Any show with Neil Patrick Harris in an episode I just can't watch. It's pretty much the opposite of an endorsement for me. BANNED

I can't stand Glee. I watched the first couple of shows, and just couldn't get into it. I didn't think it was funny, and the singing was well atrocious. Not that they were bad, but they were singing without any real emotion.

I've tried to watch it with my g/f, since she'll try to watch wrestling with me. And I tried again last night, it was bad...just real bad. It seems like a live action Burger King Kidz Club. The only one I didn't spot was the totally radical dude with headphones and a skateboard (and or roller blades) =

I love it. It is one of the few primetime shows I watch.

I've been watching the past few weeks. It really is a bad show. Almost all the characters are assholes. The main girl is a self absorbed diva(and has a terrible real life reputation) The Gay kid is a self absorbed diva one step away from a rapist, but getting treated as the victim. The Cheerleaders are unapologetic Bond Villain Henchmen(and lesbians... an interesting character choice) Plus the autotune is really annoying, sometimes even when they talk, they autotune. YES! That is exactly how I felt. I'm sitting there watching this, and each character is a bigger dickhead than the last. They are just snarky and shitty for no real reason. They are the people I would avoid like the plague in real life, so why would I want to watch their dickish exploits on TV? Especially with the crappy broadway singing on top of it.

Most TV shows today attempt to thrive today on sarcasm and snarkiness...welcome to the Internet age, after all.
I don't watch Glee, mainly because I don't watch just about any television outside of sports and news with any regularity. I assume people liked it at first for being a fun high school show that had some catchy tunes, but the more Facebook updates I see my friends make about it this season, the more it sounds like it's completely lost it's way. Friends of mine who were big time into it seem to be asking "What the hell is wrong with Glee?" each week now.
Personally speaking, I'm a singer, and I LOATHE autotuning, unless it's being used in a funny way. When I heard how much of the show is autotuned, it was a major turnoff for me ever giving it a real chance, especially when I learned how much of the cast was legitimately talented, yet still being artificially manipulated like that.

It's whole premise is being campy first and foremost.
The reason people say they're loving the writing is because there is a double irony in effect in probably a little over half the scenes. First, to understand this, I'm assuming you all know why really bad campy movies and such become cult classics or what have you, right? The "so bad, it's good" effect. Well, the episodes feature campy as can be moments, which is usually dramatic irony for viewers who come to love stuff like that; HOWEVER, the characters and actors almost split from each other so that there is some major "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" stuff going on as the actors PUSH their characters into that dramatic irony, and as such the show becomes very self-aware. Therefore, you get the "it's funner when you laugh WITH people" effect as it seems you and everyone involved with the making of the episodes have a hand in the humor together.
NOW, the part that's really pretty clever (in terms of "hooking the masses") is that they use that appeal (snarky appeal) and then almost get excused when they feign actual attempts at drama (i.e., the counselor/glee teacher romance angle) because they can always come back with more irony to smooth things over.
I'm not claiming to be a massive fan or anything--because I'm not--but I do understand it's appeal, and that's my attempt and answering some of your questions while I'm here multi-tasking with other stuff.
EDIT: So, in essence, I totally disagree with it being assessed as Kidz Bop or High School Musical: the TV show. People who see as that clearly aren't watching the show. It's actually REALLY dark at times, especially if you pay attention the props and scenery (such as signs or inscriptions on awards/trophies that often appear in the background). There is a HUGE fan base with teeny boppers and people who love High School Musical type stuff, but you also must consider that demographic: THEY'RE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL FANS--all they need is the appearance of bubbly crap with singing and dancing and they're going to love it. They'll NEVER get the ironies, but they don't have to. Think about it. They win a several types of personalities (thinkers and non-thinkers alike) and I'd have to say that's pretty clever, in my opinion.
Also, as for the Rocky Horror episode. I think that's more of a reward for audience members who have been engaged in the show for a while. Rocky Horror is the quintessential stupid campy movie. It's god awful, people, we all know this. Well, the high-profile status of Glee now takes that "god awful campyness" to the next logical step in a Halloween episode and that's to do a Rocky Horror homage. It's not designed to appeal to Rocky fans and lure them in. It's actually the other way around. Glee connects their fan base to the campy of all campies, and of course, can make a buck off of it in the meantime, thus once again solidifying their status in that self-aware ironic sense.

I wonder how many people have panned Glee and then go on about the virtues of Family Guy, South Park and American Dad?
Those shows are trying to be relevant and clever and failing, Glee is just what it is, largely a TV show with not much in the way of pretension.

It's pretty much American Idol. What I really love, is backhanded references to the Glee Club in other shows about High School and College, which you know are directed to it, because, well, who has used the word "Glee" club too much.
Burger King Kids Club, good call. Only Community can get away with that kind of casting.

I just have an abrasive sarcastic nature. Don't mean to offend. My main problem with Glee mainly comes from the die hard nature..I hate fanatical support of any type. And Glee fans are practically a cult of prancing muscial numbers devoted to random musicians. But a few of the numbers are catchy, I'll give them that.

It's something I feel like I SHOULD like, because I'm a huge musical fan, but I just can't get into it. Also, I f***ing hate Jane Lynch. I don't understand what is supposed to be appealing about her.

You knoiw, I had nothing against this show. Sure, I've never liked it, but it was completely harmless.
But now everytime I try to watch any video from blip.tv, I get the same stupid Glee add over and over again.
It has caused me to hate Glee with all my heart.

The one time I watched Glee the most impressing aspect was how racy it is for a show watched heavily by elementary and middle school children. Looking into it seemed that the one I saw, with "Push It", was exceptionally racy, but still.

I absolutely adore it, it's one of my favourite things on tv. It's very witty and postmodern, rather than being like HSM and its ilk, it really undermines that style of media. Ditto the Burger King club thing, that's very self consciously done, hence lines like "Mercedes is black, I'm gay - we *make* culture". But it doesn't do this in a totally cynical way. While it's funny and often satirical and doesn't take itself or its characters at all seriously, it can be very heartwarming. It shows that life isn't all high school musical style saccharine (president of the celibacy club getting pregnant for example), but it's still engaging enough that you do rather want things to turn out like they do in musicals!
Also, it's funny and has some great tunes, and arranges even the not so great original songs into something I'll really enjoy listening to.
To the OP, the Rocky Horror episode was a terrible terrible one to start with. It was really pretty contrived to shoehorn in the songs. Preggers, Dream On, Grilled Cheesus or even the pilot are good ones to give more of an idea of what the show is about.

Not something I'd even remotely care to watch. Most of the people I know who like it were in the high school drama club, so naturally they'd be attached to something so insipid and takes them back to when they were in school.

As a 100% heterosexual male whos 6'2 295lbs training pro wrestler I can say with all honesty that I love Glee. I dont know why but I do. Its the darkness of the storylines I think.
