So after months of hearing about the Slender Man all over the place, seeing that well known picture of him in a playground and all that jazz, I finally decided, today, to seek more in-depth info on this creepypasta/ARG and man... this thing creeps the HELL out of me, and I've only been watching the Marble Hornets videos so far, which is only a tiny part of the story.
And MAN, how big is this story? I can't believe the sheer number of blogs, YouTube accounts, Twitters, etc dedicated to the Slender Man (a.k.a. the Operator), not to mention many of them seem to be generally accepted as canon material.
Crap, this all started just a little over a year ago with a single SA thread for photoshopped paranormal pictures, and it already has an universe so extended it would make Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who drool with envy (TV shows can drool, right?). This thing's almost as crazy in real life than it is in universe.
Those Marble Hornet videos are great and for the most part, genuinely creepy. You know, I remember how Paranormal Activity 2 was nothing, and I mean NOTHING but jump scares yet these guys, with a similar concept and means obviously even lower than this movie, manage to pull off a legitimately creepy tale (and it doesn't resort to freaking jump scares, God I hate those). Hollywood really needs to watch and learn.
Anyway, any suggestions on what I could do this night? Because sleeping won't be something I'll be able to do.

If you like how big the mythos to Slender Man is, you should read all the things to The Dionaea House. If you haven't yet.

Totally agree about The Dionaea House. Great stuff - sorta reminded me of House of Leaves in some ways.
Personally, I think that Marble Hornets is the only Slenderman Mythos story that is actually worthwhile. EverymanHYBRID started out good, but it's kinda getting rocky now. TribeTwelve is basically just Marble Hornets on training wheels. Most of the blogs are rather predictable.

You know, if you put together all the sightings of Slender Man in the first batch of Marble Hornets videos (and the Masked figure, as well), you start to see a clear message take shape.
Truly chilling.

If you like how big the mythos to Slender Man is, you should read all the things to The Dionaea House. If you haven't yet. Read the link you sent me and one of the sequels (the livejournal thing). Pretty good stuff, yeah, but I think they're being a bit TOO subtle here. In both cases, the story just starts with a "heh, this is kinda weird" feel and all the sudden it's "OH GOD HELP THIS IS SO WRONG!" I understand that not knowing the source of the dangers can actually make it feel more threatening, but I wish they gave us a little more than going from "relatively normal" to "apes*** crazy". So in short: it's good, but lacking. That's why I like Marble Hornets. It gives us just enough to keep us constantly curious and spooked. You're always telling yourself "I should stop watching this now it's too creepy" and yet you keep watching. I also like the pacing of those vids. Whenever you think things are going stale and the interesting stuff is gone BANG! It reveals something new. It also keeps you guessing. You're always wondering who (or what) the Operator and the masked man are and what it is they want. You keep coming up with new theories. For instance, I have a theory that taking or recording a picture of the Operator's face (his real face, not the blank we usually see) can kill him, which is why he seems to avoid cameras, at least during daytime (it's too dark to get a decent picture at night) and why Alex keeps his camera running at all times (both to be ready when he's got an opportunity and to keep the Operator away).

Did Marble Hornets make this guy up or was it already an urban legend that they picked up on?

Yeah, a thread on Something Awful started the whole thing.

Did Marble Hornets make this guy up or was it already an urban legend that they picked up on? The very first appearence of the Slender Man was in a SomethingAwful photoshop thread whose theme was "paranormal pictures". Someone posted two pictures of a tall, lean man standing in the background of otherwise mundane scenes, accompanied with a short backstory revealing that he was present just before tragic events. The other members immediately loved the character and started creating their own Slender Man pictures while adding elements to his story. Soon enough, some sort of "canon" regarding the Slender Man started emerging as aspects of his backstory, looks and personality became generally accepted. Later, a few amateur filmmakers decided to continue the story by making a series of short videos about the Slender Man called Marble Hornets. Members of SA and random YouTubers alike loved it, and it pretty much became the first canon story regarding the Slender Man (now re-christened the Operator, though most people still use his original name). Other people started their own stories, either using videos as well or writing in blogs, some of them becoming very popular to the point that those are also accepted by the fans as canon, such as everymanHYBRID. If you like psychological horror, you should definitely check those out. It has a Ringu/[REC.] feel to it, with a touch of Silent Hill (going to deserted places to find clues about the strange events, finding weird items, a weird humanoid monster following the characters around, etc...).

Another source of fun in the Slender Man world is when people make awful attempts at writing a blog story about him or make terrible videos on YouTube. There's a few legitimately good ones out there (Marble Hornets is king, TribeTwelve has steadily gotten better over time, and a few lesser known ones are well done...EverymanHybrid is interesting if you're into the whole ARG thing), but a huge number of them are just ridiculous. Some are just cliche, sadly; those aren't fun at all, not even for a "so bad it's good" factor.
Also, Splendorman.

Until now I have never heard of the slender man. Have I been under a rock? Well, he has the power to erase people's memory, so the most likely scenario is that he abducted you, did horrible things to you and then erased all memory of him, even from before you actually encountered him. Now that I reminded you of him, he'll probably have to do it again. Sorry.

Now that I'm in the know, I wish I wasn't because I probably won't be sleeping for the next few weeks. Thank guys!

To tell the truth, I don't think I've ever been honest-to-gosh scared by a "Creepypasta"-type story. Most of them are just goofy to me.
I'll give Slender Man this- it's one of the more creative ones.

I too never heard of The Slender Man until this thread. I looked into the stories and all of the Entry videos, and that's some really creative and creepy stuff. Entry 14 creeped me the f*** out most, holy crap.
Slender Man, to me, is like a mixture of Jack Skellington and Candlejack, with a dash of nightmare fuel.

That's a pretty accurate way to describe him (though Slender Man has yet to be shown actually doing anything threatening, and somehow that makes him even creepier).

Well yeah, but in the end, Till is just just a German rock singer and former Olympic diver. He's not some nightmare beast that wants to hunt people down and remove their organs. As for my response to hearing about the above mentioned slash ......WTF INTERNET?! WHY IS THE SEVEN F***ING HELLS WOULD YOU EVER WANT TO WRITE/DRAW THAT?! WHY WOULD YOU EVEN THINK THAT?!
