works so well is because the movie is so straight-up a presentation that you can't help but laugh. There are never any moments where someone 'winks at the camera', everyone is playing it serious. There must have been a TON of outtakes (sadly, no blooper reel on the DVD). It is an over-the-top movie, so you can't expect anyone to be 'subtle', and no one is. Jason Trost is really good as JTRO, the square-jawed hero who can't put the words together for the girl he likes. But the one who really lights up the screen is Art Hsu as KCDC, the loud-mouthed MC/friend of JTRO (and the only minority in the movie). Quibble: it's not really a 'post-apocalyptic future'. It's more like a super-trailer park Redneckistan. There's no evidence of any type of societal collapse outside of the FP... which actually kinda helps the movie, or it helps in the 'man are these people stupid' sense that makes this movie so much fun. Lots of fun, a modern cult classic. Highly recommended. Note: Teachers, parents, police, anyone in authority... if there are white kids in your life who want to be 'Gangsta', sit them down and make them watch this movie.
Then tell that "THAT is what you look like to the rest of the world!"----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT"Disc 7, Side 1, Movie 1 of the "Chilling Classics" 50 DVD set. The heir to the Butler home is trying to sell, but something (or someone) is still there and willing to kill to keep the family secrets buried. Low budget slasher/thriller from 1972 (released in '74) is a strange story. It does unfold very slowly, wth a few periods of axe-swinging mayhem, with the true story revealed during a sepia-toned flashback at the end of the film (involving insanity and incest). It's just that it doesn't feel like a full movie, just an idea of a plot that they let meander until they found they had too many blanks to fill in at the end. Most of the performances are all right, except for James Patterson, who plays the centerpiece of the plot, the heir who want to sell the house. The only time his face changes from 'stoic' to show any kind of emotion is when he is in pain... and that only happens at the end of the movie. There is a good creepy feel to the film, but it feels hollow and the ending doesn't really live up to it. Verdict: Meh. Good: 8 Meh: 10 Trash: 7

The original idea for Watchmen was Alan Moore wanted to use the Charlton characters for the story. I believe he was either denied or DC couldn't get the rights for them. Latest movie I saw was The Amazing Spider-Man. I have to say it was really disappointing. I just didn't care for it. When you go to see a movie like this, you often expect there to be a scene (or bunch of them) that completely blow you away and make you go "wow". I didn't get that from this at all. I kept waiting to be amazed (pun not intended) but nothing ever came of it. They did do a great job on Spider-man's web-swinging and fighting but beyond that, I wasn't impressed with this at all. I prefered the Raimi films but I did go into this with an open mind and I just wasn't impressed at all. The Avengers had that sense of awe, this didn't.

I know, that's why it kept creeping into my mind while I watched it. Apparently, DC had the rights for the characters, but DC wanted to be able to use them in the future, so the head editor convinced Moore to make the characters more unique.

Okay, I actually went to the theater to see this and I don't know if documentaries count in this, but still, I'm going to review it. KATY PERRY: PART OF MEPlot (How can you have a plot for a documentary?): This film tells the story of the trajectory of Perry's career as gospel singer Katheryn Hudson until the present day as pop singer and global superstar Katy Perry, bearing testimony from Katy (real name Katheryn) about her childhood, talking about the Teenage Dream era, with scenes from backstage of her last world tour while trying to take time to resolve personal problems, including her divorce from British comedian Russell Brand. The interim scenes document her last world tour, the California Dreams Tour, and were recorded on November 23, 2011 at Staples Center, Los Angeles. Verdict: First and foremost, this is something that I was really curious about and I actually do enjoy Katy Perry's music enough to actually go see this. What did I think of it? I actually enjoyed it a lot. Sure, there were some parts that mentioned her failed marriage to Russell Brand, as well as her Christian upbringing, as well as what she went through before breaking out into stardom like how when she was signed to another label, she didn't want to sing what they wanted her to sing. There was, of course, backstage footage from her concerts, as well as concert footage of her performances. I enjoyed those parts. All I can say is that I recommend it if and ONLY IF you're a fan of Katy Perry.

"PANIC"Disc 7, Side 1, Movie 2 of the "Chilling Classics" 50 DVD set. Story: scientist infected with nasty virus turns into mutant, roams sewers of small British town killing slow women. Detective tries to kill, woman scientist tries to save, military surrounds town in case virus escapes. Badly made movie. Slow, dull and uninvolving. Filmed on a definite budget, and not that bad looking (other than it being a cheap transfer to DVD, but I do like my cheap movies to look cheap), but because of the pace you really don't get invested in it and therefore do not care. Rubber-suit monster looks... all right (the majority of the budget must have gone into it), but mostly seen at a distance or in the dark, so they don't really take advantage of it until the nd. The hero's name is Captain Kirk. The ending is the most infuriating part, though. The military has surrounded the town, and the government has sent a plane with a 'payload' to crash into the town to wipe it out. After the monster is killed, the final scene is the pilot of the plane just saying "It's all right! We can go home!"... and, credits. Also, after the credits is an on-screen blurb "WHAT YOU HAVE SEEN MIGHT REALLY HAPPEN...PERHAPS IT ALREADY HAS!" So, yeah. Verdict: Trash Good: 8 Meh: 10 Trash: 8 (Movie #26... I'm half through the pack! I think my IQ has dropped a couple of points because of these movies, but damn it I'm gonna get through!) (Oh, and I watched "The FP" again with friends... Verdict is movie is awesome, I'm a horrible person for inflicting it on them. Seriously, highly recommended, especially for a bunch of people at a party.)

"THE LAST VAMPIRE ON EARTH"Story: Kinda cute college student meets pale male student with an interest in blood. He's a vampire, she's the daughter of a Jehovah's Witness 'pastor', they become friends. Among the worst movies I have seen. None of this is what I would call even close to being 'competent'. Acting: terrible. Direction: terrible. Plot: slow and boring. And, regarding the religion... it is a plot point because the girl has AIDS and they (her family and religion) do not believe in blood transfusions... but they make no effort to be accurate in any of the other details of the religion. Lazy lazy lazy writing. I haven't seen them, but even the "Twilight" movies couldn't be this bad... "The Last Vampire..." doesn't even have anything worth laughing about. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Story: Driving cross-country to a job interview, Colin plays it safe when he has car problems and takes a shortcut to a one-horse town. But as luck would have it, he comes across a fatal road accident. One of the drivers, Jina, is shaken, the other dead, and beside him, a briefcase full of money. When Colin resists temptation and does the right thing, turning it in to the local cop, his good deed causes a series of fateful events to unfold. I went into this thinking this was gonna be just another "U-Turn" and in a way it was and wasn't , and by that I mean there was not any real stand out performances or real attention grabbing characters , and it isn't a serious as U-turn...this is surprisingly more a black comedy than anything. But what it did do is just throw sheer WTF around all willy nilly , basically the title of the movie holds true..if Vince russo got into movies..this would be his first without a doubt in mind. All in all great twists and I think a well done movie but aleast for me it is probably gonna need a repeat viewing to connect all the gawd damn dots.

"MESSIAH OF EVIL"Disc 7, Side 2, Movie 1 of the "Chilling Classics" 50 DVD set. Young woman travels to small town on the coast to find her father, finds his house empty, meets a traveling aristocrat and his two sexy companions... and finds the town in the midst of a strange spell of something evil... GREAT movie. Very creepy from beginning (where a gas station attendant is attacked by something) to end. Not a lot of gory bits (it is a low budget film from 1973), but what it lacks there it more than makes up for in suspense. Not a lot of the movie is explained, leaving everything up to the viewer's interpretation and giving the movie the 'is it real or a nightmare' feel. As for acting, the female lead Marianna Hill is fine, but sometimes seems a bit disconnected from what's around her (although, this does play into the dream-like quality of the movie). Michael Greer is great as the aristocrat, looking a little like a young Donald Sutherland and acting a lot like a soft-core porn version of Doctor Who, complete with companions Anitra Ford as the sultry one and Joy Bang as the teenage runaway jail-bait one. And while they could have just been eye candy, these two give great performances themselves as bored, confused and (eventually) frightened real people. Very well done, reminding me a lot of the more suspenseful part of the original "Dawn of the Dead" (and in one scene, "The Birds"!). It also reminded me of an 80's movie called "Dead & Buried", which is also a must see. Since I've been limiting my rating for this set to Good, Meh or Trash, this one is Good but a highest ranking Good as possible. I would recommend seeking this one out if you are into 70's horrors. Top notch. Verdict: Good Good: 9 Meh: 10 Trash: 8

CAUGHT UPPlot synopsis: Back in L.A. after serving time on drug charges, Daryl Allen (Bokeem Woodbine), who narrates, plans to open a nightclub, and a pal offers to bankroll the business. Daryl drives his buddy to the bank, unaware he's taking part in a robbery. He's sent back to the slammer for a long stretch, and during that period his girlfriend (Cynda Williams) marries. Released after five years, Daryl is unemployed when he meets Vanessa Dietrich (Williams), who gets him work as a limo driver. Vanessa and Daryl are targets of a hitman, and Vanessa tells Daryl she suspects her ex-lover Ahmad (Basil Wallace). What Daryl doesn't know about Ahmad and Vanessa may turn out to be his undoing. Verdict: My goodness, this movie is very confusing and I have to say that I was better off paying five dollars for a four-pack with this included because this movie was anything but good. The plot was rather weak and it is so obvious that this movie was low on budget because this is definitely suited for Showtime on the weekends or late at night or even when local channels air movies. Towards the end, you really don't know who the real villain is and when you find out, it turns out to be someone who was not seen much at the beginning. Also, the movie is a typical cliche about a guy getting out of jail and wanting to go straight but ends up back in the life of crime despite not wanting to be. I find it really hard to believe that this was even released in theaters because it has straight to video written all over it. I actually wonder if people out there actually paid to see this and according to Wikipedia, this movie grossed six million. I guess that shows how well it did (End sarcasm). Overall, only watch it if you're bored and nothing better to do. The only good thing that came out of it was the beautiful Cynda Williams. If you buy this, make sure it's very cheap. I can't really recommend it, but if you want to watch it, do so, but it's not a good movie.

"THE WARRIORS"Story: the head of the city's biggest gang is killed at a giant meeting of the major New York street gangs, and the Warriors are blamed. Now the Warriors have to get back home, to their own turf, with the police AND the street gangs after them. Cult classic film, and if you haven't seen it yet, do so. Yes, it is a 'stylized' version of street gangs but it's still a great simple story with some great performances (especially Michael Beck as Swan, the 'war chief' who takes the lead of the Warriors on their trek home). Highly recommended.

"FINAL CHAPTER: WALKING TALL"Third and final movie based on the true story of Tennessee sheriff Buford Pusser, a man who stood up against the crime that ran his hometown and then smashed it in the face with his favorite 4x4 club. Now that the State Line Mob has been chased away, there's a feeling around that the town doesn't need a rough-and-tumble man like Buford as sheriff anymore... There's a new lawyer in town talking about 'violating civil rights' and 'abuse of power' now. Buford loses the next election, the family is trying their hardest to keep the farm, times are getting hard... And then Hollywood calls. This movie chronicles the events leading up to the death of Buford Pusser, including his dealing with the production of the first "Walking Tall" movie, and the possibility of his appearing in the second movie. The movie itself plays a lot like the second, with a more 'made-for-TV' feel to it than the first, BUT with a good helping of female frontal nudity and a couple of bloody fights thrown in to get the "R" rating the second lacked. Bo Svenson is more comfortable as Buford this time, even kind of touching when he visits his wife's grave. Overall, not bad. I wouldn't have watched it if it hadn't been packaged with the first, but not bad at all. Again, $15 for one kick-ass movie and two for free is well worth it.

"THE BLANCHEVILLE MONSTER"Also known as "Horror", this is movie #28 (Disc 7, Side 2, Movie 2) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Young lady returns to the family castle on the verge of her 21st birthday with a friend from school and her friend's brother. But there are strange goings on at the family castle... her father did not die in a fire but turned into a monster and is now on the loose. Or is he? And what are the future plans for the young lady? Gothic Italian-made horror made in the 60's. The acting is fine, the sets are quite nice (especially the ruins and the tomb), the atmosphere is eerie, and there's a plot twist or two, but the pace was too darn slow to keep my interest. Verdict: Meh Good: 9 Meh: 11 Trash: 8 (Only 22 to go...)

"THE STORY OF RICKY-OH"Story: Ricky is the new inmate at a privatized prison, and he rebels against the warden and his thugs when he finds they are growing opium. For a martial arts film, it's pretty poor. Terribly acted, horribly dubbed, badly-staged fights, ridiculously plotted, and pointlessly (and unneccessarily) gory. For a comedy, it's a laugh riot. Terribly acted, horribly dubbed, badly-staged fights, ridiculously plotted, and pointlessly (and unneccessarily) gory. And when I say gory, I mean it. This is 'Monty Python meets Texas Chainsaw' gore. And yet, it's so silly that it's tough to be grossed out (but damn it they do try their hardest). Relentless in it's excessive stupidity, it's worth seeing for a big laugh. Watch with friends. Recommended.

"ROLLING THUNDER"Story: Vietnam prisoner of war Major Charles Rane returns home to his wife and son in Texas to the fanfare of his hometown in Texas. But his seven years in a POW camp changed him... and his wife, who has fallen in love with another... And then a gang of thugs kills his family, destroys his right hand and steals the gift money the town gave him. And now Rane is looking for revenge... Fantastic exploitation action/thriller, that's more of a disturbing look at the man than the story of the action. The movie really paints a picture of Rane as a broken man, someone who just cannot relate to not only his family, but the world. There's a great scene of him talking about (and demonstrating) how the soldiers tortured him, and you can see in his eyes that the only thing he can feel anymore is the pain they inflicted on him. And when the gang robs him and kills his family, you can see behind the faceplate that he's finally got a purpose. If you've read the comic "Born" from Marvel comics, about Frank Castle coming home from Vietnam and his becoming "The Punisher... it is so reminiscent of that. Incredible performance by William Devane. There's also a great performance from Tommy Lee Jones as a fellow POW who is afraid of coming home to his wife and extended family. And if you saw the family, you'd understand why he left in the first place... suburban hell. Also, familiar face time: James Best, a.k.a. Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane (hyuk hyuk hyuk I'm gone...) from "The Dukes of Hazard" is the leader of the thugs. Long, slow build-up that ends with a frenzy of shotgun-ny violence. Highly recommended. (I have to add... this DVD was produced by the Warner Archives, and it's a nice service but you can tell that they don't really put any effort into making this a proper release. No special features, not even proper chapter stops, just the movie and a trailer. I'm sure this would be a hit if they wanted to give this a proper release. And they would have to use a different DVD cover, like the ACTUAL POSTER!!! Wouldn't this look awesome on your shelf?) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "CATHY'S CURSE"This is movie #29 (Disc 8, Side 1, Movie 1) of the "Chilling Classics" 50 movie set. Story: Twenty years after his father and sister are killed in a car accident, a man returns to his former home with wife and daughter. The little girl becomes possessed by the spirit of the sister and starts trying to drive the mother crazy and killing others who get in the way. Mid-70's horror made in Montreal, Canada, on a low budget. A very low budget. Not that it's a bad thing, but at times the story feels like it was made by the SCTV crew for Count Floyd's Monster Chiller Horror Theater. Very poorly transfered from a video tape that must have went through a metal detector. Creepy at times, laughably cheap at times, could have been more enjoyable if the copy was better. Verdict: Meh Good: 9 Meh: 12 Trash: 8
